By the end of 1974 all was not well in the camp of the group tagged 'the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world'. Their last two records had received little in the way of critical acclaim, the co-songwriters and main players had drifted far apart and in one notable quarter heroin addiction was rife. So when the man who had, for the previous five years, often been seen as the ensemble's anchor announced his resignation, many fans wondered if the game was all but up for The Rolling Stones.
But those of little faith had no further need to fret once Ronald David Wood, formerly of the much loved but shambolic Faces, plugged his Fender Strat into the Stones' PA, having been offered, to rapturous acceptance, the coveted position formerly occupied by Mick Taylor, and before him, the late Brian Jones.
Ronnie's arrival seemed to breathe new life into the band and their next pair of albums - the funky Black & Blue and new-wave-meets-disco Some Girls - were generally considered their best since Exile on Main Street. And as the 70s wore on and the 1980s dawned, while the records they released and the shows they played certainly had their detractors, glorious moments were always close at hand.
This documentary film covers the Stones' career and music between 1975 and 1983 and includes archive and exclusive interviews, contributions from the finest experts and writers, and rare and classic footage, all soundtracked by the music that, despite it all , remained 'only rock 'n' roll.'

Ronnie W. is indeed a fine guitar player, but arguably some of the best guitar on Black and Blue was provided by Wayne Perkins on 'Hand of Fate' - still one of my favourite Stones tracks.

Ronnie Wood is a tremendous guitarist in every way.....a rock God...just like Keith....go listen to Ron's brilliant work with the Faces, his solo albums and there was no way he was not perfectly cut out for the Stones.

These PC critics piss me of too. But the real shame with this doc is they do not acknowledge Woody's contribution to "Love You Live". Wood's solo in "You Can't Always...'' is one of the finest moments of live vinyl Stones history.

The bitch who's crying about the Hollywood billboard is out of touch. I was 8 back then. I understood it and got a chuckle out of it. My older sister 14, loved it. Ok say we were too young to understand? My sister, my older brother, and myself all had/have IQ's off the charts. So there's that. I knew adults who at the time thought it was just a marketing idea and oh well. They gave it as much gravitas as a paper towel or a coffee commercial. In other words, no one gave two shits. We bought the album, and even though I was mildly disappointed. At 8 yrs old I still played the shit out of Memory Motel, Crazy Mama, Hand of Fate, Hot Stuff, Cherry Oh Baby. That's 5 off the album. So go fuck the critics. Let the music speak.

For giving the rest of us mere mortals hope that we can age that gracefully, the Stones deserve our respect, yes?

The blow up penis was hilarious and I as many others felt that's what it was to be, a bit of a shock and extremely funny. Now at the age I'm at which is close to their ages I can see were it's looked at in a serious way or what it could mean. I still think it was all out of just sheer shock factor and fun, Rolling Stones were always in those early days a shock factor themselves. Sometimes people tend to look to deep at things when actually there's nothing deep about it. For me that time (60-70's) was an incredible time in so many ways. ☮️🙏💜

These talking heads are ignoring Led Zeppelin in the early '70's, so fresh and with audiences that never sat in their seats. LZ just did not handle the media as well as the Stones. They didn't have Princess Radziwill and Truman Capote as traveling partners.
@jdgoodwin325
@jdgoodwin325 5 жыл бұрын
I think Led Zeppelin handled the media better than any band during that period. They handled them by not kowtowing them. They simply ignored the media, for the most part. Very few singles. It was word of mouth by the listening public. Peter Grant was a brilliant manager, and many other bands benefited his work. Just let the band be the band. No fancy stage production or gimmicks. Just 3 1/2 hours of rock and roll.

You could go to a 7-11 back then to get a Slurpee and men's magazines were in full display. So, album covers followed suit. At the same time, women were fighting back. Although no one likes these old geezers, they do express how the Stones lived in a bubble away from how women, even their female fans, would react.
