Rolling Stones 1969-11-09 Oakland 1st show 0:00 Introduction by Sam Cutler 1:36 Jumpin' Jack Flash 6:16 Prodigal Son 10:18 You Gotta Move 13:37 Carol 17:08 Sympathy For The Devil 24:03 Stray Cat Blues 28:20 Love In Vain 33:33 I'm Free 38:40 Under My Thumb 41:57 Midnight Rambler 50:11 Live With Me 54:11 Little Queenie 58:07 (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction 1:05:03 Honky Tonk Women 1:09:20 Street Fighting Man As you can hear Sam Cutler say, the Stones were late. Then Keith and Bill's amplifiers fail during the first song. It's really interesting to hear Mick Taylor trying to carry the song with Charlie. He keeps playing his same part, which is mostly an accompaniment to Keith's missing part except on the big accents. This is what separates amateurs from professionals. Taylor and Watts carry on instead of stopping and ruining the number completely. Quite a trial by fire for Taylor, his fifth show as a Stone, but he proved his mettle. A quick decision is made to do the acoustic songs while repairs are underway. After You Gotta Move, Keith moves to try the much smaller amp that has been secured as a substitute for his massive Ampegs, and you can hear a couple of weak chords. According to authorized biographer Stanley Booth, Keith's Les Paul shorted out/failed at this point and Keith hurled it from the stage. But the PA guys had the new amp miked up and, after K switched guitars, the show was able to continue. A very good show. Surprising that this isn't as popular as the second show of the evening, which became the notorious Live'r Than You'll Ever Be bootleg. An interesting feature of the evening were the big video screens behind the stage that promoter Bill Graham had installed, his camera people down on the floor in front of the stage. Everything was going fine until the Stones had the house lights brought up for the end of the show, which usually triggered a rush for the stage, as it did on this evening. The camera folks and their expensive cameras were surrounded and overwhelmed by the excited fans, forcing them to head for the relative safety of the stage and get themselves and the cameras out of the crowd. As this extreme confusion was underway, Sam Cutler decided that Graham was being too rough with the kids rushing the stage and rushed to intercede. The result was a wrestling match live onstage at a Rolling Stones concert, actually a fairly predictable response from an easily excitable Bill Graham, who, no matter what he said in the press, was a complete Stones groupie and probably stressed to the limit trying to make everything perfect, his usual MO. His occasionally confrontational nature was illustrated in full color in the poster on the wall of the Stones' dressing room, BG flashing the finger. Fortunately the fight didn't disrupt the music, the band carrying on once again. But when they hit the dressing room after the show, Graham's poster was defaced with whatever was available on the hospitality food table and an angry Keith referred to BG as a "c**t." After the 1st show tussle, there was some doubt at first if there would be a second show, but cooler heads prevailed. The incident would not keep the Stones from working with Graham again in 72, as he had maintained his reputation for the most professional presentations in the rock business. When he began managing tours, every luxury requested by the artist was supplied. For a price. When Fleetwood Mac got home from the Tusk tour, the one with the small tents onstage for them to duck into and snort coke, they realized there was nothing to show for it but the experience, to their great displeasure. The expenses from all their extravagant demands had eaten all the profits. Quite amazing considering the size and scale of the tour. For CSN&Y, staff members substituted weed for tobacco in cartons of cigarettes resealed to look untouched for smuggling into the Canadian dates. And vitamin capsules repurposed similarly to contain cocaine. Days were spent on this task and it must have cost the band big. It's even sillier when you consider that every fan and dealer in every town on the tour was trying to impress traveling rock stars with the size and potency of their stash.

Dude your info the way you articulate is XLNT! Not the usual usual notes/ copy! I just read your paragraph under the time stamps so I was off by two shows I said his Taylor's third show it was his fifth either way that is trial by fire 🔥🔥🔥🌟 And I wasn't sure if Wyman's rig blew also!? So then the fact that the grateful dead's gear was in the house was a stroke of luck That's great 👍👍 Remember how when Stu got with the Ampeg reps and they started supplying them with prototypes during rehearsals they were blowing amps then and he was just coming up with replacements so this got ironed out I guess throughout the rest of the tour - little no problems The stones were going straight in Taylor and Richards were straight in no kickboxes Boards no Kemper Ax EFX any of that 🌟🌟💪💪

Also Graham orchestrated the Jan '73 Nicaraguan Benefit Concert @ The LA Forum. Ticket sales went into the late night I worked Forum Security Exits w/ a U.C.L.A linebacker by the name of Cargo. Bill Graham was polite but direct no chat up no BS intense guy.

@@lfader The problem this night seems to have been with the electrical system. Keith & Bill had 2 of those big Ampegs each drawing a lot of juice. And Jagger mentioned that the stage monitors were out but the PA speakers were OK.

😢 Love 💕 in vain. Great post!! Love the backstory. To add to that in regards to the amps failing I’ve heard that Garcia and some of the Dead’s folks were at this show and they cruzed over to their facility to get their fender amps for the Stones to use for the next couple shows.

This is absolutele genius!!! 🌟 Composure 🌟 Richard's blows his Ampegs w/ Taylor left holding the guitar duties! 20yr old did his fills then finishes the rhythm chores. (Played 1 extra bar) So with Hyde Park fort Collins Colorado warm up gig this is Mick Taylor's third official Rolling Stones live on stage appearance?? Story I got was that it just so happens in the Oakland Coliseum Jerry Garcia and the Dead's equipment was there and Richard's finished out the show with Garcia's rig!?! Can't make it up !!! 🤣

There's a lot of confusion about the actual release date after the Stones had it remastered at the last minute. From audience reactions to new tunes Jagger announces it seems like they are already familiar with them at some shows. Perhaps the album rollout timeline varied from city to city because the manufacturing delay forced the albums to get shipped out as fast as they were pressed. Considering this is so early in the tour, there's certainly a possibility LIB wasn't out yet there. Anybody know for sure?

@@flipdaboid8007 I would agree with that statement as the folks at the Altamont concert seemed to know the songs and by official records (no pun) they would have had to learn the songs very quicky (within days) to be singing along. Also, looks like the San Diego or Oakland Second show is patched on to the start of I'm Free.

So many better shows than MSG 1969 . Even in 1981 they picked Arizona and NJ for the movie but if you watch the Seattle show they were on fire .

Seems like BG audio taped a great many of the shows he produced. Any guess if there’s a video copy of the band’s back screen projection?
@flipdaboid8007
@flipdaboid8007 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I'd guess there isn't a video copy and the camera feeds went live to the stage. If they were taping the show that would have meant changing tapes in the cameras at least once seems like, very cumbersome to do in that setting and very expensive. Video tape was not cheap and if they were taping, there's a good chance the tapes were erased and reused. Anybody else have any information about this?
