As a kid I understood Jonathan was the only who knew the Tokyo team was hella dangerous. Moonpie didn’t which cost him his life. 😮

I suspect Moonpie actually did know the Tokyo team was dangerous. But like many men, especially jocks, Moonpie hid his fear under hubris. His constant demeaning of Tokyo players being little men was actually Moonpie's psychological means of dealing with his own inner fears. Tokyo was No. 2 in the rankings which means they were indeed a dangerous team. Houston played with power. Tokyo played with speed. More often than not, speed wins over power. Buuuut, and there's a big but. Power can and does beat speed when played with precision, discipline, skill, and leadership. The faster team gets ground down by power, losing men to injuries and other. The power team can literally overpower a faster team in the end which is what Houston did. To be sure they couldn't have won without Jonathan E.'s leadership, inspiration, and personal powerful athletic prowess. Moonpie, Jonathan E.'s sidekick, was an invaluable contributor until the Tokyo team took the risk of taking out Moonpie. It was a calculated risk that Tokyo paid for when Jonathan E. took revenge but in the end Tokyo still lost.

Should have started clip with corporate anthem. Set the tone for whole scene as the players realized what was coming.

KZbin realtime listening to Metokur's livestream about Rekeita on my phone is what brought me here. Nick mentioned this scene in his ramble that Metokur is restreaming.

High octane movie. It drags badly in between the games sequences which are spectacular. One of the first movie to include all the stunt performers in the closing credits who get extra kudos because despite the brutality portrayed in the movie, there were no serious injuries during filming.

Apparently the cast and crew used to play it between shots during filming, and found it surprisingly playable. I guess they were helped by the fact that the rules are described in great detail, down to the weight of the ball, the number of substitutions permitted, and the diameter of the playing arena.

There are actual rules to this game - which explicitly state that you can not attack a motorcyclist A motorcyclist's job is simply to provide momentum for their teammates. So when Moonpie attacks the Japanese motorcyclist, he's in serious trouble ...
