4:31 Apparently no one notified Ron Howard that Disney had released a bunch of PG-rated films prior to “Splash”: *”The Black Hole” (the first Disney film to be rated PG), “Midnight Madness”, “The Watcher in the Woods”, “Popeye”, “The Devil and Max Devlin”, “Dragonslayer”, “Condorman”, “Night Crossing”, “Tron”, “Tex”, “Trenchcoat”, “Something Wicked This Way Comes”, and “Never Cry Wolf”.* Unfortunately, most of those films either underperformed or bombed at the box office due to the dissonance of the PG rating and the DISNEY name attached to it, which one associates with being family-friendly and G-RATED. As a result, Ron Miller (who was the CEO of the Walt Disney Company at the time) decided to create a second alternative label called “Touchstone Films” (later renamed “Touchstone Pictures”), so the studio could get away with releasing films that weren’t rated G. “Touchstone” was a great way for Disney to remain commercially relevant without sullying their wholesome, family-friendly brand. To quote Ron Miller, *”The strength of the Disney association with fine family entertainment can have a pronounced adverse effect on our ability to broaden our marketing and production horizons. I believe that some very fine Disney films in recent years, with more adult themes, have faltered at the box office because of it. For example, films like ‘Night Crossing,’ ‘Tex’ and ‘Tron’.
