When my dad was in his 70's and 80's back in 1970 and 1980, he made rolled paper picture frames. He made a huge doll house which I still have. Also made a couple of log cabins, a ferris wheel and other things of interest. We had never seen any crafts like this before. He also made his own "tools" to roll the paper up.

you are saving the caps because, you can use soda can tabs and paper or cloth to color them for other art projects similar to the bottle cap basket you have. you can also try drawing a picture on them and heating them in your oven like the plastic togo box art thingies. So many wonderful uses for your plastic caps.

I'm now in my 60's but when I was in the second grade, we cut and rolled newspaper comics around small dowels, which the teacher then dipped in clear gloss. After gloss dried, we strung "beads" to make necklaces. I had mine until 3 years when I cut beads off of string and used them to make my best friend eyeglass holder to wear around her neck. She still uses it.

Hi Shannon Green - Thank you for the instructions for rolled paper for projects. I am certain you will come up with useful project, of course, when you do, please remember to share. It really is crafty to recycle products that accumulate - often times we're asked to recylcle something until the need is met, but when that happens some crafty person uses brilliance and creates useful uses, such as what you have done. Once again, I am glad I happened upon your "KZbin."

Shannon, you could use the bottle caps for jewelry. put a tiny hole in one side add chains on either sides string up a few add small decals or stickers to decorate. Otherwise you could make a ring of wire then hang strings of water bottle-caps end to end they make lovely lampshades or door partitions. glued a tiny picture of my husband inside one and me in the other put a tiny hinge between the two then strung a key ring on it, Really cool.

Hi Shannon! Loved this video. You are so relatable. Watching this made me want to be your friend. Silly huh? About 2 years ago - probably the same time you were discovering and exploring this craft - I was doing the same thing. Everything you said in this video was the same advice I would give. Although I love working with newspaper to get the longest strips. I like to paint the rolled tubes then weave them into baskets. Using different colored tubes to create a pattern. I made a paint tray from heavy duty foil and used acrylic paint thinned with a little water. I watched the same lady you watched but I also watched a lady who is in Russia - (I think). I also use the wooden skewer like you use . But for thinner tubes that I weave in their round unflattened state - I use a piece cut from a wire clothes hanger. Found you through Kelly Murton demo on the mod podge napkin tip. I subscribed. Thank you! By the way...your hubby (?) sounds like mine. Cute!

Shannon, I have been making paper tub stuff for some time but, lately I have been making bracelets. I wanted a paper that didn't make such a heavy tube and experimented with tissue paper. I did cut the paper into rectangles but, I roll mine around a narrow brass tube. This makes for a wider tube than a skewer makes. Also I do flatted my tubes for this project, I iron them. Works like a charm. If you like the weight of newspaper for your tubes, they do sell a large package of newsprint at Target for $10.00. I've hade mine for several years and still haven't used it up yet.

Those bottle caps look so enticing... I think I would paint/decorate them with favorite colors and find a way to glue them all (or melt) together into a table top, using plywood (?) as a base, and when complete, use a glass top over it so you can actually use it daily.

Love your tutorial. Could you flatten tubes with a rolling pin?
@ShannonGreen10 жыл бұрын
Absolutely!

Hi Shannon, I liked your tutorial and your personality. My first thought for flattening the paper is a rolling pin, which will flatten many papers at a time. I'm trying to get into making projects with paper from books and mags, I kind of got turned off because the paper got stuck to the skewers, and flattening became time consuming. I will try again soon. You are also correct about the paper size, I think the smaller the sheet , the better. Great job!

Nadine Briggs I like to run mine through my die cut machine as if I was going to emboss but with no embossing folder I get ten sheets through per time nice flat crisp edges

Heck I could probably shingle my own house with the big box of them out in my garage!

You are so funny. I just watched your video for the same reason you're keeping bottle tops and really loved it. I've never seen anything like it before. I did once try making paper beads but gave up after about 15 minutes and returned the book. Your baskets are beautiful and should sell for a lot. As crafters/artists we need to really learn to value our time and the quality of our work. I can't wait to see the next video.

I love your basket. I love the idea of paper rolls. I can hardly wait to try it. I have an idea for the plastic water tops. Drill holes in the center, put a screw through it. Then take the paper tubes and coil them like you do the bottoms of the bowls. Put glue in the bottom, over the screw head. Set the coiled paper inside the cap, and voila, you have a drawer pull. I'll try it, I know it will work. I've made drawer pulls out of the paper beads. I just glued them to small drawers. They work fine.

Now there's an idea I haven't thought of before, I love it! Thank you!!

I'd use a thicker skewer/dowel to roll the paper to make a bowl. Since you flatten the tubes they would be wider thus easier and quicker to make a bowl.

I see you painting the insides with colored watered down glue and drilling little holeds in the sides top and bottom and stringing together to make a beaded curtain. Hang in a window or on the porch, or a doorway. The sound they make sounds just like a beaded curtain. The colors might catch the sun like sun catchers.

I have a ton of paper beads that I will probably never use, the reason you may ask... It is so relaxing to wind the beads while I am watching tv. Anyway, I dropped in to see if you had surpassed the 1,000,000 make yet and sure enough! You crack me up and I love watching you. Now off to watch some of your more recent videos!

I also have a big box of water bottle caps that I don't know why I keep but like you....I'm sure that someday they will be very useful !!!!!!!!!!! They make great hats for one thing. If you make small stuff like Barbie furniture and stuff you will find a use for them.....! Small doll accessories make for one great way to use them .. :) Thank you ! I enjoyed your video very much. Happy crafting !!!!!!!!!!

This video is a conversation, not a tutorial, so don't expect it to provide DIY info and process photos. Don't blame the artist just because you are watching the wrong video. The fault is yours.

Loved this video and am going to try this....as for the bottle caps ? I save them for my Grandaughter as her school saves them and they go to a recycling facility that converts them into outside benches for there school playground. They are weather resistant and because we live in Florida, they do not get real hot to sit on.

I'm sorry but using a book to do this is a waste and just shows how ignorant people are nowadays. If you can't read or don't care, ship them off to where they appreciated.

Tiago Nascimento And where would that be? In the U.S. it is not unusual for students to pay $200 or more for a single college textbook. It's a big business and because of that textbook manufacturers make sure to publish new editions very regularly so that older ones cannot be reused. The books I used were rejected by organizations that collect and redistribute usable college textbooks. That means I can repurpose them myself or donate them to a thrift store or junk shop where someone will buy them and repurpose them. Or I can toss them in the recycle bin. I am unaware of other countries that are in need of outdated American college textbooks. Enlighten me.

I recycle lots of books. I saw the Cancer Thrift store throwing reference books in the dumpster, they can't sell them. This ole 70 year old fished them out. I make flowers out of the paperback book pages, the library book sale offer all kinds of books for a couple dollars a bag. Most third world countries have better internet than we do, and shipping cost just too much.
@glendapaul80409 жыл бұрын
Shannon Green I agree, with you and Penny Swaney, it is a good thing to recyle magazines and books that are just going to end up in the rubbish, especially with electronic things that you can read a book off these days. Old books have many many uses. :)

still waiting on this Tiago to enlighten us all...I imagine it won't happen. gotta love negative remarks without backup or proof. Anyway..thanks so much Shannon..great tut!!! :)
@glendapaul80409 жыл бұрын
I disagree. there are some books that are just not worth saving, so making them into a journal that does have words you can read can not be a waste. people often use blank books as well. I think they are great.

Most excellent! I now have something to do with my newspaper after reading them rather then recycle them for the trash, I'll turn them into art! Thanks a bunch for the video!
