My version of the rolling log trap that forces rodents to shift their center of gravity to get the bait.

At my local Lowe's as of 4/10/17:
227199 32-gal BH ROUND TRASH CAN $14.98
23814 3/4-IN INX5-FT CVPC PIPE. $3.44
(You can get regular pvc pipe cheaper, I just didn't want to buy a huge piece)
23773 3/4-IN CAP CPVC 94898/47. $0.68 (x2)
17199 3/8-2 #3 STEEL REBAR PIN $1.55
The only tools I used were a hacksaw for the pvc and a 1/2" drill bit for all the holes for the rebar.
You could certainly use a smaller container, once the rat falls in water, it doesn't really matter how high it could normally jump. I just had another reason why I needed another trash can. But it does fit the rebar perfectly. And of course you'll need some ramps.

Soap prevents fleas from jumping off. Salt in the water preserves rat for easy removal from water

@@milesilano797 Soap breaks the water tension it also makes it slippery to get out of. Not sure about salt as that would help make them float.

milo ilano soap cuts to water tension and yes it does help to put the fleas but that's a side benefit. I'm the salt acts as a type of preservatives so in case the a rat is in the water for a period of time it doesn't get stinky quite as fast.

Excellent mods! I'd NOT use a knurled #3 rebar, though. Given time, rust, use, exposure...it'll likely rust. I reckon :-) A discarded straight galv. rods is easy to find. I'd place some grease at both cap-to-sides junctions, to resist rolling resistants. This 68-yr youngun builds catamarans (ply, glass, epoxy). Time for you to build one, too. Once one has mastery over rats, it's time to prepare for Global Warming's water rise (here in SW FL, anyway :-) Tanx for your bright idea!! subbed

I might do this but I’m burnt out now and I don’t feel like trying to build anything even though this is simple. We also are at the water and have huge Norway rats and my suspicion is they just won’t go near this BUT, it’s cheap enough and they do LOVE peanut butter . They are so cautious of anything new but they did hang on the edge of a bucket and lick the peanut butter off the soda can. I really doubt you could get theM out on the bar. I’m going to try just one bite . It’s a 2nd gen poison.

We have HUGE rats here because we are close to the waterfront and a major shipping port. I wanted something that would last for years (we needed a permanent solution, not just to get rid of the ones that are currently here) and looked as least trashy as a rat trap could :) Even in a 5 gallon bucket, if the water was too low, they could jump out. And if it was too high, they could reach the edge with their forepaws. The rats we catch in the next video are juveniles and not the root of the problem. As far as it being 'too high': The price was essentially the same as anything smaller (unless I used garbage, which I didn't want, because this is long-term) and we have plenty of room and a green house/full height chicken coop that reduce its visibility relatively.
