Rolling Meat in the Weed for Barbel & Chub

When the sun is shining on a mid-summer day there’s always the chance of a BARBEL, and definitely a CHUB, somewhere in amongst the STREAMER WEED. Today I have a go at ROLLING MEAT down the channels in search of the beasties. See the GEAR and METHOD I use and watch the BITES develop. Also, LUNCHEON MEAT v BACON GRILL….

It’s my favourite way of fishing rolling meat, I don’t use lead though I use plasticine

Well that's clever! I presume that this means you can add or reduce weight according to the conditions, flow etc., in different swims? However, I would have some concerns about leaving lumps of plasticine in the river!

Really enjoy your videos, love your style of fishing, good common sense methods, minimal kit and good watercraft. Can I ask what line you are using ? 8lb can vary depending on brand.

Maxima Chameleon mono is my preferred brand, floats well if you give it a coat of dry fly dressing, (wet fly if you want it to sink), and it is stiff enough to "mend" out the bow if it drags a little. Also thin enough to lessen the drag if fishing light ledger across the flow. I'm working on my next project which is all about stalking bigger fish; last weeks footage came out poorly so I will have another go on Friday. The underwater shots missed the pick up of the bait and the Barbel then knocked the camera out with it's tail! Never work with animals they say and they are right :)

I fish this on my centre pin ,bites are just small taps but need striking on

Yes, weird that almost all the bites are very light. It was years before I realised that sometimes just a tremor was a fish :)

Bacon grill!! Wouldnt feed it to my dog. I have it with two fried eggs but do manage to save some for fishing.

I’ve got to try this method when the season opens are the bites easy to detect

It's a good way of targeting fish that are hiding in the weed and I find that the Chub give light pulling bites but the Barbel tend to rattle then run. My biggest problem on this beat is he number of Chub. You may have to 'remove' 30+ before you get the bait to roll down to the Barbel !
