⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Rolling Stock Fleet Swap - Siemens R160 Operating on the E Line

To prepare for CBTC to go live on the Queens Boulevard E/F/M/R lines, the R46s that run on these lines are being moved to Coney Island Yard. In exchange, R160s maintained by Coney Island Shop will be transferred to Jamaica Shop. Here we see a transferred set of R160 cars equipped with Siemens propulsion running in E line service. Expect more interesting changes in the future. Enjoy!

I finally saw an R46 in the N line. I saw it today in Queensboro plaza when the 7 line wasn't going to Manhattan. I just saw a Astroia Bound R46 N. But I took an R160A Q train. Wow Q trains to Queens again.

Not the ding dong sound but the doors when they open and close. I've heard them on the F lines. R46 are getting somewhat common so far on the N and W lines. I was going to Queens and saw an R46 pass by 57 street. I was like dam. Then another pair came. I was like wtf. That 2 R46 sets. Then another one on the Manhattan bound. Very common.

The Cat ln The Hat With The Belt That is not remotely true. There is NO R160B 4-car sets. There are only 372 R160 cars in 4-car sets and they are R160A cars 8313-8652 and 9943-9974. All of them are based solely out of East New York Yard. In addition, both the N and W are based out of Coney Island Yard. The CI Fleet contains 75-door R46 and R68 cars that are linked into 4-car units and 60-foot R160A and B that are linked into 5-car sets. THEY DO NOT HAVE R160B CARS ASSEMBLED IN 4-CAR SETS, AND THE N AND W DO NOT OPERATE IN 9-CAR SETS. No offense, but are you on drugs?

My new favorite yard is Jamaica. It used to be East New York due to my home trains J, Z, L, and M housing the R160A-1, but now a swap has sent all R160 5-car sets to Jamaica. Wherever a line uses R160s, it's only this car! I find it fun watching the R160A-2, R160B-1 (Alstom), and R160B-2 (Siemens) over the E, F, G, and R lines, and even catching more instances of mixed-types, especially propulsion differences, which are more likely to happen now thanks to all R160 5-car sets located there.

I'm comparing the sounds of the different Siemens propulsion systems around the world; I have noticed that even though NYC Subway's R160B trains have Siemens' IGBT propulsion, the pitch sounds more like its GTO brethren than something with IGBT. Compare this with Japan's Keikyu's 1000 series trains with Siemens IGBT propulsion, then compare it with Keikyu's 1000 series trains with Siemens GTO (a.k.a. the famous "singing trains"), and Singapore's SMRT C651 and Taiwan's Taipei Metro C321 trains, both of which are also fitted with Siemens' GTO propulsion.

Yo facts, 6th av express always getting fucked. R160 in general actually be going fast, everytime a reroute on the West End with a R160, it is always so much faster. But of course, CBTC "has" to happen on Queens Blvd. Queens Blvd better not get R211, except for of course the R trains.

Branden Rios that wouldn’t really make any sense to bring the 211s to those lines. For one, they are retiring the remaining 32s, the 44s on the SIR, 46s. Not sure about the 68s/68As, but that’s where they are going to be sending to replace those fleet of old cars. When the 262s come into place for the A Division IRT lines, they will retire all of the remaining R62 trains that are occupied on the 1, 3 and 6 lines

Christopher Okhiria I believe 80 cars will be retired in 2020. The R179 issues have been fixed so no need for a big spare factor.

Christopher Okhiria In all actuality, the shutdown is NOT a shutdown. The plans were changed last year to be a partial shutdown during nights and weekends, with regular rush hour service maintained. Because of this, there is no need for full length G train or additional C service as of now. In addition, C fleet needs only 72 R32s and 72 R179s. The A only needs its 248 R46 and 130 R179s to make service. It doesn’t even need the R32s. There are only 222 R32s left. Taking 80 cars out of service will not impact the fleet in any way until the R211s arrive.
