As a mechanic by trade who has never worked on a scooter or moped, I must say that I found this video very informative. I never knew what a stator did or how it worked. Thank you very much for all the work you are doing to educate those of us that don't have all the knowledge that you do

What he doesn’t know is the red and black plastic tips come off and he’d have a long prob to use and wouldn’t have to place metal pieces to get connection while testing. 🤣🤣. I’ll be sexist…I’m female and know this & I don’t know a ton about engines but knew this much 😂 Lord. 🤦🏻‍♀️

THANK YOU! I've been rebuilding 70's and 80's bikes for 15 years and someone brought me this GY6 and I've been mind-boggled trying to figure out the no-spark. I've never seen a DC Stator. I've always seen the rotor/stator into the Regulator/Rectifier (and onto the CDI box after '79/'80). All the manuals and test procedures I've found are for testing AC stators and I was starting to think someone hacked into the wiring. Seeing the DC stator on your table and the ground wire and pickup wire with no exciter made me so joyful. I totally get it now. Thanks for making this thorough and thoroughly enjoyable video. Many thanks.

The gy6 is just a copy of the honda cg125. The rotor/stator and AC/DC cdi-boxes are more or less the same on all the 50cc scooters.

Thank you sooooo much. I checked everything. All the resistance values, swapped CDI’s, swapped Coils, then finally checked the ‘reluctor to pickup coil’ gap. It was huge. Over 100”. I bent it closer and the bike finally started. 2001 KTM 300 EXC.

Then the stators themselves. I didn't know there were a/c and d/c stators. I work on these things quite a bit. So i do understand what you are saying and will be able to apply it to my endeavors. What a very good instructor you will make or already are. For me a manual takes forever because of my disability to reading and memory loss where as soon as I done reading a sentence I forget what I just read. Bottom line is that you for sharing your talents with mechanical community out here who strive on repairing their own and getting satisfaction when all goes as plan because of unselfish people like you, Thank you

Hey Rolling Wrench, Thank you for this informative video. I just changed out the Stator in my Yamaha 2000 VSTAR 1100 motorcycle. Last year my go to bike shop mentioned to me the bike isn't charging properly and its time to replace the stator. So last week I did it, no biggie right but now I know why they want $700 to change it out, its all labor. I haven't started it yet because I'm waiting for the new battery and I haven't put oil in it yet either. So I have the older stator and I was going through the various test that you thoroughly describe, its a 12 volt 3 phase stator. The stator resistance, was 4 ohms, the requirement is .36 to 44 ohms, it appears low and this may contributed to charging issue. But I believe the issue with it is when I tested the pickup coil resistance, it requires 189-231 ohms. There are 2 wires in the pickup a gray and a black, I switched my analog meter to 100k and tested it. Can I assume the gray wire was equivalent to your blue wire and the black is ground? My reading was nothing at all. I assume I'm doing this right, I think the pickup coil is smoked and attributed to the charging issue. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

I just want to say thank you for taking the time to go through some of the minute things which you find in most videos people don't do it's like people think that everybody just automatically knows and I guess from a certain standpoint certain things people should know but when you point out the very small like the dumb stuff which most people would probably consider that's just common knowledge even in those small things when you go around to the big stuff it kind of brings it all together but I just wanted to thank you because for all of us out here that are trying to learn and trying to grow you know in our brains especially when it comes to electrical stuff the very very small stuff and to teach on a video like you're teaching a 5 year old is probably the best way to do it because if a thousand people watch this every one of them for the most part is going to have one little thing even if they knew everything else one thing is going to stand out that oh I didn't know that and I've had several of those just watching this video oh I didn't know that so appreciate you taking the time teach to us like 5 year olds because when it comes to electrical electrical it can be very confusing and the majority of us don't know much about electrical mine a little bit but not the majority and we don't know a lot about electrical it's a very difficult thing especially when it gets into real depth of running 15 different wires and 60 different places and a mile away in one little vehicle it's making it pretty pretty out there God bless

I just did a 97 arctic cat pantera stator because there was no spark. It only has 3 yellow wires coming from it and thats it. I looked up the specs in a service manual which was .0280 ohms. When I measured it showed me 0.4 ohms. I didn't trust it. Nothing looked to be wrong with the stator. No smell of burn, nothing melted ect. SO I put it back in and figured out my own test. From what I learned it didn't matter any combination of wires. I put a meter across all the wire combinations and cranked the engine. Every combination gave me a voltage of about 9-10 volts. (this is because its not running. Running the voltage will go higher) This is how I knew that the stator was good. Anyway, it ended up being a bad ground to the CDI box. Runs like a champ.

Nice job, well presented! lots of good and important info here. However, there are no "DC stators" , due to the fact that ALL stator/coil assemblies generate alternating current. The AC being generated has to do with the dynamics of the moving magnetic field passing through the stationary electric field of the coils. This induces current inside the coil wires that intrinsically alternates according to the laws governing electromagnetism. For clarification, the direct current we measure in ignition systems is produced after passing thru a rectifier which is a set of diodes configured so that only a portion of the sinusoidal waveform gets passed thru to the switch, essentially converting the signal to DC. What we are seeing at this point is actually pulsed DC and what our digital voltage adapter measures is actually the root mean squared voltage which is listed in the service manual spec sheets as Vrms. If you connect the multimeter directly without the adapter its measurements will be rangey and all over the place.

Hi, first of all, thank you very much for the very clear video. Unfortunately I have a different type of stator so my value will differ. How do I find out the spec (value) so that I can measure it?

so what if I didnt get a reading when I touched ground on the metal and probed blue/white wire? (The test at 15:45) whats that mean?

Thanks, I am just testing my DC stator. as it to out the dip beam on my motorbike. and when it was runnin g Honda says max V caharging out, should be about 15.5 to 16 V max with full beam on at 5000RPM. my stator is pushing over 20v bang goes the bulb . So as you said I have but my meter in the 3 sockets on the plug, and its all over the place on the Ohm;s 0.01 and 2.5 readings are all crazy seems to vary everytime i put the probe in. I am taking it all to mean the stator is a dead fish.

The probes(AKA test leads or leads) on the multimeter have caps on them. That's why you only have a little bit of metal probe showing, if you remove the cap you'll get the rest of the probe length.

I have a ?, I have a 50cc roketa and my wires from the stator to connector do not have a ground, its a a.c. 2 phase with yel,wht,red/blk,& blk/wht. How would I test this? Sure would appreciate some help. Thanks 4 all that you do. Love it.

Thanks from John in the UK. i took some photos of your work. i needed to no the value of the pick coil. i found some have different values. kymco 125 pulse coil data says 40 to 300ohms .just asking if a number comes up lets say 104 at 2k 300 ohms or am I using the wrong value . is it in the value. triumph 900 I bought as a non-runner. Pick up coil ? 521 + 40 ohms manual says .reading 571 ohms no spark. bought a second-hand one bike runs .but as a miss firer around 3000 revs on the road but ok standing and revving the engine.
