14:01 Both schemas and instantiated expressions reside in configurations of semantic and phonological structures that are connected by relations of symbolization first, but also composition and categorization; so, this covers both syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships.

1:08:08 "The current clause gives you a current window of attention, and through a discourse, that window of attention, given by the current clause, moves through the descriptive target; I call the moving window metaphor. It's complementary to the compositional metaphor we use in cases where there is something like composition and constituency, but it's equally fundamental to linguistic organization".

25:28 The crucial notions of dependency are "head" and "dependent"; and those have never been absent from these kinds of cognitive grammar representations; the notion head is equivalent to the notion of profile determinant.

01:05:29 Linguistic meanings emerge from and are supported by a conceptual substrate, which includes the descriptive target in a discourse (what we are currently talking about, and what we have talked about so far in the discourse. How a current expression relates to that is an intrinsic aspect of its meaning"

33:29 Cognitive Grammar has always been Dependency Grammar

19:25 While constituency is readily handled in this framework; it's neither fundamental nor essential nor sufficient and there are lots of problems if you try to describe grammar exclusively in terms of a constituency hierarchy.

My guess is that the Descriptive Target overlaps with the more traditional term "propositional content" (the DT being larger than the PC), but I don't know; it's just a guess.

I think there is a lot wrong with this. The comment section isn’t a great place to review a talk. But essentially, a lot of strawman arguments against constituency, a lot of ignorance of other frameworks, and a lot of weird alternatives that don’t really work any better than what they are supposed to improve upon. Then again, all linguists just work on the little things they like, so I don’t really mind... Who knows, maybe this is somehow brilliant.

Though I havent watched the entire talk I'd like to ask you why do you think this portrays ignorance of other frameworks. Langacker was a big generativist before the 80s. And lastly, are these comments in regards to cognitive grammar in particular or to construction grammar in general?

@@darklordofkickingass Dude, that Zimmermann is just trolling. He did not watch the video or was not able to understand the video (it is probably too complex for his head). Go to minute 10:04 and you will see that Langacker clearly recognizes constituency as part of grammar. But this troll is here just to troll. So there won't be anything you can do to hold an intelligent conversation with him. In fact, the full purpose of this lecture is to show how "assemblies" offer a way to include both Constituency AND Dependency in one single visual (metaphoric) representation. And more than that, not only are Constituents and Heads-Dependents included in "assemblies," but also Chains and Windows (just read the title of this video...). As for the putative "ignorance of other frameworks...," dude, was that even the purpose of this lecture? I hope you can notice what a big troll that zimmermann is... Don't lose your time with guys like this. If you are really interested in this subject, I can help you a bit with it if you wish.

@@sergiosanchezpadilla6941 thanks for the information! Actually I've been reading Langacker's introduction to CG, but I'm not far enough to talk about constituency in the way described in this title at least. I hope to learn some more cause thus far this is my favorite, or most compelling, theory.

@@darklordofkickingass Great. I am also reading Introduction to CG (2008). You can notice in the rest of the comments of this video that I have been transcribing the aspects of this lecture that I find most interesting; so, please drop a line or two in any of my "transcriptions" to ask for anything you feel you would like to have a conversation. I suspect this zimmerman guy will erase his comment when he realizes that he typed thoughtlessly... Langacker makes very explicit many times throughout this lecture that his "assemblies" DO recognize and give an account of the nature of Constituency AND Dependency (as well as Chains and Windows). So, it is beyond any doubt that Langacker is NOT arguing against constituency at all; what he is arguing is that "assemblies" incorporate more than just constituency (i.e., also Dependency, Chains and Windows); sorry if I keep repeating the same idea over and over, but that is the whole point of this lecture. I have watched this lecture 3 times already, and I will watch it again tomorrow. So, I am really into this. As for the problem you are having to understand "constituency" in the classical sense (which is actually very useful), there are many videos out there that can help you (I had the same issue at the beginning). I can recommend the following videos (but of course these are just randomly chosen; you could very well find better explanations somewhere else, but these should be helpful as a starter): kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6i3lqBsiaeVhqs kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaHGn6qgpceartk kzbin.info/www/bejne/a37Qm36Qdsueq7s kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnK3en57Z8hroac
