Legio XXI Rapax fighting against coalition of barbarian warbands. Battles filmed during Dymarki Świętokrzyskie event in Nowa Słupia, Poland, August 2016 (turn off subtitles in Polish ;) ) / legioxxirapax
The battles were fought with wooden training weapons for safety reasons, without pre-set scenarios and agreed final results. What happened depended on commanders' and combatants' skills and decisions

stian karud in order to make it more realistic they would need far more troops on both sides to do what you’re asking for. With the amount of troops on both sides that were on hand doing the battle as you and I for that matter would’ve loved to have seen everything would’ve been done too fast for the audience to be entertained. And the fact that most of these guys don’t want to hurt anyone or be hurt themselves slows down their momentum a lot. Seeing that only a few of them actually got hurt shows that they were actually working at not hurting each other while still showing a lot of action. If they had actually used proper Roman tactics the audience would have been awed for sure but the battle would’ve been done in a matter of minutes. Where’s the fun in that? (Intended for the kids and mostly wives, the Men would mostly like to see a real pitch fight.)

Everything I've read about ancient Rome tells me that, by our standards, they lived a very brutish life a died young. Life was even worse for workers and slaves. Excavations from Pompeii show that some Romans died around 20 or 30 years old with chronic arthritis. To an Ancient Roman you would be living in Elysium with lifespan of a demigod compared to them.

Horatio Jones yea living in the slums of the city of Rome was very much living in a charnel house of shit and murder. Though if you were lucky enough to be part of the equestrian class or nobility you lived a life of unbelievable luxury. This hedonistic excess was one of the many contributing factors to the fall of the Republic.

@@aldoushuxley5953 I was using numbers that factored in infant mortality, so I guess that could be misleading. Without infant mortality life expectancy rose to about 50 for the average peasant. I'm assuming the ruling class lived better and longer very similar to today.

@crypt1c_865
@crypt1c_865 4 жыл бұрын
@@karlez7664 Well not really. There were peasants and criminals but remember after many years they wouldn't be peasants or criminals anymore.. People joined the army because of patriotism or they were forced to. Sons of members of the higher classes joined the legions and many devoted their life in military. Peasants were common in auxiliary units but they would gain discipline and after 25 years they would become Roman citizens, they would retire to a plot of land given to them, their sons and future generations would serve in Roman legions.

Ranks are quite disorganized here. Roman Legionaires moved togheter, like a single body. That continuous movements of soldiers here and there in the Roman ranks is unrealistic for a trained and experienced Legion. Their Centuriones and Optiones would have an hell of a job just to inflict the decimation of the unit only to enforce discipline. These looks more barbarians than romans.
@danielefabbro822
@danielefabbro822 7 ай бұрын
@@lasica876 nah, military service was applied only for adults. Every young citizen that had 16 years old was supposed to present himself on the Martian field in order to choose a Legion to join. Unless there wasn't a call for arms, the recruitment was made every year for every generation until further high imperial period reforms of the army. Specifically under Constantine. When things changed. Before, it was perceived as a duty and an opportunity to become a full citizen. But it had a different meaning than what we have today. For "full citizen" I mean a citizen that is also entitled to run politics. While today this right is granted by major age and, of course by the Ius Sanguinis. It means that you get the citizenship of your country by being born from already citizens of that nation. Some nations, like Italy, have (also) the Ius Soli, that means that to get the citizenship, they have to born in that specific country, even without being born by citizens of that country. It mostly depends on the rate of development of the nation itself. But since Romans was at the earliest stages of such development, they didn't granted such rights. Actually, the citizens had to prove their worthy by serving the State for some years. Apart from that, since western civilization went down and suffered a juridical and social fall during medieval times, our civilization didn't developed during those times and so we had to "recover" what we got lost through the Reinassance and consecutive periods. During 1700-1800 there was a huge internal conflict in western societies where the old medieval order represented by the old monarchies and by the power of the Church was challenged by the new republics and democracies. The First World War can be considered ALSO as a struggle between the old order and the new one. It's pointless to remind that the new order prevailed, at least initially, and after the Second World War, forcing the West to adopt democracy and liberal regimes. While the East, intended as Eastern from Europe, Russia, Middle Orient, China, adopted Communism, dictatorial regimes etc due to the fact that the precedent orders and governments was too weak to oppose resistance to the western forces. Of course, it wasn't just fault of the "West", mostly because politicians, activists and great personalities of the period chose such way. But while the West prospered from the continuous struggle and war, exactly like the old Roman times, the continuous condition of tension, struggle and war stranded the Eastern nations as the whole "South" of the world. It was easy, the old good "Divide et Impera". Operated this time by the new western powers that had lead that period. Unfortunately for them, they had no perception or ability of planning since they almost lost all their power in few decades after the last war against the rest of the world cesead. Today America, UK, France, Germany and close nations that arent Latin countries are struggling and opposing the dynamism that was a peculiar trait of the old Roman times. That, for example, to welcome migrants and creating opportunities. In net contrast, all these countries are exactly acting like the old german barbaric tribes of once: closing themselves in front of the world, focusing on just amassing wealth on the hands of few, leaving those precious masses of workers and soldiers without any purpose, job or chance to revitalize their markets. Once such "anglo-germanic" nonsense period will be over, the Western World will return to be fully dominated by the Latin countries that historically was also the best example of integration, cultural domination, egemony. Just to give you an example, Romans conquered half of Europe back in time but once the war of conquest was over, the people of those lands was fully integrated in their "empire". Today we have Americans arguing if they are like the Romans, but you don't see Black people, Latins or even Natives run politics, military business or prestigious economic positions. Now give a look at the South American nations. Sure they are not powerful like America. But you can clearly see natives, Latins, Blacks... All speaking Spanish or Portuguese, all with the same culture. Totally integrated. Not exterminated. Americans... are not even worthy of comparison with Rome. What I'm more interested to learn is how America will evolve once the US will fall apart. Of course the same can be said for China becoming again a secondary nation and Russia slide down into a new Civil War. Times are coming. World always changes. And at the same time it always remains the same.

Are they using wooden swords? Good 💡 Idea!! You want be safe during the battle, you don't want someone to get killed,hurt or injured seriously. In reenactments you might get someone who might get to carried away want hurt someone. You don't need that!! You are there to educate and entertain the public. I know i use to do American Civil War reenacting.
