Just wanted to say thank you so much for this video - it really helped! The question this morning for R&J was 'Juliet's difficulties' with an extract from Act 2, Scene 5 (waiting for Nurse to return; Lord Capulet keeps her inside the house showing male dominance). I initially wasn't 100% sure how to approach it, but after watching your video, I focussed on Patriarchy and Fate the whole way through, starting with the prologue, and felt that I had some very strong points towards the end! Thanks so much! Really was a grade changer - your predictions were bang on, although it might not have seemed obvious.

If I were to construct a 3 part thesis for a Romeo and Juliet question, would I use each of these parts as an “umbrella” for every explanation? So if one of my points was about Tybalt as aggressive, would I use several quotes and explanations but link them to this same idea?

@CheesyBagel-kr7mp
@CheesyBagel-kr7mp 11 күн бұрын
@@AksaHidosh i know it's after the exam already (and it wasn't even on fate, fricking aqa out there to screw everyone over), but i love how it shows Romeo's despearation and how he's just tired of everything. Like, I am CONSTANTLY bashing his character and calling him a wet lettuce (mainly due to his first scenes and the audio version we had to listen to in class made him the whiniest brat in existence). But this quote, _this quote_ almost saves his character for me. Best Romeo line by far. It just shows how burdened he is by misfortune and fate, as well as his desperation to escape it. He's trying to break free from fate's grasp, but ironically he actually succumbs to it. He plays right into fate's hands. He is Fortune's fool. In trying to escape his fate he fulfils it, and I think there's something quite poetic and twistedly beautiful in that. (actual stuff i would've pointed out had i used it in the exam: * shake - sense of breaking free, despearation. somewhat a violent action, foreshadowing his somewhat violent end. * yoke of inauspicious stars - metaphor - he's burdened by fate (also implies it's his duty to fulfil the prophecy of the Prologue) * world-wearied - alliteration rolls of the tongue and slows the pace. he's seen too much, he's matured, he's grown up. he's gotten married, he's watched his best friend die for him, he killed a man, got banished, and manipulated/coerced a poor apothecary to give him poison. and yet he's still just a boy, and he's tired. Tired of the world and all the misfortune it throws at him * flesh - somewhat dehumanises himself. shows how little he cares for himself or life anymore after all that's happened. he no longer has a life or soul, he's just a walking corpse. dead meat. (could also be interpreted as referring to Romeo not really being a person but a device, a puppet of Fate used to punish the feuding families) * overall - dramatic irony as Romeo tries to escape his fate and take control, but the audience knows from the Prologue that this was meant to happen all along. increases the tragedy. And that's why I am SOOOO ANNOYED that the question was on Juliet. Again. I mean I did alright with it, but not as good as I could've if I could have used this quote. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk :)

@stardewcrosser8536
@stardewcrosser8536 17 күн бұрын
How I like to think of it is that you are examining a quote in a different way, normally using the same word/phrase in both interpretations but suggesting different things. For example, when Capulet said 'Ere we think her ripe to be a bride' 1. The verb 'ripe' suggests that Juliet is like a piece of fruit, objectifying her. Also, the pronoun 'we' (in relation to Capulet and Paris, who are both male characters) suggests that Juliet has no say. This suggests that Capulet *conforms to how fathers were supposed to be in Elizabethan society* :they owned their daughters and gave them to others to marry in order to raise their social status and, due to the patriarchal society, decided when and who their daughters would marry, and the woman would have no say. 2. However, it could also be argued that *Capulet subverts typical expectations of men*, again through the use of the verb 'ripe'. This suggests that Juliet is not 'ready' for marriage, a view that many fathers wouldn't have had at the time, as many daughters were married young. Even Paris points this out, saying 'Younger than she are happy mothers made'. This suggests that *Capulet goes against what would've been expected of fathers at the time*; to marry their daughters young, and presents him as more caring of her feelings. Basically, it's good to look at a word/phrase and suggest multiple things of what it could mean; as long as it makes sense in the context of the book, and (if it's more far-fetched) you have evidence to back it up, then you should be good to go! Sorry if this was too long, I didn't really know how to explain it other than with an example.

How is fate and violence the same? you cant link them completely

this is what salles said on his substack: Shakespeare shows that the lovers cannot escape their fate. This is because society is the tragic hero of the play. Society’s hamartia is that it is patriarchal. It is dominated by violence because men are raised to solve problems through violence.

Ikr, so annoying. What difficulties did you write about? And what do you think of the difficulties I wrote about, cos I'm not sure. I did difficulty in growing up, experiencing love for the first time, and the patriachal society
