It appears Antiochus made the same mistake at Magnesia that he had made 27 years prior at the battle of Raphia. He pushed the right flank to quickly, got caught up in the chase of a fleeing adversary, which ultimately led to the tattering of the Seleucid line. Those who do not learn from history.....

Great vid, absolutely brilliant. The Seleucids are by far my favourite faction to play as in Rome 2. I've always been fascinated by the Seleucid dynasty, especially since they are not as well known and written about as the other Successor states. So much so that I specialised in Seleucid history at University. Great to see a video featuring one of there greatest Monarchs. Please keep up the great work.

I'm interested in them too. Can you tell how the huge Seleucid Empire actually fell? I know they had intern conflicts but still such a huge empire that was actually a kingdom if I'm not mistaken...
@VikingRik
@VikingRik Жыл бұрын
@@Kvs-vf9nt It was a Kingdom you are right, It was really a combination of Alexander's and Achaemenid Kinship. The Empire fell due to a combination of civil wars fought by claimants to the throne, satraps revolting against the kings and external enemies attacking. The Bactrian satrap Diodotos declared independence a created and empire/kingdom of his own called The Greco Bactrian Empire. The Parni tribes took over Parthia and fought to expand into the rest of Iran whilst Rome after defeating Antiochus II took all Seleucid territory west of the tarsus mnts and gave it to their allies such as Rhodes and Pergamon who had originally been under Seleucid control. After Magnesia the Seleucids had constant interference from Rome backing satraps who wanted independence and backing rival claimants to the throne. Rome apparently even sent agents to Syria to hamstring all the Seleucid Indian war elephants. And that's it really, over time Parthia, Armenia and Rome took territory until all that was left was Syria which was finally conquered by Pompey. Hope this helps. 😀

@@stefanvella9807 People often compare units of armies. For me it is much more about strategy, preparation and commanding, not about which unit is better. In this battle, the Romans won because Scipio was a great military leader. If Alexander had to face the Romans maybe he wouldn't have used Phalanx and more flexible units instead. We'll never know🙂

@@user-cg2tw8pw7j sorry sir, maybe you still do not understand about ancient religion, but we can see about nowadays Jews, many of them, maybe still have old ways of religion in minds. Past ago, before Alexander the great, get some enlightenment (hope from the CREATOR) many great men, kings, nobles, and even some prophets.... This one, including Alexander the great teacher himself, Aristoteles. They believe that true religion, is their own ( and it seems, each nation/tribes have their own variety of religion) and exclusively only for them. So, Jews/prophet Moses religion is only for Israelites. Osiris and Horus, only for Egyptian. Even Aristoteles have some letter with warning to Alexander, reminds him "why you share and taught them, they're not us, they're not Hellenistic people". Same as, maybe Sumeria will never believe their gods and goddess will care Africans, but Africans have similar in minds. So, that's it, Persian will never even imagining Ahuramazda for Greek people, same as Odin, as for Nordic warrior, is only for them, and they will shocked if some city in Greek call their highest deity with Odin. I think, from what I learned, all happening around the time of Alexander the great and in East around the time of Siddhartha Gautama, then people thinking about, if this the truth, why we not share and teach to others.

I have a theory as to why the Romans did the triplex formation: It wasn't so that they could rotate between each other when the time called for it, it was so that they would have a zigzaged frontline which would break up professional enemy lines, where the enemy would charge and their Frontlines would immediately be surrounded. The Greeks would've fallen victim to this mostly because they fought with static phalanx formations. And the triarii would be the back up to cover up any holes the enemy would've made and poked them back. The equities would either attempt to face their cavalry counterparts or be another plugger when there wasn't enough triarii. Another theory is that they operated somewhat like the squares that was used in Waterloo, where the enemy would charge into the gaps only to find themselves in a deadly maze of swords, shields, and pilas. The triarii would be the last line to cut down enemies who were bold enough to find their way out of the maze. Equities would protect the flanks if the enemy decided to wrap around the outskirts of the formation, or charge into the maze like formation and trample the enemies. The only times where they would rotate is when they face similar units where the Hastati would make a long line with no gaps and the Princeps would swap them out whenever needed.
@tptallen4498
@tptallen4498 Жыл бұрын
My second theory would make sense as to why Hannibal was so successful against the Romans, he outright refused to fall for the formation trick and instead attempted to wrap around the Romans.
@AdituLaudisMMXXI
@AdituLaudisMMXXI Жыл бұрын
I just don't know about the second theory. If they formed squares, they would be quite static. When, in fact, the majority of time, their tactic was to push the enemy with heavy force. The only time that didn't work was when fighting phalanx head on, so individual legionaire units were flexible enough to make a decision and wrap around them when their flanks were secure
@tptallen4498
@tptallen4498 Жыл бұрын
@@AdituLaudisMMXXI while I agree that they wouldn't be effective as static squares, let's consider that they aren't static and aren't really "squares" and that they still operated individually but still in unison with the other cohorts to guide them into the maze of death. Now that I think about it the first theory would work well with anyone, and the second one might really work well against unorganized barbaric tribes

@@tptallen4498 Hannibal is so overrated , yes he won three battles in Italy but he lost the war, he never captured Rome and that’s the only battles he’d won but everyone seems to make him out to be some great strategist , actually when he was confronted by the same general shippione he got destroyed on home soil, at the end he lost everything so where is his greatness? He couldn’t hold the territory couldn’t subdue the romans, he got lucky but then it ran out.

Well done and intriguing to watch. An observation, though, if you don't mind, is the groups were too far apart when spears were thrown. Arrows could fly that far maybe, but not spears. I'd also like letters - 'R' for Romans & 'S' for Seleucid - superimoposed over the groups of combatants as much as possible so the viewer can better keep up with who is moving where. Hard to do, obviously, when in close combat.

А, может всегда вступали, когда этого требовала ситуация. Как человек ездивший верхом, на лошади, как с седлом, так и без, я не сказал бы что сражаться без седел и стремян невозможно. The selucids lost cause of their war elephant and chariots and they didn't deploy a skirmishes screen infront of their phalanx like phyruss , elephants would have been better on the flanks rear skirmishing then later on charing to frighten roman horses

I agree. I think the Seleucids actually could have won this battle with different tactics and formation

This was a poor show of combined arms phalanax only works with combined arms chariots are good against cav but don't commit for the initial charge if you skirmishes

in the Illyrian Peninsula there was only the great Illyrian war, and there were 2 of them - history must tell the truth, not the Greek fairy tales that there is no other war, there were no Greek/Slavic peoples until the Byzantine era in the 7th century AD.
