This short film from the 1970s looks at the essentials of roller-skate safety. It starts with a short history of the sport as well as different shots of the injuries that can be gotten while roller-skating. This is followed by the important equipment and a demonstration of how to check your roller-skates by Billy Burke of Los Angeles City College. This is followed by Burke giving a lesson to a group of amateur roller-skaters. Finally, the film covers some important rules such as avoiding pedestrians and following traffic laws.

The lingering 70s disco influence is strong in this film. For those who lived in Southern California during this time, was it really as adventurous and carefree as TV depicted it? We east-coasters want ro know.

It was exactly like that, a wonderful place. Yet soon after 1981 disco and quad skating and even skateboarding fell right off the map. Inline rollerblading became relatively popular. And skateboarding had a bigger resurgence in the 90s. Sadly that area is rife with blight and homelessness today
