Rome Total War - The Carthage Experience

Venture to the sunny shores of North Africa, ride elephants, resist Roman imperialism.
It is insane how fast this channel has grown over the last few weeks, I'm so grateful for all the views and comments. I've got a ton of video ideas going forward, and lots of suggestions in the comments too. I'm excited to keep making more!

What perplexes me about Carthage is they don’t get archers… but they do have war elephants with archers

Also, I'm pretty sure there are Carthaginian archers... in the Numidian roster (they're called Carthaginian in the game files iirc)

I think it was for balance reasons. Carthage has solid infantry and very good cavalry. Access to archers would make them easily equal to the Romans.

@@RRW359 All I read is either Pleistocene or imported specimens. Three wave of migration have been theorized but they must have happened in the glacial era, cause you know, elephants are not well known for their dumbo wings or for swimming like dolphins

@@OltrePodcast_Official You didn't say they had to be in the RTW era, although humans probably got to Sicily prior to their extinction. They were smaller than even the small Elephants the Carthaginians used, though.

@@RRW359 yes, probably. but if elephants in sicily were so abbundant we would have records of greek cities like syracuse making extensive use of them, which they didnt. Other hellenistic kingdoms made use of the pachiderms, but they were all imported specimens, not native for sure.

As long as they don't have stone walls, in early game you can conquer almost any settlement with one unit of elephants and several units of Balearic slingers.

Yeah in this video the player was pretty lucky. On very hard, very hard the Brutii and Scipii will attack in full force even before you can send your full army to attack the first Numidian city or just after.

There's one thing you need to know about early game Roman units: War elephants beat the sh*t out of early Roman units 🐘🔥

@Josué Ortega, I don't remember much about Rome 1 , but the velites and the pilum fire would make a lot of damage to those elephants.

I know that this comes as an obvious fact but the Senate only reinforce the 2 Julii towns and Scipii capital. The Brutii was always left out. See where I’m going with this ?

@@Hyde_HillMobile version makes it much harder to fight manually. Therefore, I adopt the auto resolve only challenge. Carthage game plan: 1. Don’t overcommit, don’t overextend. 2. Abandon Caralis. 3. Sicilian foothold. 4. Sink all Roman ships/transports. 5. Consolidate Magna Graecia. 6. Turtle and Boom. Explanation: Same problem with the Greeks and Seleucid, Carthage can be overrun and salted less than 10 turns. Assault Numidia, risk being overextended. Storming Spain, risk being picked off. Sicily is the most logical choice, amphibious assault. Letting the Scipii take Syracuse and gain nothing other than Messana. Take Syracuse from the Greeks first and occupy it. Develop max barracks and stables like Carthage. AI almost always attack Sicily and Africa, rarely on Iberia and Balearic Island. Build groups of 4 biremes to sink all Roman ships as well as transport the Sicilian force to Magna Graecia. Since the Senate only reinforce the 2 Julii settlements ( Arretium, Ariminum ), drive out the Brutii from Tarentum and Croton. From here, defend and build up. Keep the Brutii confined in Greece. The same goes for Numidia and Spain. Play the defensive game with Numidia. They’ll never beat your military, only that they are just flies pestering about. Hire all possible mercenaries in Spain. “New Carthage” ( Nova Carthago ) can still push you back. Thwart all attacks and maybe take Asturias to relieve the western flank. Only sack the cities that you are definitely sure that it’s growth rate is 5% and above. You can sack Capua. Tarentum, Syracuse and Carthage should be your military camps. All other settlements safe from attacks should produce fleets of 4 and build up economy. Abuse Milquart temples for trade settlements and Baal for Africa and chokehold strategic recruitment ones.

1:24 That Caralis invasion. I swear to Baal, EVERY....SINGLE...GAME...These Julii will just send one Legion after another until they take it. Naturally the counter is to play to Carthage's historical strength, namely: naval superiority. Yet that dose not mean the place is safe. Mess up patrolling the island ONCE, and they will somehow manage to place half their arsenal in the place. Patrolling the north of the island sometimes is not even enough as the Julii expand on Gallic lands and later into Iberia and get more ports from which to send another invasion fleet, as if you are the Mongol invasion from Medieval 2 and they must drop EVERYTHING to end you.

Ah yes, Caralis, also known as ‘What’s the hell is the Julii’s deal?!’. Also in my campaign, after I took Messana, the Scipii just sorta bled out, they attacked the Greeks at Syracuse several times but it never amounted to everything due to my intervention. After that they were basically a non entity and then they got destroyed by a slave rebellion because they only had their capital.

I'm playing Macedonia right now, I hope this will be as fun too. The only thing I figured out is, that Bruti hates me and also Dacia. But Dacia loses every time, needs over 10 rounds to gather something similar to an army and then loses while trying to attack my cities.

Carthage only autoresolve challenge. Crossing Alps, no. Taking Sicily, yes. 1. Everyone will fight you. Trade rights only, asking map info is a casus belli. 2. Attack Syracuse ASAP. Make peace with the Greeks. 3. Take Messana. Build and sink enemy fleets. 4. Keep strong and imposing garrison in Spain and Africa. 5. Take Tarentum and Croton. Isolate the stragglers. 6. Take Capua and Rome. Then beat up every enemies that fight you.
