Very encouraging to see someone who is a beginner like me, facing similar challenges. The first time I skated was for about 5 minutes in my kitchen. I felt fairly confident. I was wobbly but I could get the movement for a few seconds at a time. As I was stopping for the last time, one of my feet kept going forward and I fell backward and onto my arm/wrist. I knocked the wind out of myself and my hand went numb. I felt sick to my stomach and needed help getting my boots off. I’d never broken/sprained/fractured anything, so I didn’t know what that would feel like. Luckily, I still don’t. However, I was unable to use my hand normally for about 3 weeks. I’ve tried skating twice since, outside both times. I can’t even stand up in my skates without help. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. It’s frustrating, but I’m so determined to learn. When I was researching on KZbin and trying to find beginners, I saw so many people just “get it” right away. I felt you voice a lot of the same concerns in this video and that is comforting to know I’m not alone.

It’s really lovely to also hear from someone who is beginning their skating journey, I also found myself watching vlogs of people who just put on skates and where full of confidence. Every time I put them on I feel as nervous as I was on the first day, hopefully in time we will both see big improvements ☺️ thanks for watching!

This has made me feel so much better about my progress (very slow progress at that). Every beginner skate video i've seen recently has shown people with super quick progress and they're barely afraid. This video and all the other lovely comments have made me feel so much more normal Haha! I am terrified of falling and Ive never done anything like skating before so i am a proper BEGINNER. Seeing people similar to me and knowing i can still eventually skate is really encouraging! Thanks for making this video! :D

Have you tried loosening your trucks? It made a big difference for me. Also check your wheels (not too tight or loose). Softer wheels (Radar Energy or Atom Pulse are good) with good bearings will help outdoors. Also, you should be sitting a LOT lower, bend those knees and keep looking forward 👍 There are a lot of misleading unboxing ‘beginner’ videos, where they’re skating in the street or jumping around. It’s just not the case for most people. It is very nerve wracking skating outdoors at first. Please don’t compare your progress with those misleading videos 😊
@danielledean7934 жыл бұрын
Yes I recently sat down and had a play with my trucks and realised that both them and my wheels were too tight so hopefully now moving around will be a lot easier and smoother! Also going to look at better/softer wheels as I’m really struggling to find a smooth outdoor area to practice! Thanks for the advice 😊

I got skates recently and on the first day I fell backwards really fast and hit the middle of my back on this step while winding myself. Since then I've been so nervous about trying again on my own outside but I don't want to give up right at the start. This might sound weird but seeing your video has made me feel a lot better because it's nice to see that it's not just me that's fearful of falling over and feels like they need a hand at first, so thank you for making me feel more normal. I skated outside while clinging to my mum today and I think I did improve even while holding onto her.

Dear lord, do I LOVE your apartment. Edit; Also please don’t forget your helmet! I’m a beginner too, but I saw a video of a very experienced skater falling in her house and hitting her head on a coffee table-it was terrifying. I’ve also had a pretty bad fall which would have given me a concussion without me helmet. Your pink one is so cute, too!

I was so "happy" to hear someone express their huge fear of falling, not in a sadistic way but because, at least I'm not the only one.... But then I saw you^^ You're performing so much better than me!! I litteraly freeze. But I held on and tried and tried and tried. And it just feels like it's going worse each time :'(

I felt the exact same, the vlog doesn’t show all of my off screen feelings, but I had days where I went out but then was too scared to actually skate so went back home. I’ve taken a break over winter as there’s no rinks open and outdoor skating isn’t possible so I will be even more scared going back to it in Spring 🙈
@oonadoodles3 жыл бұрын
I felt the same way. After falling a few times though, it’s kinda like your worst fear is just not as bad as you thought so you panic less after them. If you feel like you’re gonna fall, just bend your knees!

Great to see a fellow Brit skating :) Nearly 30? im 43 and cant skate enough, i hope you have the bug for life, i was a 90's teen and we all skated back then and i couldn't wait to get my kids into it, i had my youngest skating on full blown proper skates at 2 1/2, she was the star attraction our regular venue he he. As for stopping GET A BACKSTOP!!!! you wont ever look back when you discover the shear stopping power of one, you can put all your weight into it without the risk of falling forward. The skate guards at my local hate me during games like tag as dart to the side then stand on the backstop with so much weight that one skate is off the floor and the two back wheels on my other skate are barely touching the ground and im almost balancing on just the stop and the skate guards fly past me, they just cant compete with how fast i can stop lol My worst fall was during a speed skate at my local venue, I wan giving it absolutely everything I had and lost grip and ended up landing directly on my bum then slammed into the wall, I was unable to skate again for days and could hardly walk ether!

Thank you for posting this! I’ve watched so many beginner videos where they just take off after the first day and look like total naturals. I’m finding it difficult to find my balance and thought I was the only slow learner. @@danielledean793 yes radar energy wheels!! i have them in both 62 mm and 57 mm. they are worth it if you're skating in gravel all the time. hybrid wheels will do fine if you're in a tennis court. also my bolt on toe stops are really too big/annoying i notice. i am building the skates that i really want soon with a riedell suede boot and i'll be able to get adjustable toe stops.

i have the same skates and am also a beginner :) those toe stops are terrible in general and especially when new because they just bounce and get caught on the ground. once they get roughed up stopping with them gets a little easier BUT for me the easiest way to stop is the plow stop! which you're already almost doing since you can do bubbles :)
@danielledean7934 жыл бұрын

I remember as a kid I dropped twice backwards really hard on my skates and hurt myself. I developed a fear of skating after that. Then I saw someone with a hoody tied around there waists and realised people used them to cushion them falling back. There was also this young guy who taught me how to stop using a toe stop. I recently bought skates again but My area only has rough surfaces and I get alittle embarrassed skating around other people as an adult.
@danielledean7934 жыл бұрын
The hoody is a great idea I’ll have to try that! I know what you meant I really struggled to find anywhere suitable for skating outdoors as well, I see lots of videos from the US with outdoor hockey rinks and I wish we had stuff like that around here!

Padded shorts. Wear helmet inside because if you fall you don’t want to bump head on furniture. You’re expecting too much from yourself. Be patient, first get balance, then more strength and balance will make it easier to stop. You seem to be doing FINE!

I’ve only stood in the boot to see if it fit and immediately was nearly having it fly off from under me 🥲 I just want to learn how to glide so I can skate around my park I don’t want to do anything my most ambitious thing is maybe to skate backwards. I hope you stuck to it but seeing many of my worries also voiced helps.

Idk if it's a tip but I listen to music and focus on that when learning something on wheels you're 100% gonna fall but that isnt something to be embarrassed about. I do recommend good wrist guards that help prevent your wrists from bending backwards too far if you go to catch yourself. Also watch some videos on how to fall and if you're feeling unstable try squatting lower it helps you gain balance.
