As pilot, I bought my first Rolex GMT master 2 (Coke) in 1998, I wore the watch continuously for 18 years, never being let down! I saw the Batman and fell in love the the blue and black, being more representative of day and night and popped into the AD here in Qatar. I walked out with the Batman and it’s been a daily wearer since, it also lead me down the rabbit hole of watch collecting, where will it stop 😅 thanks for the video….

Breitling Chronomat GMT: 200m, date, gmt, lume pip bezel (bidirectional 3rd time zone or unidirectional diver), chronograph, and you can retrofit the bracelet to have an adjustable clasp. The Sub is heavier…the Tudor in titanium less so. The Sub is comfortable…the Tudor a bit more so. The Sub is a bit trickier to acquire…the Tudor a bit less so. The only downside is the lume on the Tudor’s minute hand is more a concept than a reality…whereas the Sub’s lume is flawless and sun-surface bright for a considerable number or dark hours. From someone who's had both watches (126710BLRO and the 124060) I decided to sell my Submariner only because the GMT Master offers so much more - beautiful iconic bezel, date and GMT function, can be dressed up and down if you have it on the jubilee, bezel can be used to time like the Sub. I'm genuinely shocked you went with the Sub especially with everything you've said against it like how it's the most replicated watch in the world.
@Nmh2el9 ай бұрын
The GMT just doesn’t make sense in a small collection, nor in a single watch collection. It’s way too blingy as a single watch collection, yet it tries to cover way too many areas without excelling in any in a small watch collection. People try to treat the GMT as an industrial tool watch one day, and as a dress watch the other. Even at msrp you could basically get a new 124060 and a SBGW231 at grey, and cover both the need for a tool and dress watch much better.

The Rolex dealer experience has taken the fun out of Rolex ownership for me. I went into an AD to put my name down on “the waitlist”, I popped in 5 months later only to find they hadn’t recorded my interest, they then made sure I was on the list: that was about 2 years ago, so that’s nearly 2.5 years (and counting) waiting to be able to purchase an entry level Oyster Perpetual 36 black. Ash, one thing I haven’t heard mentioned is the cost of upkeep on an automatic watch. I wouldn’t suggest wearing a watch of this caliber in the water unless it is less than 5 years since its last service. With this comes the cost, I just had my submariner serviced at a cost of $1000. Mine was in good condition and they only replaced the main spring and seals along with the teardown and cleaning. If water gets into the movement, the cost for repair can be more than the watch is worth.

I own both as well (41mm Sub and BLNR) and I would actually say the GMT has better tool watch bonafides. An airline literally asked Rolex to develop the watch for their pilots and worked together with them to do so. That's about as tool-y as it gets. I'm also surprised by how few of the GMT I see out in the wild, while I see the Sub all the time. Of course the flip side to that is the GMT is a watch that stands out a lot more and is a lot more noticeable, which might not be ideal. Having said that, I would agree with you that I'd take the Sub if I had to choose one. The glidelock makes it easier to dial in a perfect fit whenever and wherever I am. And I like the fact that it blends in more, makes me less self-conscious about wearing it. It kinda disappears on my wrist. And because they sized it up a bit (esp the bracelet) with the 41mm, it just feels like a tougher and more durable watch.

I still have a nice collection, including a Rolex Explorer 1 and 2 but I tend to wear my Baltic Aquascapthe Bronze or my 1980’s CWC Field watch on a daily basis. I can relax and enjoy them without worrying about someone trying to pinch them. It’s a shame things are like that but I still enjoy my watches.

First-time buyers tend to go for a Sub, as common people all know about it, while collectors always will vote for a Pepsi.

I don't own a Rolex, only ever held one in my hands for a few seconds - delicately like a new born baby, as I have never held anything that expensive in my life. That was a brand new Submariner belonging to my brother in law. I nearly got one about 3 years back, I saved up for a 36mm Explorer for a number of years putting a little aside a month (I prefer to save up, take my time, i dunno it just feels better when you have worked and saved for something, it gives it more value imho) but I bottled it at the last second in favour of 3 other watches (Squale 1521 50 Atmos, Omega Speedmaster 39mm automatic version, Cartier Tank ) My thinking at the time was that I wanted a Casual, Smart Casual and a Formal watch, but not a day has gone by that I wished I just got the Explorer now, maybe later on. Picking out of these two? I prefer the Submariner. It's one of the most iconic watches ever made imho.

I would go 100% for the GMT2.

Couldn’t edit my post, I wanted to add that I have a 14060 non date Sub.

Greetings from Washington D.C!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸Great video as always! Chad. It’s tough to choose between those two great timepieces. It’s like asking who’s your favorite child? lol I agree that I would choose Sub as well. I do have a Sub Starbucks (Green lover).

The Sub has that James Bond kind of vibe…I totally agree👍

Both great. Although the sub is like the bmw 3 series of watches. Really common everyone has them but they are good. I do have sub no date but mine a vintage now 24 year old. I have a batgirl and a black ceramic Daytona. I do mix them all up. I admit I do love the fully brushed oyster strap on subs more than any other straps Rolex do

Ash, have you seen the Omega Seamaster Worldtimer? That’s a beautiful piece. Ever thought about putting your Submariner on a rubber Everest strap?

I happen to be picking up my Rolex Sub today. But plan to get a GMT2 as well.

I have both. And a Tudor GMT. Easy button.

But… would you choose a submariner with or without date?
@TheChapsGuide9 ай бұрын
Personally, I don’t like the cyclops bubble, so the no date is for me.

The GMT MII and Daytona are the two Rolex’s I long for but I’ve never felt that way about the Submariner. To me it’s always been the Rolex that my friends and colleagues who know nothing about watches seem to have. For a dive watch I just really prefer the Seamaster.

Recently, you asserted your journey with Rolex was done and there would be big changes with a video to follow. What month is the expected first video release of this much anticipate new direction?

I'm still working on that one, but it will be along soon.

A great dilemma 😊 Nice you’ve got a Pepsi. They’re like rocking horse poo right now and used prices reflect this. I’ve just bought a JC Deepsea. Love it- getting loads of wrist time 😃👍

Back in 2003 I went with the Rolex Submariner 14060m and followed it up with a Rolex Explorer 114270 in 2007. They been faithful companions since. Not really into Rolex modern offerings though

I’m always torn between the two…. IMO Sub is a tool, GMT a tad dressier due to polished centre links and clasp, nightmare for showing scratches…..much better size clasp on the GMT although you loose the handy glide lock🤷🏼♂️

To my mind it's a hard pass on both. I would go for the original Omega Planet Ocean 2500D and spend the change on a couple of nice suits!

Love the Submariner from my pre-teen youth back in the 70s...before most knew of the Rolex today... However, the GMT MASTER II is far more useful for me than the deeper diver sub... If only Rolex would lessen the shiny glam of the GMT.. Mno polished centre links, concealed oyster clasp but less 'tinny' more volume.. We good!

40mm is the best sub to get hands down.... 41 is really to big for this watch. GMT master 2 Pepsi is the best watch to get on grey market right now hands down. As to be honest they have already been discontinued. These 2 rolex are the only 2 watch anyone needs to have in their collection don't waste money buying watches yr AD is tempting you. You only can sell them at a lost as these 2 watches are the only ones going up on the watch index. End of! Also dont wear either of these in London especially the pepsi!

Wonderful video, Ash! Beautiful watches but both well beyond my means. On the other hand, I love your navy pea coat and would love to know your recommendation for finding a proper pea coat. There are so many out there that are sub-par (and I've had some of them). I'd certainly be willing to pay a bit extra for a properly made version of this coat. Cheers!

Ted Baker pea coat...any model before the one they released last winter. Avoid the Billy Reid bond pea coat....it's terrible quality.

Mine is a US Navy surplus pea coat. £25 on eBay.

@@TheChapsGuide Seriously?! That's a terrific deal, certainly. The best ones I've had have all been navy surplus. The only 'fashion' brand I've had that was any good was an old Ralph Lauren, which cost about 10x the price of a fine surplus one. Cheers! 🙂

The new Submariner being 41/21mm kind of changes the dynamic a bit IMO. Also availiable without cyclops is a big bonus. I will feel sick when the Batman catches up to these dimensions 😭

Rolex GMT is the watch to get after you've got the Sub.! Both are great watches.
@jonathansmith2839 ай бұрын
good day sir- I am lucky enough to have : a sub date & a 'batgirl' . I like the gmt batgirl , but the sub date is the daily wear rolex for myself - both from an AD ( two separate AD's ). be safe . ~. JDS/CT.
@b_altmann9 ай бұрын
Yes I was interested in the Sub for a while, but then I found it would attract too much attention and I would not wear it. So it needs to be something else. It’s a shame that the vintage ones (which are more subtle) are more expensive than the new models.
