Thanks for the video. Very useful and helpful. My only comment is I've been to Italy four times now over the last seven years. And I stay for 3weeks each time. I always enjoy wherever I go. But the problem I find is my Italian not very good even though I really do try ...and when I try ..locals always make a big deal that I'm pronouncing something wrong. Even my ciao I get told its wrong. So...now I've just stopped because I get so embarrassed. Now I just apologize upfront and speak minor English now when I'm out. But the funny thing is when someone there speaks English...I am Canadian by the way....it's far from perfect pronunciation but I can can fully obviously understand them even with their accent, but I never say that they have pronounced a word differently or a bit incorrectly because there is an local accent in top of it so it's bound to sound different. It's not just Italy..most non English language places are like this. All I'm saying is that if someone is trying....cut them some slack for not pronouncing something in the perfect way that you do having been born and raised into the language.

Rome Inside It is 17 day trip so we are stopping many places. Lake Como, Venice, Verona, Florence, Assisi, Rome, and Sorrento. Rome is June 12th until the 16th. I’m traveling with a friend and neither of us have travelled intercontinentally before. This should be interesting. Mostly nervous about language barriers but I’m trying to get down some basic phrases beforehand. I just found out I have some Italian ancestry though I don’t know who or specifically from where so it makes this trip more special.

Hi! I am Italian but from the North east. I think there may be some incorrect parts and I would like to discuss them with other Italian people but in English, so other people can understand the situation. 1) When do you say "buongiorno"? I say "buongiorno" until there is light outside. When the sun sets, I say "buona sera". I heard "buon pomeriggio" only in some tv shows, I don't use it, and of course"buona notte" implies the idea of sleeping. 2) Is "salve" formal? Professor Bombi (she teaches linguics in my university) says that it is not formal, nevertheless I heard many young people use it as if it was formal. Maybe Italian is changing? 3) How do kisses work? I use 3 kind of kisses: the "romantic kiss" the "chaste kiss" and the "social kiss". The first is the one I have for my lover, the second for my sister, for my mother, for my best friend etc. and the last one is complicated. Men shake hands and are cool with it, women are expected to kiss even at the first meeting. I don't feel very comfortable and I usually give a manly, strong handshake while smiling like an angel. Is it the same for you? Thanks
@RomeInside6 жыл бұрын
Hey Carmen! Thank you so much for this comment! Here are my thoughts to your questions: 1) I say "buongiorno" till after lunchtime, i.e. if I enter a small shop at 11, I will say "buongiorno" to the owner/shop assistant. I find myself often saying "salve" though, cause I feel like is less work for my brain haha 2) I think I read a book from professor Bombi in university. I respect her thought but if you look at the way salve is used you can say it's pretty formal. For example, I would use it with my boyfriend's relatives in a form of respect, but I would NEVER use it with my friends (they would all laugh if I did 😂). But languages definitely go under a continous evolution and changing process so maybe Bombi intends that "salve" used not to be professional... Now I'm curious to know how my grandma/great-grandma used it! 3) That's interesting! Maybe it's different in that part of Italy but here women are not expected to kiss on the first meeting :) And that's good cause I personally wouldn't feel comfortable in doing so and I'd probably do what you do haha
@Whippets5 жыл бұрын
@@RomeInside I've been going to Italy for the last 55+ years and the use of formal versus informal has changed rather dramatically. I'm not suggesting that the formal way of speaking has disappeared, but it's definitely used less frequently.

Hi Bella Lisa. Its me Vincenzio again.. I recently discovered another great Italian musician... i believe he is a pop like rock music artist? His name is ? Pino Danielle im willing to say ? Since you live there in Bellissimo Italy ? You have already heard of him ? But i have a question or favor to ask ? Who would you suggest i listen to. You see first im a moble dj here in New Mexico and yes Im Italian, American. As i mentioned in a previous comment to you ? I have discovered the High Five quintet who ? I believe are in Bari Italy the drummer of the quintet? Lorenzo Tucci is kind of the leader ? Of the group. I also discovered Mario Biondi and a song i like very much by him titled? This is what you are. But i would love hear of some other great musicians that you also could suggest. I may even add them to my play list on my various dj events. Anyway ?, Grazie and i hope to hear from you soon with some great suggestions. Buona notte. Ciao. 😉

In a store you shouldn't say "ciao" but "buonasera/buongiorno" or even "salve". In a pub (italian pub) it's different cause it's usually a more informal environment and if you're young and the barista is young too, you could say "ciao" :)

@RomeInside6 жыл бұрын

It's quite commonly done across and Mediterranean European countries and middle east, It's even gone as far as South America, I know they for sure do it in Brazil but not sure about what other south American countries do. So not quite exclusive to Italy, but maybe it's possible that the romans were the ones who help to spread it... very likely the greeting existed before, but I could be wrong... just guess ;)
