Those Madrid teams massively underachieved. It was like as if, the players were doing magic and working hard but for nothing. I think the ever changing managers and tactics might have played a big role, but most importantly the lack of defensive midfielder. As Zidane said himself about Makelele and Beckham, "why put another gold plate onto the Bentley when you take away the whole engine". That was why Barca and Valencia beat them to titles, they worked their ass off and everyone played a role.

These goals dont really do justice to how insane he was when playing at his very best before he came to Real Madrid. He was a completely different player before that horrific knee injury at Inter Milan. To this day, I have never seen a faster more extreme dribbler with a football. It terms of pure ability with a football, he was as good as Messi, just as profilic with goal numbers ultimately. It was crazy how he could dribble past 4-5 players like nothing. I think only Messi or Maradona has made me say "wow" to the same level that R9 did.

Nazario Delima Ronaldo is the master of what we call today as "The Modern Day Forward". Guy could play left wing , right wing or central strike if duty calls and do that with perfection with delivery. Certainly not the phenomenon. These goals are pretty ordinary compared to R9. Ronaldo in his prime like, dodging 2-3 players with ankle breaking footwork in the midfield region, beat 2 defenders with sheer speed, tread mark step-over to make the keeper go opposite direction and then a gentle push in the empty net. UCL is unlucky not to experience the prime R9.

Because Barcelona and PSV didnt qualify when Ronaldo was playing for them. He played in 6 UCL matches for Inter before suffering two career ending knee injuries. He came back and played for Real Madrid but was probably 50% of his elite self. A lot of people will say he was a failure when it comes to the UCL. I would say it is due to circumstances. For example, Thomas Muller has scored 50+ goals in this competition. Thats more than Roberto Baggio, Ronaldinho, and Ronaldo combined. But is Muller a better player than either the 3 aforementioned just because he got more UCL goals?
