Roll and Replace (Slot Ball Screen) Continuity Offense
Overview
Explanation of the roll and replace continuity offense, focusing on creating triple and double gaps with slot ball screens, forcing the defense to make tough decisions.
Gap Definition:
Single Gaps: Defined as two offensive players one pass away or in consecutive perimeter spots.
Double Gaps: Two offensive players two passes away, with an open perimeter spot between them.
Triple Gaps: Two offensive players three passes away, with two open perimeter spots between them.
Option 1: Score
Initial Setup: Offense starts with a slot ball screen towards the sideline.
Ball Handler Action: Engage defender, use the screen, and aim to score if not stopped.
Drive and Kick
Process: Ball handler engages the defender, uses the screen, and pressures defender 2 in the corner.
Decision Point: If defender 2 stops the ball, pass to the corner for a shot, triggered by seeing the defender's chest.
Pass to the Roller
Roll and Replace Action: Player on the block moves to the same side as the ball screen.
Execution: If the ball handler is stopped, pass to the rolling player 4, exploiting the defender's decision to stay or switch.
Pass to the Replace
Situation: Occurs when defenders stop the ball, leaving player 4 open.
Execution: Pass to player 5 if the defender stops the roller, leaving player 5 open.
Corner - Continuity
Process: After passing to the corner, player 2 dribbles to the high wing/slot, using a ball screen from player 5.
Rotation: Player 4 moves to the same side as the screen to replace when player 5 rolls.
Corner - Drive Baseline
Action: Corner player drives baseline, with the ball handler moving to the corner.
Support: Block player ducks in to make themselves available for a pass.
Corner Middle Drives
Action: Corner player drives towards the middle.
Support: Ball handler moves to the baseline corner, and block player ducks in to block their defender.
Duck In Definition: Duck-in is a post move where an offensive player uses their inside foot to seal their defender and move into the paint. It's an effective way to create space and scoring opportunities near the rim
Pass to the Replace - Continuity
Execution: If no advantage, pass to the slot/wing or perform a dribble handoff to continue the offense.
Rejecting the Ball Screen
Action: If the ball handler rejects the screen, they attack the basket or pass to the corner/short corner.
Continuity: Continuity maintained by having the ball screener stay up top.
How to Get Back into Spots
Adjustment: Ensure one player in each corner, one at the basket, and two up top to reset positions.
Special Situations
Short Roll - Trap and Hedge: Ball handler quickly passes to a short roller to create space and decision pressure.
Pop - Traps and Hedge: Screener pops to the three-point line for a shot or drive.
Passing to the Screener
Alternative: Skip the screen and pass for a handoff to avoid traps or hedges.
Switching - Change Positions
Exploitation: Use roll and replace with guards to create mismatches against defenders.
Switching - Ghosting Ball Screens
Technique: Fake screen before popping, confusing defenders and creating open shots.
Slips
Action: Player sets a screen but quickly cuts to confuse the defense and create scoring opportunities.
Back Doors
Execution: When defenders overplay, the offensive player cuts backdoor towards the basket.
Flat Ball screens
Setup: High and flat screens to give the ball handler options and create space.
Execution: Roller and replacement move to the same side as the screen, similar to slot ball screens.
