A bit of "gentle persuasion" with a decent lump hammer as well as a decent drift (bar), after deflating the tyre and then bent rim can become straight. You were lucky - no apparent damage to tyre. Good you could get those campers out of trouble. Lucky no structural damage. Bet they will be more aware of slippery side slopes in the future. Retired mechanic/machinist/former caravan owner/current 4WD owner in SW Sydney.

Gday Bob, Every time I have tried to straighten a rim, the hammer normally just bounces off, with no change to the rim 😀, but I probably should of used a bigger hammer. Cheers, karl

@@nowhereboundtouring Suggestion. Ask around in the area you are for a place that does welding. They will have oxy acetylene eqpt. Remove tyre, heat affected bent area and gently massage the rim back into shape - oxy heat will make it much easier. Put a weight behind the bent area to act as a dolly - as panel beaters do. Once cooled and back in shape, a flap disc on an angle grinder will smooth all edges. A bit of paint and Bob's your Uncle. Otherwise come to "Uncle Bob's place" in SW Sydney and we'll fix it.

I've tried to bash steel rims with huge hammers and it doesn't work. I've never been able to bend a buckled rim back. Throw away and start again.

Ouch for the rim, I have never seen them do that without taking the tyres as well. Lovely looking place

Yep, it was very strange / lucky. Not even a rub mark on the tyre.

While the cruisemaster trailer hitch probably save the car from rolling as well, it may be worth looking at the Mc Hitch trailer hitch. In the case of solo travelling, where there is no one to help, the car can simply remove the hitch pin and drive away. Then ( if he has a winch) he could self recover , then simply reverse back onto the hitch and drive away again. Looked for a link, but it looks like they have closed shop..
@nowhereboundtouring2 жыл бұрын
I just had a look also, and no more Mc Hitch. We have a Hitch Easy coupling and find it great. We have now been using it daily for over 3 years, with no issues, and no fuss. Cheers, karl

So great to see and hear you two again. We were in Balgal beach when the rains came and had to pack our FF wet. Thinking heading West to the Atherton tablelands would provide for a dryer climate (yes, we are very wet behind the ears) we ran into gushing flood ways and an impassable river crossing that was the road! Turned around in the dark on a narrow track at night and headed for Cairns and a motel room.

Love the idea of a LT to pull vans, I would really like to go down that path, but wife thinks its too restrictive, and she cant drive it.. but with the weights and scalie's these days its a no brainer. Great video guys, - we are setting our van up to suit us as we speak, and going to do a few local trips around Townsville and when we pick up the new ranger in Sept, going to send it out west and start our big lap. Will defiantly keep an eye out for you 2, we hit that button too ;) - happy travels, Pete and Torell - Tindog Travels.
