@Damo-np7ul10 ай бұрын
@@robdoubleyou4918 The majority of Roman slaves were not mistreated, slavery aside, it made little sense to mistreat abuse or damage your own property that could otherwise be sold. Archaeological evidence from places like Pompeii have given as glimpses into their lives. Whilst not having any rights slaves were not considered as lowly as we may have thought based on other examples of slavery. Slaves could also earn or be granted their freedom and regularly did. Free slaves were the equal of others and had the same rights short of participation in politics which was limited to Romans. There was no stigma or shame attached to being an ex slave they were even said to wear a skull cap through pride and to signify their status.

I think this project is amazing. I hope they go and add more colour to the columns and some of the statues that were left white. Both Greek and Roman art and architecture were coloured, some modestly, some over the top for modern taste.
@bernardfrischer632610 ай бұрын
We incorporate the latest scientific results on polychromy. The model is by no means entirely white. Why not subscribe to Yorescape and take tours such as "Athens Reborn: Acropolis," "Rome Reborn: Pantheon," "Rome Reborn: Roman Forum," and "Rome Reborn: Baths of Caracalla" to see sculpture, walls, and floors close up with all the color restored? In "Flight over Ancient Rome" (what you are viewing in this KZbin video) you are seeing the city from a height of 126 meters off the ground. So, a lot of the detailed color is not detectable.
@sotony748310 ай бұрын
There'd be little point in using expensive white, cream or naturally tinted /veined marbles imported at great cost from all over the world for the purposes of extravagant display only then to paint them over. You could just use cheaper local structural stone (tuff) if you're going to paint them. In fact, marble veneers were used extensively to cover over cheaper building materials, because marble's delicate natural colours were preferred to paint. It's an exaggeration also to say Roman buildings were polychrome all over - just look at the depictions of temples and other buildings portrayed in landscape frescoes by Roman painters who saw such buildings in real life and depict them with some exceptions as overwhemingly white/cream/yellow buildings with red (tiled) roofs. Having said that, the 3D buildings in Rome Reborn do look very clean for structures standing for centuries in what must have been a pretty smoky city.
@bernardfrischer632610 ай бұрын
The fabric of most of the buildings in the phase of Rome seen in our model was brick ("opus latericium"). This is true even of public buildings such as basilicas and temples. The brick on the exteriors was generally covered with stucco, sometimes finished with a "drafted masonry" pattern to imitate blocks of stone. Marble, sliced into thin plaques ("opus sectile"), was used for such things as floors and interior walls. Marble and granite was often also utilized for the columns and pillars of important public structures or elite residences. In other words, marble was not the construction material used for the fabric of buildings ("ashlar masonry"), so there is no issue about whether or not the Romans painted the marble construction blocks of their buildings. The question the Rome Reborn team has wondered about over the years is whether the Romans painted the stucco revetment of their buildings any color but (the archaeologically attested) creamy white color seen in our model. For a basic introduction to the fascinating question of the use of color (including polychrome marbles) in Greek and Roman architecture, see oxfordre.com/classics/display/10.1093/acrefore/9780199381135.001.0001/acrefore-9780199381135-e-8184 For our period, the relevant section is "Imperial and Late Antique Periods (1st to 6th Century CE)." @@sotony7483

Thank you! The video is intended to whet your appetite to take our 2-hour, expert-led virtual tour of the entire city seen from the air. Its free for seven days on our app, Yorescape (and $29.99/year thereafter). Yorescape runs on smartphones (iOS/Android) and PCs (Mac/Windows). You can take our virtual tour of the city from the air (Rome Reborn: Flight over Ancient Rome) and also our 13 other tours.
