There's a reason NO ONE does this song since Sarah Vaughan left us. Who would risk comparison to THAT instrument, so richly endowed by God? She sang it often her last decade or so, each finely different from all the others, all magnificent. The one etched in my soul was at Carnegie Hall during the Kool Jazz Festival 1982, when she graced us with SEVEN ENCORES, ending with a "Send In The Clowns" that had people WEEPING OPENLY; I feel no shame in saying I was among them. Sing, Sarah Vaughan. Sing with the angels.

Amazing Sarah Vaughn. These women worked tirelessly crisscrossing the globe doing what they did best under the circumstances that oppressed Black Americans during those turbulent times in America .Yet they they never wavered or faltered. Because they knew they were creating something magical. Sarah Vaughan has recorded 48 studio albums, ten live albums, 35 compilation albums, two extended plays, five box sets and eight album appearances. Happy Birthday to Miss. Sassy Sarah vaughn

In 1981, when she performed this for the BBC, Sarah was 57 years old. Her voice, so seasoned and rich. Never better. Incredible. The way she can hold a note, her phrasings, her outrageous range, hitting higher notes than at any time in her career, as far as I’m concerned. I love that she went acapella just when the words said “finding myself, this late in my career.” Just brilliant and very touching. We miss you, Sarah. We really do.

Somewhere around 1984-1986, I had the immense pleasure to usher at the Monterey Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center, and saw the divine Sarah perform live- and when she closed her appearance with this song, particularly the a Capella lilt of "in myyyyyyyyyyy CAREEEER!!!" it brought cheers and swells from the house like you've never heard before. There was an indescribable thrill to hear and see her live. And at the song's conclusion of "maybe next year," her soulful runs positively had me in tears. Then I had to direct her offstage to a corridor leading to the dressing room, and she positively skipped down the walk, giggling a little "thank you, baby," while toweling herself down. I was floating!!

I had the opposite experience: for all the many fine and wonderful vocalists I've admired in my life, the first time I heard Vaughan it literally stopped me in my tracks. There's only one other vocalist since then that I've had the same experience with. Both of whom continue to STUN me. The funny part to me about Vaughan is I just really don't care for cool jazz. At all. 😆 But her voice! My god. 😍

That title is firmly in the hands of one Aretha Franklin. I love Sarah but Aretha is simply without rival, her overall sound was celestial in every sense, her tone, her range, her instinctive use of her instrument, her technical skills, her elasticity, she emoted like no other and sang from the soul of humanity itself. Just ask Sarah, she said it herself, Aretha was a rival-less artist.

Favorite female singer that's for sure. I've never seen my Father cry in my whole life. But the closest I ever saw him come to crying is when I showed him this clip of Sarah singing his favorite song. I'm absolutely sure I saw a little tear in the corner of his eye. I miss you Daddy. Everyday. You were my best friend and my Superman. I pray to God that someday I will be reunited with you. I love you so much Daddy and I hope you're safe in Heaven.👼💕☝💖🙏

@@douggresham2821 Thank you so much. And bless you too my friend. I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Father. I can sympathize and empathize with you completely. I as well, live everyday in terrible grief. The pain is still so ever present and has not gone away even after 6 years. And I know I will continue to feel that emptiness and heartache for many years to come. As you had mentioned that 8 years after your Father has passed, the grief is still strong. So, I know it will not end. As you had mentioned that your Father introduced the song "Send In The Clowns" to you at a young age, I feel most fortunate that I was introduced to *Sarah Vaughan* by my Father when I was a young pre-teen. I've never seen him *so* moved in all of his life as when he watched 'Sass' sing "Send In The Clowns". Every time I see or hear Sarah Vaughan I always think of my beautiful Father. And I know you'll think of your Father too, when you hear "Send In The Clowns" being sung by Ms. Vaughan as well. And probably anybody *else* singing the song for that matter! 😊 Thank you ever so much for taking the time to leave a comment for me. You're so very kind. I wish you comfort, healing, strength, courage and peace, dear friend.🙏💖👼🎤🎶🎹🎼☝😺🍀

Listening to this song sung by the late great Sarah Vaughn doesn't fail to move me to tears. This is one of the few select songs wherein one can somewhat fathom- or gain an iota of understanding of- the wondrous beauty of Ms. Sarah Vaughan's voice. Quoting the words of renowned jazz critic Gary Giddins: ''No matter how closely we dissect the particulars of her talent ... we must inevitably end up contemplating in silent awe the most phenomenal of her attributes, the one she was handed at birth, the voice that happens once in a lifetime, perhaps once in several lifetimes." ''Her voice had wings: luscious and tensile, disciplined and nuanced, it was as thick as cognac, yet soared off the beaten path like an instrumental solo ... that her voice was a four-octave muscle of infinite flexibility made her disarming shtick all the more ironic.''

This video was my first time hearing Sarah Vaughan a couple years ago, after seeing her mentioned on countless videos I said well let me check her out. I did and she is now my favorite, there could not be a more pure instrument.

I heard her sing this with the Count Basie orchestra in Fort Lauderdale in 1981. Remember it like it was yesterday, I was completely blown away.

In a class by herself. There is no one even close. All of today's pretenders who call themselves singers should listen to this and stay humbled

Saw a clown sing this on, The Simpson's last night lol. It was like a musical episode where they sang everything they said . I was like, what's this song. I liked the little part the clown sang. Then I came here and WOW! Sarah Vaughn sang this with her heart and soul. Great is all I can say. Hats off to Sarah Vaughn!

the only time i can listen to this song with enjoyment is when Sarah sings it - ironic that it was written to accommodate Glynis Johns' meager singing abilities - but when turned over to someone who really can sing - it has even greater depth and power

Sassy , The Divine Sarah or just Sarah, she was the first great post World War 2 Jazz, Pop artist. Her voice was a combination of Gold , Silver , Pearl ,and Diamonds , in my opinion she was the very best of her era.
