@@RoysRocks isn't there a way to cast the base in some resin or something that would make it stronger and not crack? It's a real shame to lose such a pretty little gem.

If nothing else, it could make a decent wire wrap ring. Wire wrap seems a good choice for uneven shaped stones.
@RoysRocks2 жыл бұрын
True wire wrap can get around most things... If you are good at it. I'd be no chance 🤣

@@RoysRocks practice is the only thing that'll help that. 😆 I have to get better at it myself. I still haven't made any worth posting the videos I've taken. 😆

I would have probably started with the black nova for the shaping. The chips have me a bit weary with the diamond burs. A great little stone. Thanks for the video Roy.
@RoysRocks2 жыл бұрын
The stone didn't chip and rarely does with a 600 sintered. The issue with starting at a Nova is often you'll end up destroying the burr and here they are not cheap.

Gaining experience with this type of problem solving is a benefit that comes with working through $50 parcels, IMHO. I can't spend hundreds of dollars on expensive parcels. However, this doesn't mean that I can't cut nice gems. Just have to work harder/smarter to extract them from gamble-quality rough stones. The fun is in the hunt, IMHO!
@RoysRocks2 жыл бұрын
You are spot on. You can learn a lot and have a lot of fun with the cheaper material.

I've noticed that people come to the same conclusions independently... Sometimes I carve a large back into a shape similar to a dop stick... I'm betting experience standardises what we do
@drfill92102 жыл бұрын
Fyi I suppose it isn't cheating to add some epoxy to the back to stabilise it. Just weigh the stone first?
@RoysRocks2 жыл бұрын
Adding epoxy is alright just becomes a treated stone. I think I'd rather take the full backing away and doublet.
@JonahVex2 жыл бұрын
There's bezel material with thin "prongs" on it kinda like a crown and you fold them down individually might be worth a look if you want the website let me know I can post it below... otherwise I dont want to advertise some random company on your channel lol

Ah yeah thats a really good idea! I have seen those kind of settings but can't think of the name for them... seems to be called crown edge or crown bezel. Genius idea.

Perhaps it could be used in an art type piece. Resin set? Sacrilege, I know, but........... (don't shoot me, please!) Lol.

I'll talk to KG about it but I think to set you'll have to remove the backing and doublet or resin reinforce.
