I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (July 3), this was the basis for our Sunday School Lesson for the Day. It was entitled "Ignoring God's Truth within Us." There are two hymns that are good compliments to this Scripture, regardless of denomination. They are as follows: "One Bread, One Body," written & composed by John Foley, and "All My Hope on God Is Founded," written by Joachim Neander (1650-1690) and paraphrased by Robert Bridges (1844-1930).

Knowing implies intimacy as Adam knew Eve. Those who know Jesus are those who are in a relationship with him and trust in his finished work. By faith a believer is justified because they understand how Christ paid the bride price for their redemption. Knowing by faith that our sins have been imputed to Jesus, and his righteousness has been imputed to our account is what renews our minds by the power of the holy spirit. Circumcision of the heart comes from identifying with Jesus through faith, and this is what makes us clean. We can't do anything to get right with God no matter how much we try to keep the law, but God gives us a new spirit. I tried to get right with God by doing the law only to find myself even further away from Him. This situation compounded because the more I realised I couldn't get right under the law, the harder I tried to get right with the law. I found myself wrestling with two diametrically opposing views of Paul, both of which sent my mind into a spin. On the one hand Paul says in Romans 2:13 it's not hearers of the law but does of the law who are justified, but in Romans 3:20 he says that by the deeds of the law no man is justified. This exhausted me to the point of having a breakdown and in the end I had to give up trying in order to keep my sanity. But years later I realised it was all because of what Jesus did.
