What's a good replacement for rollovers if our learners aren't using mouses?
@CaptivateTeacher4 жыл бұрын
You could use a click to reveal instead.

I have a rollover caption in my slide along with a a pdf that I imported in as a web object. What I want is for the caption to appear in front of the pdf when I roll over it, but some of the text is partially behind the pdf. I have tried to arrange the caption to the front and the pdf to the back, but when I preview the slide, this does not work. Do you have a fix for this?

Slightly unrelated question. I have pdfs on multiple slides. On the first slide, I have them set to open in slide and can choose the page number I want to see, zoom in, rotate, etc.. However, on the next slide, the pdfs open how they are supposed to but I am not able to interact with them even though the settings look the same for each web object. Do you have an idea of what might be going on?
@albertpool5387 Жыл бұрын
@CaptivateTeacher The question above is actually related to my first question because now that the caption is out front, that is the reason I am unable to interact with the pdfs in anyway
@CaptivateTeacher Жыл бұрын
@@albertpool5387 Well, I guess that's the tradeoff. Perhaps split the slide and have the caption on one side and the PDF on the other.

Hi Paul, Thanks for video! Could you please let us know these "Rollover_Slidelet" is HTML5 support or not. When I am publishing file for HTML5 - The error/popup message is displaying: Some objects are not supported to HTML5 objects. Is there any solution on this?
@CaptivateTeacher5 жыл бұрын
Nitesh Shinde rollover slidelets are maintained for support of legacy SWF courses but you should no longer use them. They are not compatible with mobile devices and they are not accessible for persons who cannot use a traditional mouse.

Hi Paul, How can you extend the length of time that the rollover slidelet , image or text is visible once you rollover. Especially if you have a lot of text for the viewer to read in the slidelet?? Thanks Nicole
@CaptivateTeacher5 жыл бұрын
Drug Testing Institute it's determined by how long the user leaves their mouse over the target area. Keep in mind that a good best practise is to not use roll over objects at all. Not only are roll overs not compatible with mobile devices, they are not considered to be compliant with accessibility standards.

@@CaptivateTeacher Hi Paul. Are rollover slidelets not compatible with HTML 5? Sorry, what do you mean by 'compliant with accessibility standards'? Is there an EASY way to achieve the same result as a rollover slidelet? It seems like there has to be so many actions in an advance action to achieve what the rollover slidelet can do :( Thank you Nicole

Hi Paul! Thanks so much for ALL your videos. They have helped tremendously. Do you have any suggestions on how to force the user to roll over the area before proceeding? I don't see any options in properties. I would love for the project to pause when the rollover appears, and then to be able to select "on success go to the next slide" so when the user rolls over the area... it moves to the next slide where the image appears... and i can have the image appear as long as i want it to. Make sense?
@CaptivateTeacher4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't force a roll over since certain devices cannot do roll rollovers. I have used forced navigation by enforcing clicking of buttons or answering quiz questions and so on.
@keebler1384 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick response. For my purposes users will only ever be taking these modules on a computer. I'm doing a software simulation where I want to show users that when you hover your mouse over certain objects in this software, a window pops up with additional information. So I would like the user to rollover to that area, then have the image appear. Then I want to have narration speak to what is in that image. What I have done in the past is do it as a demo... where I make the mouse move to the area and then I have the image appear. It works well enough. I was just hoping to make it a bit more interactive.

@@keebler138 First of all you can't trigger anything programmatic in nature with a rollover so I don't know how you would do what you're describing, but let's say for the moment you find a way, perhaps with some Javascript or something. You should know that rollovers have fallen out of fashion not only for mobile devices but also because they are discriminatory against persons with repetitive muscular injuries that result in not being able to use a mouse. Therefore good software and for that matter, good eLearning, shouldn't rely on rollovers unless it's strictly an optional component of the module. I would figure out a different way unless you want an accessibility lawsuit on your hands. Your organization only needs one user who falls into this category of people with disabilities to be in violation of most countries' laws. Regular left mouse clicks can be achieved with tab and enter on a keyboard or you can set up keyboard shortcuts. There is nothing you can do on a keyboard to simulate a rollover.

Hi Paul!! Great video !! But if I want to make something similar with responsible project what should I do ? I mean for ex if I have an image with different parts and I want that when rollover or click each part appears some explanation or any thing I may use click box or button + advanced action or is there another easy way. Thank you so much for your explnation.

Roll over captions, images and slidelets are not available in responsive design because it presupposes that such a project will be used on a mobile device. Without a mouse you cannot have rollovers at all, however, there are many things you can do. If you require some one-on-one instruction feel free to purchase one of the instruction options you see on this page: captivateteacher.com/how-i-can-help/

Rollover option is also not supported HTML5. There is any other option to use rollover for HTML5 platform?
@CaptivateTeacher5 жыл бұрын
It's not that roll over isn't supported for HTML5, but rather it's not supported for responsive design. The reason being is that responsive design assumes you are publishing for mobile devices. Devices like tablets and smartphones don't use a mouse so there is no roll over anything on these devices. Also, you should avoid roll over options as it is not accessible for persons with disabilities such as carpal tunnel syndrome or other repetitive muscular injuries that prevent users from using a mouse.

Hi Paul, Is there anyway to only get audio on the rollover images to play when they are selected by the user?
@CaptivateTeacher5 жыл бұрын
The answer to your question is that you can create a roll over caption that contains no text, no fill and no stroke but under the options tab you can add audio to trigger when the roll over appears. My advice is not to use rollovers. while the feature is still in captivate there are a number of reasons to avoid using them. First and foremost is that they are not compatible with 508 compliance. If you wish to design elearning that is accessible to all users you should avoid anything that can only be activated by mouse movements. Secondly, while you can publish elearning that contains roll overs in HTML5, roll overs are not compatible with touch only devices like tablets and smartphones.

Hi Paul, I am trying to have rollover captions with audio and text. My issue is that all of the audio play at once, not when the curser is over the object. Can you help me with this please?
@CaptivateTeacher7 жыл бұрын
First off rollover captions are only available for non-responsive projects (blank projects). Create a standard rollover caption. Select the caption and visit the options tab in the properties panel. From there you can add audio to the caption only. The audio will play when you roll over the rollover area and the caption appears.

Adobe Captivate 2017 is the same as version 9 in this regard. It doesn't make sense to add features that require a mouse for a publishing format that is primarily for mobile devices.
