Ronald Dykstra

Ron Dykstra was born in 1948 in Holland, Michigan. Following graduation from high school in Grandville, Michigan, Dykstra received his draft notice in 1968 and reported in 1969. After completing his basic training at Fort Knox in Kentucky and his AIT at Fort Polk in Louisiana, Dykstra deployed to Vietnam. Originally, Dykstra fought in Vietnam as a member of the 1st Infantry Division. However, when the 1st Infantry returned to the United States as part of President Nixon's downsizing, Dykstra still had time let on his tour, so he transferred to the 23rd (Americal) Division, where he served for the remainder of his tour.

I don`t know--I love his interviews,but every once in awhile there`s one that will either exaggerate or outright lie about his tour in Southeast Asia....I don`t think B-52s were called in by the infantry for airstrikes--I was always told that the B-52s struck on their own time,to surprise the NVA with no warning,and what is Mr. Dykstra talking about when he stated that his platoon was setting booby traps??That`s the first time I`ve EVER heard that and I`ve heard thousands of these interviews....I don`t think this guy was there at all....I`m sorry,but it sounds like he`s getting his story out of a movie.....

There may be some embellishment here, but there are a lot of stray details here that a faker would not know, and are not in any movies I've seen. B-52 strikes were planned, and American units on the ground were warned of incoming ones, since they needed to be a certain distance away from them. A platoon leader or company commander couldn't summon one out of the blue, but there likely would have been some form of communication between them, if likely not between pilot and junior officer. He may have assumed more cause and effect than was there. We did, however, set booby traps, and multiple interviewees mention them, notably men from units of the 101st Airborne in the Ripcord campaign. They used the term "mechanical ambush," but they were basically booby traps. My own view is that most of the story is valid. If he was faking it, he was really good at it. Most fake Vietnam vets aren't very good at it, and are pretty easy to spot.
