It's hard to believe, but just two decades ago, regional flying was much more widespread in the U.S. than it is now. Regional airports would see so much more services but fast forward to today and all but a handful of those services remain. Regardless, I've always enjoyed regional flights given I grew up around these. Today, I'm flying on my third intra-Illinois route, Chicago to Peoria with American Eagle. Due to the weather, this flight was continuously getting delayed but nothing terrible. At least we weren't on the earlier flight...

As a Ramp Agent from Envoy at ORD, I think it's so cool to see the passenger's POV of this flight. CRJ 200s are by far my favorite to load up because I can actually stand inside the cargo bin.

Worked out of Peoria for 40 years. Got to the point where it was more reliable to rent a car and drive 2.5 hours then fly. Used to fly through St. Louis then American bought TWA and then canceled all the flights to and from STL.

About 15 years ago, I used to fly this route a lot, as I was dating my now wife, who lived outside DC. Because parking fees are a thing at O'Hare, this was a cheaper option. Always liked the Peoria airport.

@@ASAviation my dad went to FSU, and we had property in NC, short drive from ATL. We used to fly them nonstop to watch that rivalry game vs Clemson in Death Valley. For my birthday one of the times, he got upgraded to first class, and gave it to me. I was only about 12, 24 now with CFI certificates, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Helped spark my passion for aviation, true professionals those AirTran employees were. Miss them, miss IL.

As someone who has had a recent interest in regional flights, this video showed up in my recommendations. I appreciate you documenting the entire experience, primarily the time & cost factors. What's wild is on the day you did this flight: you would have been better off getting in a car and driving to Peoria. That would have gotten you there much faster and cheaper!
@ASAviation
@ASAviation 17 күн бұрын
Thanks a lot, yeah regional flying is boring to most but I like the connectivity aspect of it. And yeah if I was only flying between ORD-PIA it would've been faster to drive on that day.

American has three wholly owned regional airline subsidiaries, Air Wisconsin is not one of them. The three wholly owned subsidiaries are Piedmont, PSA, and Envoy. In addition to these three, American outsources regional flying to 3rd party regional airlines SkyWest, Republic, and Air Wisconsin. Mesa formerly had a contract with American, however this contract was terminated sometime in 2022, and ZW was brought on in place of Mesa. Speaking of subsidiaries, PSA actually has a maintenance base at PIA and operates flights to the airport from Charlotte, American's 2nd busiest hub. 9:59, that -900 from Charlotte you mentioned is a PSA flight.

Thank you for sharing your trip here. You had a long day at O'Hare International Airport but did you use your point membership to go to the Admiral Club to relax and have something to eat?😊 The regional Peoria Airport looks cute but I hope the ramp staff will be able to handle more flights because people are traveling more nowadays.😊

Flights are assigned to runways according to WEATHER CONDITIONS; not by the city of destination.
@dasmellyyooper
@dasmellyyooper 20 күн бұрын
All of Chicago's runways are the same orientation (Except for 22L/R). Chicago likes to split north and south departures (and arrivals too) to the north and south sides so there is minimal traffic interference. Doesn't always happen, like here, but that's the general traffic plan.
@ASAviation
@ASAviation 20 күн бұрын
@@tonyde52 yes of course. But departure runways are also assigned based on the flight’s general direction. At ORD southbound flights always use the southern runways (barring weather) so that it doesn’t impede traffic flow. Wind is of course the main factor behind how the runways operate. But when it comes to departures the destination and direction of where the flight is going determines what side of the airport the flight departs from.

Air wisconsin is absolutely horrible. They don't take care of their planes and they wait until they break to fix them. They are delayed more than they are on time. I work the ramp for AA at a station that gets AWI regularly, and it is frightening to see how poorly their planes are maintained.
