I wish our politicians would sit around a table and have magnificent conversations about chandeliers today. We could learn a lot from watching these conversations

The President was wearing a robe and pajamas because that very month he'd undergone surgery for colon cancer; he had only been released from hospital on July 20.

I know I wasn't born during this period, but I am really enjoying these old videos. I'm also trying to recognize a few faces. I see President Reagan, Vice President Bush, Senator Bob Dole, and is that Tip O' Neil??

On the left side of the table is congressman Bob Michel the Republican leader, Congressman Jim Wright the Democratic leader, and then Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina (joking about Robert E. Lee room) and Senator Bob Dole. On the other side of speaker O’Neill, Senator Byrd (talking about the chandelier Senator Mansfield gave to Jacqueline Kennedy which he tried to get back from President Carter) ,and then Don Regan. Vice President Bush is at the other end of the table opposite the president.

Fascinating around 7:30 listening to some of the conversations in the Treaty Room when they’re asking about the Grant room and then Senator Strom Thurmond jokingly ask where is the Robert E. Lee room? Interesting story Senator Byrd starts talking about the Senate Chandelier that Senator Mansfield gave Jacqueline Kennedy which he try to get back from President Carter, and then speaker Tip O’Neill who of course knows the White House history telling a good story about Paul Revere’s contributions. Great stuff!
