Interesting that a Rolls Royce promotional film mentions Royce as he was the engineer insisting on quality and reliability whilst Rolls was into speed and performance and a night out at the Ritz. RR during the 50's were pathfinders in turbine technology as they had developed high temperature alloys from the massive investment in metallurgical testing. ' The Conway ' is in the DNA of the majority of turbine engines.

Very interesting to me as my father worked for Rolls-Royce from about 1942/3, when he joined as an apprentice at Barnoldswick (with Rover, before it went to RR), until he quit as an aero service engineer in 1963. He worked on many of the planes featured, including the Viscount and the DC-8. as well as one that wasn't. It was the Ryan X-13, a vertical takeoff fighter built in California from 1955. It has an Avon engine as it was the best in terms of thrust versus weight, I was told (I was a schoolboy at the time). The San Diego air and space museum has one on display at its annex.

This factory of Rolls Royce is important for world industry more than semiconductors producers, like tsmc. Think about this - how many companies in the world produce gas tourbines?

By the 1970s Rolls-Royce went bankrupt and had to be bailed out by the British government. Labour was in power and saw the necessity of saving the high-tech, defense-critical aircraft engine division but not the maker of quaint ultra-luxury cars, so the car division was sold off to the first of a few owners outside the auto industry while the "real" Rolls-Royce company concentrated on the aerospace sector.

Wasn't long after this film that RR came up with the dreadful RB-211 jet engine that almost sent Lockheed broke. It couldn't pass the US bird ingestion test. And it sent RR broke too, but the British Government bailed them out. RR engines still cause dangerous incidents - eg a Trent engine (derivative of the RB-211) exploded a few years ago on a Qantas airliner because a critical oil feed pipe was incorrectly manufactured by RR.

@@Cartoonman154 The British Government could have forbidden the sale if it wished, but it was a commercial transaction between a Russian aircraft company and Rolls Royce. Britain was bankrupt and the government was borrowing huge amounts of money from the World Bank. If the government had forbidden the sale there probably would have been questions from the World Bank - "What do you think you are doing, son? You told us you would make every effort to trade out of your mess and repay the loans."

Watching all of this testing of their cars, and yet, as beautiful as their cars were and as much as they were tested, they still hand built perfect garbage.

Very old fashioned looking cars with mechanical brakes. The competition had modern styling and hydraulic brakes. But at least RR had come to its senses on the engine, dropped the old F-head six and switched to making a clone of the Cadillac Big Block V8 and to using a GM Hydramatic gearbox. I have worked with large industrial diesel engines. RR engines were just as unreliable as other British engines, and not a patch on American engines from Cat or Cummins or Detroit.
