Its sad Romney/Ryan couldn't win their own states, that tell it all.
@hotwax93764 жыл бұрын
Not really. Romney was from Massachusetts, which has been solidly D in presidential elections since 1928, save for the Eisenhower and Reagan landslides. And Ryan was from Wisconsin, which, though a swing state, has usually gone blue at the last minute, much like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown. (That said, Trump broke through there four years later and George W. Bush likely would've beaten Gore there were it not for the early call of Florida depressing Republican turnout in the final hour or so of voting.) Janesville, Paul Ryan's hometown, has historically been home to an auto plant and thus is mostly Democrat-leaning.

@hotwax93764 жыл бұрын
Not a surprise. Janesville (Ryan's hometown) and Rock County (the county where Janesville is located) is home of a GM factory and has historically been a Democratic-leaning area. And Massachusetts has been solidly D in presidential elections since Al Smith's loss to Hoover in 1928 (besides the Eisenhower and Reagan landslides).

I'm from WI as well. I was telling people (non wisconsin) the exact same thing. A lot of conservatives thought that since Walker won reelection and picking Paul Ryan as a VP pick that WI would be in play. What people fail to understand is WI is a liberal leaning state. Its history has always been a progressive one. Now there are enough republicans here to swing it but I don't see a republican vying to be president winning the state anytime soon.

John King was the star of the night. I did not have to guess what was going to happen. He took the country county by county in how the votes where coming in. He even threw a little nugget in there tells the country that a little county name Vigo, Indiana has pick the winner of the Presidential election since 1819. The county of Vigo Indiana has only failed to elected the since 1819 only twice. Future campaigns should give this county a consideration of a launching point after Iowa.
@hotwax93764 жыл бұрын
Logic really didn't say that that the Latino vote would give Nevada to Obama. While it's true Nevada has a large Latino population, they also have a large Mormon population that would've favored Romney. Of course, Obama still got the state, but John King was wrong to assume it was a given, much like he was wrong to call Oakland County, Michigan, a bastion of Reagan Democrats during the 2016 primaries. (He was probably thinking of next-door Macomb County.)

@David-fm6go2 ай бұрын
1. Romney's ground game and turn out operation were a disaster. The lack of enthusiasm and lack of ground game, left him at a huge disadvantage in critical states. 2. Romney had the wrong issue focus in the general election and should have emphasized trade more and also the job competition angle of immigration (he already incurred all the costs of the hardline immigration stance, but his general election retreating from the issue also denied him any of the benefits). 3. Demographically, Romney was boxed out of the electoral college: 1. He struggled with working class voters because of his background and campaign platform (Closed off WI, MI, PA, and OH) 2. The extremism of Republican Senate candidates damaged the more socially moderate Romney with suburban voters, especially women (damaged him everywhere). 3. His performance with Latino voters hindered his efforts in the states of Colorado and Florida. Romney repaired a lot of the damage that McCain-Palin did in the suburbs in 2008 and in some places 2012 was the high water mark before Trump made the GOP radioactive with college educated suburban votes. However, he either needed to go even further beyond with the wealthy suburban votes (see number 2 above) tapping into even more socially moderate and liberal voters there, or get back to Bush levels at least with working class swing voters. The rest of the party made the former impossible, and the combination of his background and his donors made the latter impossible. In terms of the Latino vote, contrary to establishment narrative, that was not decisive in Romney's loss. It was decisive in Florida and a little bit in CO and NV, but Romney would have still lost the electoral college without Ohio, Virginia and at least one more state even if he got to Bush levels with Latino voters (and Romney's problems with working class whites would have also hindered him with Latino voters absent the immigration issue). Florida was close enough that a better ground game in the central part of the state and the I4 corridor, probably flips it. Trump won Florida by running up the numbers in the exurbs and further out suburbs around Tampa, St. Pete, and Orlando, and doing better than Romney in the area around Daytona Beach. There is a reason why the GOP took the rust belt strategy, because it is the path of least resistance that angers the primary electorate the least. It pisses off the donors to go protectionist on trade, but most GOP primary voters don't care. Going socially moderate to juice up the suburban margins was never going to be allowed by the Christian Right and without the immigration hardline, Romney never would have been the nominee. As bad as Romney did, Santorum and Gingrich would have been annihilated in the suburbs outside the South. There is a reason why the other mainstream former GOP Governor of a Northern state to run in 2012, also took a hardline stance on immigration. That was a Tim Pawlenty. Obama only regarded three GOP candidates as potential threats: Romney, Pawlenty, and Huntsmen. The rest were all joke tier or far too socially conservative to be competitive outside the bible belt.
