It's sad to see such negative comments about Sir James' playing. Sure, he's getting old, and arguably isn't in his flute playing prime, but good on him for keeping with it!! I take my hat off to Sir James and his spirit to keep on playing no matter what! - He broke both arms a few years ago, by the way, and did everything in his power to rehabilitate himself so he could keep playing. Bravo to him! I'd like to see how well all the critics here will be able to play the flute, when they hit their 70's.

I would still travel many an Irish boreen to hear him, stretched vibrato, short breath and all. What a consummate artist and how lucky we have all been to hear him. And what he has done for classical music and flute appreciation!!! Just lie down and listen, and smile!

Good grief people. I hope all of you can play HALF as good as Mr. Galway. How dare people criticize his performance. Have you never had to play while sick? I know I have. I’m analyzing this composition and found it extremely helpful. There’s only ONE GALWAY. I’m fortunate to have heard him live FOUR times and he’s phenomenal. Get over yourself, or perhaps, practice?

Sir James, a legend of the flute !! A true master! Despite his years still making music, and he does it very well! Sir James has inspired millions of flute players all over the world, and his sound has not yet been matched, I, who am a luthier, believe he possessed a secret in the opening mouth of his flutes, (He had to reshape the caliber and shape of the Hole) so it had an incomparable sound with the flute.

He is said to have adapted the mouth holes of the head of the flute, made them the same as a flute he made for him, Muramatsu, which achieved an optimal mouthpiece by the shape of the hole, and then all the flutes he bought to make them With an identical orifice, and according to some who could see their flutes had a more square form than normal. But this is impossible to accurately establish the measures because this was his secret.

I hate to hear(read all these negative comments) musicians are all open to these comments have you heard this or him playing it they play and perform and give of themselves to be shot down by whoever The best musicians never give negative comments and I,ve met a few . Those who feel that they should pass on their knowledge first do it then Talk about it !!!!! D

Not his best performance and there were intonation issues at the beginning but still a lovely piece. I saw him live in March 2013 and he was fantastic and we all have those "not so good days" and perhaps this was one of his. Still think he's fantastic. :)

I also play the flute so I understand the technical difficulty with that... but it's possible to practice so it doesn't get out of position, and when he was younger he totally owned these types of passages... I'm worried that he's losing his mechanical control with age :( or maybe he was just having a bad day (he still sounds AMAZING though)

I agree with Shelly. His tone is too much like an oboe. But I also agree that he is the best.

At his older age he's lost is "signature" vibrato. He needs, after his millions to step aside for the young new rising stud Denis Bouriakov. Just listen to Denis. As a counterpoint I'm sure that Galway will be recorded as the best flutist of our time.

I stand confident that Galway may well be the best flutist of our time. It's not because I'm jealous as a flutist --- it's because he is a betrayer in that he recorded several of his recordings to accomplish "cross-over" recordings to popular music as "Annie's song", etc so that he could sell his recordings and put more money into his coffers. It's time for him to step aside --- he has been eclipsed by the young flute stars on the horizon: Denis Bouriakov, Jasmine Choi and Emmanuel Puhad. That is, of course, if you wish the late William Kincaid, affectionately known as "the father of flutists" as it is he taught more flutists to become principal flutists of major symphony principal flutists than any other.
