After all those years and all of the attention, it's clear from this interview that he absolutely HATES the idea of sitting for an interview. His body language, facial expressions, hand tics just scream "Get me out of here!" On the one hand, it's refreshing that he did not enjoy the attention. On the other hand, it's a shame he couldn't understand why people were interested in him and they really did want to know what he did at home or why he drew the hotel beds. I wish I had met him.

One problem is that most interviews are conducted by people who have no idea what they are asking, or anything about the people they interview. Most of the questions are stupid, and are there to provoke not allow the person to be themselves.

Charlie was interviewed some years ago (1991ish) for one of the British music magazines. He'd just released his box set dedicated to Charlie Parker, and apparently right at the start of the interview he said; "Don't like talking about myself, makes me paranoid." The interviewer respected that and so the rest of the interview was about Charlie Parker and the box set.

I was a young Kiwi backpacker lost in London one day in the mid 80's. I walked into an antiques shop to ask for directions. There was only one person in shop looking at something intently. He looked up. It was Charlie. ( I'm a huge Stones fan) Time sort of froze. I just smiled. Charlie smiled. And I walked out again. The moral of the story? Treat your heroes with respect and don't make a fool of yourself. Charlie was an avid collector of antiques. I didn't want to bother him.

I saw Brian Setzer at a guitar store in Santa Monica in ‘92. He looked at me uneasily, probably thinking I wanted an autograph. I left him to continue talking to the store employee. I agree, it’s the best way of respecting our heroes.

Met Charlie Watts for the 1st time in Washington, DC at the Bayou,around 1986. He was so calm and nice. He did not understand why people loved the rolling stones so much. But he always showed respect to their fans. For me to say he was nice IS A HUGE UNDERSTATEMENT! AS MUCH AS I LOVE KEITH RICHARDS, I THINK THE STONES SHOULD HAVE STOPPED; IN A WAY NO CHARLIE WATTS NO ROLLING STONES. MY OPINION....

I saw the Stones in Little Rock, Arkansas in November of 1994. Our seats were eighth row center. Mick was dressed in a purple sequined jacket and there was a slight mist the entire concert. At the very end, Charlie heaved a drum stick into the crowd that came within a few feet of me. If I had been paying better attention that stick would have been mine. To this day I regret that.

Proved Watts was easily replaced. Jagger keeps hammering "Charlie wanted us to go on".....as if Watts didn't had other concerns that his mates should be churning out their old catalogue till the cows came home. It almost seems Jagger is embarrassed to have replaced Watts in an instant so he could keep the old adoring crowd fix coming. When will this lot bow out gracefully ? Too late now....they'll go on till they're stumbling on stage , knowing the crowd will pay top dollar to see 'm fumbling. Just like they did with Elvis. Maybe if they'd let Charlie off the hook letting him pursue his own interests instead of dragging this frail old man to stadiums all over the world, which he hated, he just had an unwavering loyalty to his mates of which they took advantage . Maybe he would've been still around today , enjoying some peace & quiet .

Charlie didn't mention the difference between playing rock and jazz. Rock drummers use the bass drum like a heart beat. The beat is usually centered around the bass drum. In jazz, the drumers don't center the beat around the bass drum like that. They work the high end of the drum kit. And, they use brushes more commonly than in rock. Jazz is a whole different feel, than rock. Rock is usually, harmonically more basic, too. I think that Charlie was being diplomatic in not mentioning these differences. He didn't want to alienate any Stones fans that would be insulted if he called rock music, more basic (even though we all know it is.)

It’s difficult to tell with this guy if he is putting this on or if his attitude is genuine. He’s only one of the most famous drummers in one of the most famous bands, ever. So, is he this genuine and stoically humble, or is it a bit of an act? Either way, it really doesn’t matter to me. I love his interviews and his ho hum approach to them. He does have specific opinions on his musical influences, however. Which is about all he seems enthusiastic about, really. Which kind of leads me to believe that he really is a genuine, humble individual.

This interviewer is a disgrace. No wonder Charlie looks so uncomfortable and bored. At 09:15 Charlie has to say to him that they sitting in Ronnie Scott's and are supposed to be talking about his gigs and the band there, instead the interviewer is asking about him taking drugs in the 1980's. The interviewer focused almost exclusively on The Stones, asked questions that have been asked numerous times before and has clearly done very little research. It's not surprising Charlie wasn't keen on interviews when he had to put up with people like that. Lovely footage of the band rehearsing, and amazing to see what Ronnie's was like back then. It's definitely changed!
