Phillip Black Who WOULDN'T want to spend their free time watching Becker and Coase debate the merits of utility theory?

If the concept of utility should be thrown out, as Coase prefers, then do we also throw away the concept of social welfare? And if so, then what is economics even for or about? It's clear to me that people take action in order to TRY to increase their own sense of well-being, and economics is studying exactly that behavior.

It is probably fair to characterize Becker as a libertarian, but Coase is no libertarian. It'd be more correct to call Coase a non-ideologue with no affinity to any particular theory except the facts.
