The world's biggest jet engine isn't the General Electric GE9X, but it's a close contender. The true title goes to the Rolls-Royce Ultrafan, which is still in its testing phase. Rolls-Royce has pushed it to full power, hinting at its potential impact on aviation. This massive engine represents the future of air travel.

A lot of Bullsh?t here. Rolls Royce have recently scooped up a $2.6billion order for 400 number of the new R-130 engines to re-equip the entire 70 plus USAF B-52 fleet against US home competition. These are not huge diameter fan engines and will mount two on each pod as per the current B-52 layout. The R-130 will be perfect for equipping narrow bodied aircraft.

It reaches bypass ratios and compressor ratios that wouldn’t be possible with conventional turbofan shafts hence the significantly reduced fuel economy. It uses a power gearbox which is something no engine manufacturer was able to achieve at such thrust levels because there isn’t a gearbox powerfull enough to handle such high forces. The only application of gearboxes are on the P&W 1000 engines and avro RJ but only because it’s low thrust. Consider the fact rolls royce innovated aviation technology when GE was just making fridges and lightbulbs. GE is still stuck on a two shaft design and did nothing but bribe aircraft manufacturers and boasts numbers that aren’t their own. Yes, this engine is revolutionary and if airlines aren’t greedy, you are going to see that on the pricing of your ticket next time you’ll fly to your wife’s boyfriend.

@olumideiluyomade7613 6 ай бұрын
The bottom line is this - it is not exactly new technology. It is merely being done on an unprecedented scale! The engine being developed is a massive wide-body variant of a geared turbofan. Simple. The GTF designed by PW was applicable to narrow body planes only. It produced a maximum of 35,000lbs ft of thrust. The Rolls Royce Ultra-fan on the other hand is designed to produce up to 110,000lbs ft of thrust, meaning it could replace and power even the upcoming Boeing 777x. PW and GE do not have any such engine at that scale currently. Now, because the technology is scalable and modular, RR would be applying the same technology to all of its product over time (wide-body engines). Now, the fact that RR is completely out of the narrow body market means it has its eyes on that lucrative market. With the ultra-fan technology being scalable (It can be scaled down) and the IAE V2500 commitment being no longer binding, RR is free to enter the 24,000 - 35,000lbs ft engine market, which is where all the action and juice is, with a new highly competitive product.
@abarratt8869
@abarratt8869 6 ай бұрын
Boeing’s NMA didn’t happen partly because RR told Boeing publicly that it wasn’t going to build them an engine for it. RR’s experience with the risk share on 787 was terrible and they weren’t going to fall for that again. Looking at Boeing now, seems like a good call by RR. Ultrafan can match PW’s gtf, but will trash GE. They don’t need to beat PW gtf because PW can’t make enough of them. There’s room for two in the market.
@Charles-sn7zy
@Charles-sn7zy 6 ай бұрын
Fall for what ..so it's Boeing's fault they couldn't make a reliable engine to compete with GE on the 787 ? Yeah right !!
@abarratt8869
@abarratt8869 6 ай бұрын
@@Charles-sn7zy Apparently, Boeing obliged RR to stop development work on the T1000 early so that they could "deliver" 787. Then, Boeing had loads of problems and 4 years delay, but wouldn't let RR work on the design during these delays. Development of the T1000 started in 2004, was certified in 2007, 787 entered service 4 years later in 2011. During those 4 years, nothing could change in the engine (because it'd require recertification). Don't forget that GE were having similar problems, they just got lucky that they manifested earlier. At one point early on, the LP shaft (which was suffering from hydrogen embrittlement) on the GeNX was crumbling to dust on zero-hours engines and spewing their power turbine out onto the tarmac as aircraft taxied for test flights. They'd got some treatment process wrong. Like everything else on 787, the original development timescales imposed by Boeing were absurd. RR seems content these days to do business with Airbus (which, anyway, brings in more money). GE must be losing money at a rapid rate on programs like 777X (not delivered), 787 (poor production rates by Boeing). No wonder GE are asking Airbus if they might be let in on A350... If the A350neo and/or A330neoneo does come along with Ultrafan it is going to beat 787 by a country mile on efficiency and kill its market stone dead. That would leave Boeing asking RR to please do a variant for 787. RR might just say "no thank you", for any money. The costs of certifying an engine on an airframe are high. The tooling set up costs are high. All that needs to be recouped over a reliable, smooth running aircraft production run (RR and GE can't get money for engines unless Boeing are delivering aircraft to customers). You don't get smooth running productions runs out of Boeing any more, but the problems were already impacting suppliers nearly 20 years ago. With Boeing as it is at the moment, with their huge delivery issues arising from their poor quality control, RR doing new business with Boeing comes with a large financial risk tariff that Boeing would have to finance.

Given the British Parliament has no engineers in its government or its stock exchange who see engineering as a nasty, dirty, working class business, unlike all other successful nations. RR relies on classic British innovation: lets remember, almost every aircraft flying is built on British inventions, from the fuselage fatigue, window design, first jet engine, carbon fibre, radar, gyro navigation, radio, Hydraulic undercarriage, videos in seat backs, the fasted passenger plane Concord and many others each decried by the British treasury, who shiver at each new British invention.
