The American soap opera "Dallas" was a re-run in the '90s. At the end of the '70s or the beginning of the '80s Ceausescu actually allowed for Dallas to air. He wanted to show the Romanian people the decadence of the Capitalist Western society. It backfired spectacularly because people started to ask themselves why they cannot have cars and houses and clothes and food like them American Capitalists. The airing of "Dallas" is credited by some (like the makers of the documentary "The 8os: the decade that made us") to have contributed to the falling of the Ceausescu regime. When Larry Hagman the actor playing JR Ewing visited Romania, he was widely recognized in the streets and people started chanting "JR! JR!"
@tbkswagg4 ай бұрын
It was the same, Hungarys most viewed series was Dallas. Although Hungarians were and are too much lame to start a revolution. 2006 was the last one and Orban hijacked it, going strong since now. Although now he has an enemy which is considerable, coming from the husband of a failed politician from the party. lol
@jordan21044 ай бұрын
I actually met Larry Hagman back then when he came to Romania. I was a student in Cluj-Napoca and he gave a speech at one of the Universities (art or something). I remember one of the students there giving him one of those little hats from Maramures because Larry was a well-known hat collector. Then when he went out to his car, he actually stopped and chatted with the students right there on the sidewalk. I couldn't believe that I was standing right next to JR lol! Good times...
@Donkeypapuas2 ай бұрын
Bullshit. It was aired because it was a good series. And it was buy with discount as many other american series (Roots, Kojak, Mannix). At the beggining of the 80s Ceausescu banned the import of movie or series payed in dolars. Only those in barter was accepted. And when the programs was dastrically shorted, even in that period some movies was aired, in a sort of piracy mode. With the title changed and splited in sequences.

Fun fact about Romania's National Audiovisual Council (CNA) A year ago, a TV channel named Nașul TV (no relation to the movie, as far as I know) invited Sacha Stone, a british influencer, to one of the broadcasts. This influencer showed images of alleged Dacian tunnels under the Bucegi mountains, tunnels that "lead you to other continents" who also "have alien technology inside of them". Normally, CNA issues fines to TV channels that spew such lies but, CNA decided to have a little fun and basically told Nașul TV to go to the Bucegi mountains and find evidence to support the existance of these tunnels or else they'll get fined. They got fined.

The best thing about Romanian Tv in general is that every foreign movie or cartoons were in English or another language accompanied by subtitles, so learning this language was pretty easy. I am amazed at how behind Germany is regarding this. They struggle with one of the easiest languages on earth because they dub everything 😂
@DarkVeghetta4 ай бұрын
This. I was appalled when Mini Max and other children channels started to dub cartoons about 15 years ago. It was entirely unneeded and a horrible idea. Once, at university (history/languages branch), I asked how many of my fellow students learned English from subtitled cartoons. Roughly 85% of the class immediately raised their hands, which was about what I expected.

I'm a British guy, who has worked with many Romanians in the UK so this is fascinating. It reminds me of a sketch show in the 90s called The Fast Show. One of the running sketches was a made up foreign TV channel called Channel 9. The comedians would basically make up a language and talk nonsense. The level of protection also reminds me of Hong Kong. My primary school teacher hosted all the major sporting events like the Olympics.

ive never been to Britain but ive seen bits of British TV that lowkey remind me of OTV (especially Piers Morgan). but what would you say is the closest channel to OTV though?
@phoneboxchicken41084 ай бұрын
Difficult to say. We have a lot of obscure channels on satellite/cable TV so there's probably a similar one on 'channel 687' or wherever that's almost as mental as OTV. If you want your plain old far right, anti working class, anti immigration Fox News type of thing, you have Talk TV (owned by the Murdoch family) and GB News. The latter being more crazy. Our media is generally dominated by right wing people who went to private school, and rant about foreigners, unemployed people, and the EU (even though we've finalised all that nonsense).

Holy shit man, the barrel showing how Elodia was melted just unlocked a memory. I saw it live on my parents tv, I remember it so vaguely because they REALLY wanted to get her husband in jail. At one point 90% of people thought she killed herself. They had so many news insisting she was haunting homes after years of her disappearance, this being shown also on other programs, Romania TV being the adopted son of OTV. After the death of OTV, Romania tv was the prime villain. Arguements, blown out of proportion situations, big actors or overall personalities suing the channel for labeling them as dead or with an incurable illness. Fake medication ads, scams. Many claims of ''x didnt die the way you think they did! They were actually working for the cia and were executed by the spies!'' and so on. They once claimed we're getting hit by a meteorite of quote unquote ''impressing proportions with high speed'' only to clarify later (2 hours of waiting) that it ''just missed us'' Lately they've chilled down, but they're still like the long lost cousin of otv, in the limits of television laws at least. All romanian channels have their own stories that could very much be clasified as social experiments more than anything. For example the antennas ; antenna 1 (main entertainment), antenna 2/star (gossip tv), antenna 3 (this one's got bribed by the cnn), and their one sided arch nemesis prima tv (which due to its rating dying out since wolf became dog has gotten petty and just mocks any antenna every chance they get. Despite their hosts having just as bad, if not even worse grammar.) There's also Kanal D which is the founding father of a romanian childhood with grandparents. If the turks didn't buy us with their food, they bought us with this one channel.

While Whatching this I kept thinking of the portuguese version of this: Correio da Manhã/Morning Mail and their famous channel CMTV. Here a list of some of the things that have happend over the years in their channel: -They once tried to interview Ronaldo during a press review and he refused to answer their questions. -They tried to interview Ronaldo another time except this time he threw their microphone into a lake and they got a diving team to get it back. -They interviewed a "witch" about a satanic ritual that happend in a random village. -Their reporters have sweared or appeared drunk live on TV multiple times. -Their broadcoasts are not very diferent from OTV ones. -While the other tv channels put their ads at the same time CMTV doesn't care and do what they want. -One time they went to Avalade stadium and were just insulted by Sporting fans(Sporting had lost) -When football games are happening they have this program where you have a bunch of silent comentaters and a guy screaming what is happening on the game(without them showing any visuals or game audio because they can't) -During the floods we had this year they edited a joke video of a toy car in mud and said it was a real car that got flodded. -When a woman disappered a few months ago they had a team always on site reporting the searches that were being made by the local vilaggers, that consisted of them digging holes, and walking around in the forest. -And much much more. The main diference between OTV and CMTV is that they do have a lot of normal news and that football broadcast I talked about is very popular like their other sports news. So because of that they are still well and kicking even if most people consider them a joke. EDIT: I almost forgot about the joke that CMTV reporters reach murder scenes before the murder happend ahhaha

I remember being in late primary or early secondary school and seeing one evening 'The Ghost of Medgidia' on OTV for a couple of seconds before my parents changed the channel. What makes things funnier is that I was living in Medgidia at the time and attended a local school. The next day at school, all the kids were talking about the ghost, with most of them being extremely scared while others were saying that it was just a stupid prank. I remember that teachers told us that it was bullshit and that we shouldn't pay attention to it, which was too late. Kids from my school and from all over the town were freaking scared and sustained that they have indeed seen the ghost and started making up stories. I remember hanging out with kids from around the neighbourhood and talking about the ghost, some kids claiming that they have indeed seen the ghost in their block of apartments which most of the time resulted in all of us going to 'investigate'. What a great time to be alive!

The lore of Dallas goes way deeper. It was one of the select few Western series that were allowed on Romanian TV during communism, as Ceausescu assumed that it would fuel anti-Western disdain among the proletariat as they witnessed the decadent materialism of the Texan bourgeoisie. Instead, the Romanian proletariat compared their crumbling system of rolling blackouts and bread lines to that of the capitalist Texans and came to admire the latter rather than disdain it. Yet another in a string of costly miscalculations on the part of the "genius of the Carpathians". But the question on the minds of an entire nation remains: what the hell happened to Elodia?

OTV was the greatest thing ever in the 2000s. Everyone watch it, nobody took it seriously but watch it for entertainment value. The difference between then and now Tv stations is that everyone took Dan Diaconescu with a grain of salt, while the older population don't even question today news. As outrageous as his party seems, some of the things he was advocating for were so ahead of the curve that he got straw maned out. The thing with the 20k euro is a strawman, he wasn't saying that, he was saying that he wants to give this money as an aid to small businesses not all citizens, a program which the other parties instituted later in 2017, giving 40k not 20k. What I hate him for is the Oltchim stuff, he ruined the livelihood of a whole town with his shenanigans.

But when the Çeauşeşcu night speech came on before programs ended every day,i used to jump in the house and on the bed screaming "Çeauşescu PCR" repeatetly and not one of our neighbours used to say shiiieettt out fear... 😈 the security forces would hear they reproached a "loyal citizen" from praising the all powerful leader and the party...
