I remember her at the Rom River works in Witham. She was briefly used as a replacement for the Hibberd Planet that was cut up on site just after her arrival. She did not stay there long before rail operations ceased and all goods went by road, I had no idea of her historic significance at the time, she looked way more modern than the Planet that preceded her!

Really appreciate you going back and re-editing this. I didn't know that the wheelbase could be adjusted to compensate for slack in the drive chain.
@neiloflongbeck57053 жыл бұрын
All chain drive including catapiller tracks have some form of tensioning system which usually requires the moving of one of the axles to achieve the correct tension.

It sounds fine on my PC with headphones or studio speakers (same ones I use for my music making) but on a mobile was really awful. There are also subtitles.

As a first diesel locomotive featured on the channel I am pleased to say that I do remember seeing information about this locomotive, and I vaguely remember bits of it and you have just added a while lots of info I didn't even know about. Couldn't be more pleased with the result

Kerr Stuart’s scarce diesels are so interesting to me, something I really wish existed more in bulk.

Nice to see her again. When I first saw that previous video, I was thinking it's about a river Rom in Romford, Essex. It's fascinating, the first one is alive & running. Thanks for the upload. Added to a playlist: Transports.

First standard gauge diesel? The R&E was 3 foot gauge at the time. Was she re-gauged?
@AnthonyDawsonHistory3 жыл бұрын
The R&E had a standard gauge rail head. Rom River was used from the stone crushing plant at Murthwaite to take loaded wagons down to Ravenglass.

What do you think of early American diesel electric locomotive?
@AnthonyDawsonHistory3 жыл бұрын
They built upon existing technology developed in Europe in Germany and Switzerland. The concept of a locomotive which was in effect a self-propelled power-station goes back to France in the 1890s with the Heilmann Locomotive which used a high-speed steam engine to generate electric current which then powered eight traction motors, in a Do-Do formation. Brilliant piece of engineering I should do a video on. Diesel only really took off in the UK as a cost-saving measure: "instant" power and only needed a single crew member in the cab. Faster turn around time; didn't need as refuelling as often as steam etc etc. much cleaner and far less labour intensive maintenance wise. But so long as you have cheap coal and cheap labour it's not a problem.

Yeah for more early diesels, early electrics.

@@AnthonyDawsonHistory if your thinking of doing a vid about Hudswell's Junin i recomend Ron Redman's book "Hudswell Clarke the diesel era" and there is a video somewhere online of it on test in HC's yard
@AnthonyDawsonHistory3 жыл бұрын
@@SDE1994 It would be certainly an interesting project. Tho' the claim Junin was the first commercial diesel int he UK is a bit iffy given the existence of Rom River.
