The fact that Fez lied about saving it from that night makes this make so much MORE sense than just being weirdly intimate (also it explains why ANYONE would save something from an event so unremarkable at the time: they wouldn't). It was a misjudged attempt at emotional manipulation, at a time when Fez was beginning to feel insecure about his position in their partnership as Ron had finally started to display genuine dissatisfaction. I think it largely backfired because Fez has no actual empathy and therefore no real understanding of how this would actually make someone feel.

Then he found them and forgot where they came from and thought he must have saved them from that night. He then made up this whole thing in his head. He then tried to use them to manipulate Ron, but ended up pushing him away.

In Ron's defense, a big part of that was Fez's fault. Things changed for them when they left WNEW and went to JFK. Fez hated it there, grew resentful of Ron, and the downward spiral of the crying Fez began. Ron didn't want to go to XM but did it for Fez. Their relationship slowly deteriorated and never recovered from that point. Ron himself said he only stayed with Fez because of the "Brand". Just like O&A, R&F knew the product together would be more successful than split. Now, Ron and Anthony are miserable and scraping by on their respective programs, while Fez and Opie are dead (Fez Literally, Opie metaphorically).

He’s a old guy and a few years before RF ended he said “at this point I’ve been in radio longer than I will be in radio” meaning he couldn’t handle radio with Fez. They loved each other (platonic) but were extremely resentful of each other. Fez more than Ron. He also said MANY times “doing this show is free money. You come in, bullshit, get a paycheck. This is what I’ve done my whole life. Just hanging out.” Sounds like he’s gotta great life.

People didn’t want to do the show because they had to face a 50 year old man who cried constantly or went on predictable bitching rants if he wasn’t completely silent. He turned mean as a snake and didn’t want to do his job, but wanted to be paid and given credit. He mistreated and screamed at the staff enough to get formal complaints. Like all people with Fez’s mental issues he projected all of his hatred’s onto literally EVERYONE else and refused to take a joke. When he screamed and insulted people some of them his subordinates he said they all were “bullying him”. When someone called him out he said it was a trap meant to give him heart attacks and kill him. And its such a tragedy because like you said. He was the best! A truly fascinating study of how mental illness can warp and grind people down. If it can happen to someone like Fez and turn him into a husk it could happen to almost any of us. Terrifying…
