Man, I grew up as a kid in the late 90s and I remember at some point music just clicked for me. As a listener, I remember being broke but my mom had an old station wagon with some shitty radio. I cherished every time a dope hip-hop song came on. I'd take control of the radio. And man, I know Timbaland and Pharrell stood out. I knew what I liked but I wouldn't always know names until I realized I had to pay attention to the radio hosts announcing who it was. This was in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It got to a point that I now had names and my neighbor, where we eventually moved, had better Internet than us and a better PC. He was older but showed me how he downloaded music on Napster and then Kazaa. I asked him to burn me some CDs, which he eventually did. I worshipped those CDs. I started learning from the internet what album names were or if I went to a store, I'd look around. Back then they had a huge CD section. I'd go through it. Missy Elliott became a go-to. Eminem was huge too eventually by 2000. Justin Timberlake eventually with Timbaland and Pharrell helping producing his albums. Especially Timbo. Mystikal, Jay-Z were others that stood out. But what blew my mind was later, we left the US and an uncle had us move to France from spending a year in Colombia where my family is from. There, a library had a music section. I could take CDs home for free. Case and all. I had to return it every week. I'd take like 3 at a time. I started learning about so many more artists! It expanded my horizons. I liked some rock and metal but there I got into so much more. And rappers too! But then I learned about producers and I learned Timbaland and The Neptunes made so many of my favorite songs! I started taking home all the albums I could find. And I asked the girl there. She knew a lot about music in general. And then faster internet was a thing. And man did I spend hours on Wikipedia reading anything and everything. Who's connected to who, and where from, how, what year, names of albums. Maaaan, even being broke there, I downloaded albums. But it leas me to value it so much and understand they deserves my money. When I started getting money, I made it my goal to buy everything I ever wanted and new stuff too. I still collect CDs to this day and especially now that streaming underpays my favorite artists and bands.
