You need to list your social media as a job on your resume. Even though you were sick, you did “work.” Growing a social media audience is a job in itself.

@@MandySmith-wf8sb how would anyone know she has “government handouts” from a resume? Employers in the US are not made aware of any financial assistance anyone may be receiving.

As an employer I absolutely agree. You don’t have a gap in your resume at all. This channel is a job and it’s something to be very proud of. Being self employed and being able to find funding and sponsors is impressive. Make sure you emphasise this. You are exactly the type of person I look for when reading resumes. You are actually far more qualified than most people your age. Your resume is impressive so go for it! The only person holding you back is yourself.

As a former recruiting director, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to finding employment. First off, you need to list social media as your employment. It's actually quite inspiring! Secondly, you went through a battle that many of us have never gone through. It shows grit, determination, and strength. There won't be one person/recruiter who will look at you as though you just took time off. You graduated from college and went on a journey harder than any of us will ever know. You came out on the other side still smiling and still grateful. That is who the recruiters will see. Someone with immeasurable strength. If you write a cover letter, you can touch on that journey very quickly and then move on to why you would be the person for the position they are filling. You've got this!

hi! what do employers/recruiters feel about people who have "taken time off" due to chronic mental illness? i have bipolar 2, have struggled with addiction and an eating disorder. i feel that this is even harder to sell then a physical illness rather then a behavioral one. i have been working at a low paying job with minimal responsibilities and a lot of flexibility that can work whether or not i am more or less unwell. i contemplate going back to school to get certification to use my experiences in stabilizing myself and my life after so many years of problems. i have a bachelor's degree. i contemplate taking a leap and working full time. but i feel i cannot trust myself or my body to be able to follow through everyday. it feels like whatever i do, or whoever may give me a shot, there will be disappointment and failure because, even though i do what i am supposed to do to take care of my condition, there are things that happen that i cannot foresee. thoughts?
@MegaCj65
@MegaCj65 10 ай бұрын
@@lizzzzzzzz Unfortunately, I don't think society is at a place where mental health is at the forefront of our lives. It is still stigmatized. My advice to you is to have that conversation first, with your medical team. If you are at a place where you can't find stability, there could be something that needs some tweaking. It sounds to me like your plate is full. Give yourself some grace. Have a conversation with your doctors first. They will know before anyone else if that next step with your employment is the right one. I feel for you and understand your struggle as I have some of those same struggles myself. Keep your chin up and keep working towards making each day better than the last. You can do it!

You were incredibly lucky I’m sure you know that. Not everyone is able to continue working during their cancer treatments. My cousin was 24 when diagnosed with breast cancer & she couldn’t even walk some days & she passed away at 27. Everyone wants to “feel normal” whether you have cancer or not. I have chronic pain & I haven’t been able to work for 8 years now. I find that people are so judgemental when people can’t work whether they are sick with cancer or not. I find that most of those people have never experienced anything significant with respect to being sick. I have a gf that has never had anything worse than the common cold & she has the most negative outlook on life which I can’t comprehend! 5:57

@@susansuarez343 I completely understand about people judging others who don’t look sick. My son has a severe case of ulcerative colitis. He went from 220 lbs down to 115 lbs in a matter of weeks. We overheard a nurse in the ER tell a doctor that my son was just looking for pain meds, that he really wasn’t sick & was just a druggie. It broke my heart for him.

Going through cancer is a HUGE deal and it makes an impact on us not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. Other people see us as the same person, but inside we feel different and know we are not the same as before. You are being honest with yourself and that is very wise. Definitely something will work out as you seek what is best for you.

Have you considered making a video explaining your cancer journey and how you are processing your way back to life before cancer for prospective employers? It might make looking for work a bit less daunting. But aside from that, you are not in a race, you need time to recuperate. So don’t feel like you need to rush into full time work. Your body has been through so much. Much love from Canada 🇨🇦

My dad passed away last year and my mum struggles with disability caused by the chemo treatment she had. If anything happened to my mum, I wouldn't know what to do. I couldn't just go to any job as I don't now have the updated experience and training, so I get what you mean 💖

You ARE talking to a friend Romee! Love listening to you. You are a smart beautiful woman with so very much potential. The fact that you know what you need to do for yourself, both physically and mentally, tells me that you have a great handle on where you are right now. I have lived with fibromyalgia for the last 13 years. It forced me out of a fabulous job a had for over 20 years. I had to stop all the things that used to love. Running, soccer, even socializing became so difficult. I became more reclusive as I hate making plans and then having to cancel. I had friends that I lost because of it but the friends I now have understand my limitations and never make me feel bad if I cannot commit. but it is a mental game I play daily. I now work in a greenhouse with family and it brings me confidence and gets me out of the house when I can go. You will find your path! Love from 🇨🇦

I got a job last summer after being unable to work for 2 years. I am so nervous about getting sick again that I won’t spend my signing bonus because I have to pay it back if I need to leave the job within a year. I’m scared I will get too sick to work and get fired/quit. Everyone keeps saying “you’ll be fine,” but it doesn’t always feel that way. I worry that if I explain to my co-workers why I need more rest breaks in the day that they will pity me or see me differently. I want them to just recognize me for my work alone. However, if I don’t tell them, I worry they will notice me taking too much rest and think I’m lazy (not knowing I make it up later in the day at home.) I know this isn’t advice. I honestly don’t know the right answer. However, you certainly aren’t alone in this. Navigating the workforce is hard even when you don’t have health issues. It becomes much more complicated when you can’t trust your body.

I am still at the no energy, major brain fog, still have pain all over, neuropathy in my hands, feet, and my legs are very week and are in pain 24/7 to where I have to use a cane. I have tried not to use one but mostly failed and was falling with a lot of bruising. I also have neck/back issues. In 3 months I will get surgery on both arms. I can’t remember the name of the surgery. I also am very depressed and my anxiety is very high. I had breast cancer in March of 2020. So I went into the hospital without anyone and was alone after my double mastectomy with expanders surgery. It was awful. Then I Needed a D&C, Then I got a hysterectomy and they left the ovaries, then put in implants, then they had to remove the ovaries, then take out the implants and replace them with a different or shape because they went left on my left side and they went right on my right side. Then a lithotripsy because I have medullary sponge disease and get kidney stones whenever they want to invade me. My mental health went down the tube. Before all of this I worked at a pharmacy and had 20 years in, I ran in races and I was training for a marathon that May of 2020 but of course it was canceled due to covid. I do have to take a cancer medication tablet everyday and that wrecked havoc on me also. I have to take it till 2030. I am supposed be down to seeing the oncologist once a year but my bloodwork shows my cancer points going up. So the last two visits have been 6 months. I go back again soon. Sometimes if the liver or kidney is not behaving it can mess with the CA-15 bloodwork. As of this year, I am on SSDI. Never in my life did I think I would be like this. I wish you could find a part time job that is close to home. Work maybe 6 hours at a time. You maybe probably exhausted at first. I think a full time job maybe too much but I could be wrong. I wish you the best. ❤

I think you are the kind of woman that likes a challenge. I remember when I was younger I got myself into a bit of a rut after a few major surgeries. I was also one who liked to challenge myself, better was always better than settling, so I remember pushing myself to not fall into a rut I couldn’t get out of. I think, I THINK at the time my rut would have led into depression…so I quickly just pushed forward without concerning myself with the what if’s. If something happened, it happened and I delt with it then. I will be honest here, I’ve fallen behind a bit in watching your videos. When I woke up this morning I thought about you and that I needed to check in..I always start where I left off. I did see a video you posted, your last video you did and it says something about cancer, maybe an update or something..I almost clicked on it but wanted to do as always, start where I left off. I just hope all is well! You are someone who people just find it easy to connect with, to like and want to stop all bad things in its tracks. I wish sometimes I had this super power that could forcefully make all bad things not reach below the surface of our skin…then just wipe it away. I will move along here, one video away from the last posted..I hope all is well and I’m reading too much into it, and if not…let’s kick it to the curb!

I completely feel you. I moved to Europe 8.5 years ago and chose to put my coaching business on hold with our moves (every 2 years). The last 6 years in Sweden consisted of 1 year getting us situated in our home, 1 year IVF & pregnancy, birth of son along with cancer diagnosis the same day, then 2 years of treatments as it became stage 4a plus 2 years of recovering from the treatments as well as juggling a young one. My energy is still no where near where it used to be and I still have quite a bit of recovery to go before being ready to go back to work full time. My hope is after this summer. Going back into coaching feels like too much time on my own and I can’t go back into accounting as it’s not the same here as in the states so I’m trying to stay curious about what I am drawn to do next since I’m still not fluent in svenska.

Work the job you’re working now part time to build up your stamina. Join some post cancer groups, even if on line, to meet new people. Your career will come. If you have the $$’s then take it slowly. I think counseling is a good idea. I’ve read of others in the cancer world feel the same way-they weren’t quite sure where they belonged after being cleared and not in the hospital all the time. What about teaching English?

First thing to do is write down All the positive and exceptional things about yourself. Read it every morning and night. Then write what kind if job you Know you would thrive in, think of that Often. Make a business resume that is short and sweet, include a note about being a proud cancer survivor and the time frame. No need to elaborate too much on that, except to say you launched a successful KZbin channel, travelled and became very well rounded and healthy. Include your interests, your strengths, your work ethic etc. You are such a lovely positive honest person who has a lot of integrity and resourcefulness…plus just know you are also Charming and Beautiful. When you go for an interview, articulate what you initially wrote down about yourself. No need to dwell on your insecurities, that part is privy Only to those who love you. I have NO DOUBT that you will THRIVE & Be APPRECIATED in any work you do. As far as juggling getting heathy and going to work, you Can organize your time… Go to the gym 1-2x/ week before or after work. Make sure you connect and have FUN with your loved ones often… drinks, dinners, walks, chats. Sending you GOOD THOUGHTS, you are WONDERFUL! ❤from Montreal

You didn't do nothing during that cancer journey, you've continued digital marketing even under struggling period of time which means that, for a company, whatever is happening, you will be relevant and strong. That's what you have to show into your resume and application letter

It’s ok to mention you have a gap due to health reasons and then say you’re well now and ready to get going. I say this as someone who hires people and has interviewed hundreds people. Honesty is good and most of us can tell when someone is BSing us. Attitude matters more than anything when you’re hiring someone. You wouldn’t believe how many people have such appalling, entitled attitudes. You’re likeable and down to earth, just be honest about your experience and talk about how you were enterprising and took the initiative by doing the social media in the interim. List that as your interim work experience. When I was in my early 20s I had serious health problems and almost lost my life. Like you I worked for myself and explained the gap later. See if you can find a role that is covering maternity leave or something so you can try things out and build up.

I do know when I started my new job as a heathcare technician they did ask me about the gap in my employment as I lived in the Netherlands for 4 years with my ex before returning to the UK as I struggled to learn the language and my ex could support us both at the time I wasn't working, they were very understanding when I explained. But definitely honesty is best policy and like others have commented put your social media down for sure :)

Do you do a cover letter with your resume to explain your gaps that may help. It appears that a lot of jobs are online so maybe seek out those. Don’t rush just enjoy your free time right now and don’t stress about. Heal all mind, body and soul! Good luck in the job hunting.

Your body and your mind have been through so much. Why don't you do a year of freelance before going back to a full time job. You WERE employed as a content creator the entire time you were sick! I think that speaks to your work ethic and determination that you were being creative and working while taking chemo. I don't even know you and it's very easy to see you would be a great addition to any company!

Yeah I can relate to this, I have been feeling bad for 4years now and just at the start of this year I got diagnosed with a rest of my life disease (I was 24). Had to quit a test job because of medication that lowers my immune system, and have to maybe change the medication to something stronger next year. I don't know how to make sure that the 4 year work gap is understod by employers that I really did not feel good enough to work, sure I did some volunteer work and I was a "call and I'll be there" worker for some local jobs, but that just does'nt seem to be enough. I have no idea what I even want to do next and I have so much anxiety about starting anything new, I know what I don't want to do but that does not help much. I hope you find what you want and I don't think you have to worry about your gap years I mean you had cancer and beating that is a full time job atleast mentally, no one blames you for wanting to travel and have a life before going back to normal ✌

You're way too young and have been through way too much to feel this guilt. You're way too hard on yourself. If you worked for me, I would have hired you based on your strength alone. Be honest and upfront with people because those are the real people you want to give your energy to. Don't put your energy where it shouldn't be. It will work out, trust the process.

Hey Romee! I love your videos and will try to keep them playing in the background for a bit or extra help. I have a chronic illness and struggle with energy levels and also balancing my energy output too! I found finding a network of people in a similar situation (any chronic illness/recovery) very helpful. I think everyone feels the way you do sometimes! Your outlook and dedication to your studies was incredible and you should believe in yourself! You can and definitely will find your way with this, it just may take a little time. I work in a cancer Diagnostics lab btw - I think that's how I came across your video! I heard a fantastic quote once: the only person who knows what you can do is you, but the only person holding you back is also you. Sorry I don't know who it was by! Take care and give yourself time and space! It will happen.

Want full time is een no no voor mij. Ik denk dat jij wel een hele boel kan. Want je bent volgens mij een hele sociale meid. Die heel wat in haar mars heeft. Ik zou eens informeren bij het UWV, misschien kunnen ze je helpen met bepaalde dingen.
