You missed out on some of Bioware's best if you haven't played BG1 & 2. Do yourself a favor and go play them and PlaneScape Torment. Also, this game is far more DOS 3 than it is truly BG 3.

this is not baldurs gate. It is not even an accurate depiction of D&D. I have the pre release, it is a solid RPG heavily inspired by but clearly NOT D&D. The purple Drow are a dead give away for that. Tieflings are uncommon and rightly untrusted as they are literally fiend blooded. Dragonbourn are cool, but natural homebodies and again rare. Explaining what one would be doing on a nautiloid would be interesting. Gith are generally elitists who are in most respects superior to the other races. Duregar hate everyone especially themselves. Finally Shar is a totally evil goddess.

One cool thing about romancing a character that I noticed is that if your character have come to fancy one of them a certain amount, they will actually call out their name in battle if they get downed.

Spoiler below! Larian has said last event of Hell some romances are ok with several while some only one person. As for Mintara it seems if you has chosen her path in act 1 you can continue this in act 2 if right choices are made The dream lover and Illthid mind powers has changed. Seems you now get a tadpole skill tree if you so choose that also triggers the dream lover scenes.

I'm most interested in forming a throuple with Wyll and Karlach, because I think the idea of a rival to lovers arc between them sounds really interesting! OMG THANK you!! This is the FIRST romance vid I've seen that really does justice to the Astarion approval triggers. So many guides say you have to be cruel, mean and borderline flat out evil to get his approval. That is patently not the case, I've got him almost to max approval before the end of act one just by being quirky and sarcastic. OK I *DID* kick a squirrel, but really it *bit me*!! 😂😂

As far as romancable companions go, I find myself drawn to Laezel or Karloch . Laezel's often abrasive, but thus far in the early access, I find her to be one of the more honest and direct members of your party. Karloch's got the whole damsel in destress thing going for her and I can't help myself. As for the others. . . Wyll's pact with a demon spells trouble. Gale's still enthralled by Mystra Shadowheart's memory and her faith to Shar could potentially bring problems Asterion's willingness to violate your trust when you allow him to feed is a clear red flag. And Haslin knows far more than what he's letting on and in my experience with these types of tales, that's not a good thing.

For example Edmund , if you grant every of his request he mantains his arrogant view of the worlds and would never think about considering you an equal. Unfortunately, most game studious are American-owned and when you look at American content policy, anything related to sex is on par with terrorism, hate speech or inciting criminal behaviour and potentially exposing children even to just hints of a sexual relationship is an absolute taboo, so American game studious shy away from it even in games for adults. Thankfully, Larian is a European studio with a healthy attitude to sexuality, but I bet they will catch a lot of flack from "concerned American parents" as soon as those become aware of this game.

Gale is a bit more complicated. You can get high approval from him & he still won't romance you. Wyll was rewritten, so we won't really know until the game comes out. I would like to try to see whom I can get with. I'm going to have my character try for: Astarion, Halsin, Raphael, & Abdirak. It doesn't hurt to try now, does it?

I planned on romancing Astarion first but I honestly don't know if he would like all the choices I will be making. I don't plan to play heroically but I also won't be needlessly cruel for fun either. I won't be brandishing power over others just for the sake of feeling more powerful which Astarion seems to like. I guess I will see who I will naturally gravitate towards. The more I think about it the more I see that it may be Shadowheart. On another note I think they said in the recent PFH that you could be polyamorous. That's not an option I am interested in but apparently the option is there. Idk what characters you could be poly with tho. It seems they all have their different preferences so some may be open to it and some may be strictly monogamous.

You don't need to be needlessly cruel to get Astarion. You can hit some disapproval points without it adversely affecting romance potential as long as you're gaining enough approval to have his affection meter in "like" territory.

Yeah i hear you! I would definatly not romance the same character as you, but how you describe the way you play, well, i play like that too. Like in the village of druids...i really hate the elf women there. And the thieflings, well, one asked me to assassinate the rival...inatead of just leaving. To me, my obvious choice is to make the thiefling leave. Kill that asshole druid, then let them seal themselves. Team with the Goblin and prevent them from attacking the thiefling. And romance that Drow. Everyone get what they deserve. In a good way. Well...thats just me. I wonder what type of peraon that makes me. Hahahaha Back in the days i would have been lawful good...

I play a bit chaotic. Sometimes good choices, sometimes not. Astarion grew attached to me after enough approvals happened. Being kind to him and his condition plus letting him feed on you goes a long way. Once I gave him the necromancy of thay tome, he confessed he liked my character and wanted to be physical. I don't think you have to be incredibly evil to win him over.

I'm really happy Larian went down this route for romancing. I didn't like how bioware made gender/race specific romance options (except for DA2). Few of the option were up my alley but Morrigan, Tali, and Cassandra were and I had to be a dude character :(. My problem, is that I don't really care for any of the "morally good" aligned characters that would most approve of the type of character I wanna play, which sucks lmao (well, except for Shadowheart. She's a cool character, but I still am not as interested in her as I am others). So I'm really hoping the faith I have in Larian for being pleasantly surprised by what's possible isn't unfounded. I wanna romance Astarion, and I wanna play a character that's somewhat mischievous but not overly/aggressively cruel, and also quite helpful/understanding. Why would Lae’zel want to romance you if you’re racist against her and ignore her desires to find a creche? You’re roleplaying a character in a living world, the characters will react accordingly to your choices. Larian is trying to make them as “lifelike” as possible, and that means making them react accordingly to you. You can play how you want, but that doesn’t mean the characters have to put up with you. A big part of RPGs is your actions having consequences… good or bad.

Why would they just change all of that especially if the main character completely goes against everything they stand for? There’s a reason this game has so much replay ability. You aren’t going to get everything you want on one play through and that’s how it’s supposed to be.

I was chill when I said "I'm not a fan" and I unleashed the chaos under my comment😂🤣. It was just an opinion. In Mass Effect I could romance Garrus regardless of my choices. In DA2 there was the system friendship and rival romance. What I meant about my comment is that I'm not a fan of when approval is too "mechanical", which is why I'm not a fan of the DAO system of friendship and romance. I hope that the system in BG3 it is not strictly set on numbers and tiny bits of approval.

@@astrea4020 You can have different kinds of relationship. Maybe the two characters can just share an attraction but not share some values. The relationship would be then based on just casual intimacy. Maybe the relationship is toxic at the start but your character evolves with time. Relationships are made of compromises after all. This is a game I get it, but in my opinion a romance can be just more of accumulating numbers. Of course this whole discourse is about my IDEAL system of romance. Let's see how the game let things evolve in time. 😂 I didn't expect your reaction, it was a chill comment.

I like Lae'zel's personality & overall looks more than Shadowheart's. But Shadowheart's general likes align far more with my own than Lae'zel's. Gale I personally find annoying due to his constant condescending tone. I don't think I'll get on very well with Astarion outside of being a snarky bitch on occasion. Wyll sounds like someone I'll get on great with....until the drama of his pact comes into it. Karlach might end up being my choice. From what we've seen of her she's like the Good version of Lae'zel. A little hot-headed *grins* & too quick to act, never thinking of the big picture. But unlike Lae'zel is far more altruistic in her reasoning. So the spirit I find attractive in Lae'zel, but with a moral compass that aligns better. Shall see in-game. Halsin is another option. He seems like a Druid done right from what I've seen. Ultimately kind-hearted, but with a harsh & just-so overtone. Like anything in nature. He is beautiful & ultimately good, but to be respected & maybe even feared. Most games just make Druid hippies & completely ignore the duality of nature. He'll probably end up being a favourite of mine.

My first couple playthroughs I was surprised at how quickly I was earning approval with Gale, I guess because of my tendency to parley with enemies and ask about lore. I was never able to get his romance to trigger though cuz I think it was bugged.

I had one close moment with karlach where we couldnt even touch each others - but every other character (except for astrarion) is so jealous now, they are bitchin at me for it and wont talk any further :O Shadowheart even told me how she doesnt like me anymore due to me smelling like "a naive little tiefling I just rescued". Didnt feel right since her approval of me is very high already.. I have a feeling you wont be able to romance shadowheart if you ever show interest in any of the other characters. I'm curious if it will stick this way. Larian said poly relationships should be possible with some of the charcters at least. Be free to tell me about your experiences with this pls! :)

You don’t have to engage with any of the romances and can reject the dream lover. You can still play the character quests once you get to high approval. Romance isn’t required at least for the ones in act 1.

In earl, access I stored some random ring into my camp chest and Wyll INSTANTLY disliked me a LOT and was unsure if it'd be good if he was in my camp... I didn't have him in my party ONCE!

currently restarting the whole game after *too many* hours because I never realized the celebration was the point at which you have to decide, and I started playing with 0 knowledge so I completely missed picking up Astarion until after the party 😂 can't even be mad, just laugh at myself. *by too many hours I mean the end of the game is literally not far away oops, at least I got Halsin 😤

I will be romancing Halsin. His kind heart and wisdom was always such a wonderful addition to the game, so since the very beginning of early access I was one of those begging for Halsin to become a romance. I made a female tiefling ranger, who is a widow and a mom, expecting to romance Astarion, but she works so much better with Halsin in philosophy, values and life experience.

Been trying to romance shadow heart but haven’t had any success. On act one I think I had talked to her but she blew me off and the game was trying to make me have a romance towards astarion more but he isn’t someone I’m trying to romance. It been getting there slow and steady with her showing me her past but I feel like I missed a step to the romance and now the game doesn’t know where the romance is at. Is it possible for the game to get confused by your own indecisive romance choices? 😅

Been running my warlock through a complete EA(at least if you take the Grymforge elevator) no romance whatsoever(no try) but I’m pretty much closer to Gale & Astarion since I always go for arcana & lore..I’m more curious about Lae’Zel..but with full game arriving soon I just want to meet Karlach fully, my one EA playthrough mightve bugged out..Didnt use the tadpole at all so no dreams.

Not bugged. You have to use the [Illithid] [Wisdom] checks (in EA) to trigger the flags for the Dreams. If you don't use it then there are no flags to trigger them.

These decisions remind me of fallout 4. I started thinking about having a romance with paladin Dance and I ended up with Mc Cready. McCready's personality caught my attention too much. Now that I think about it my current partner, he has a very similar personality. Until now I realized XD and i adore him. Now I no longer need these games for the romance, but they are still very entertaining.We will have to see what happens, I bought it since the beta came out and I only played a little to see how it was and now we have to take advantage of it.

I was planning on romancing either Astarion or Wyll, but after the Panel I might play as one and romance the other... or Halsin. Second run is definitely for Shadowheart. Just like Astarion, she has too many interesting plot hooks for me not to. Maybe I'll save Halsin for a Dragonborn druid run for the ultimate furry experience. After that, I might see how ace Tav can be unless I feel like playing Gith first.

I'm not really feeling any of the main companions tbh. It depends on how well theyre written. I got too burned with Mass Effect 2 and 3 which really shoehorned love interests at you. Some of the options felt really contrived. A lot of the decisions to picking someone for me anyway will be my character. Not that Im huge RPer but it would have to fit with how my own character is like.

It's more: Good = Gale, Wyll, Karlach; Halsin Grey = Astarion, Shadowheart, Laezel; Evil = Dream Lover, Minthara. Idk about Minsc and Jaheira as I don't know their characters, but they seem good or grey at worst. Having an additional evil romance or two could be good for balance but we shall have to see! I do think that every character has positives, some less than others (even the evil characters).
