Remarkable. A civil, intelligent debate between two articulate and well-informed people who had the best interests of their country at heart. We definitely don't see that anymore. The things discussed at a debate or in a candidate's platform have tenuous links to how people vote. This was one intimate venue and not the entire electorate, after all. I think the cultural shift is real, but I don't think it's because people were better educated or better informed in 1980. I think it's the incentives of the media, and the development of strategy. In terms of personal reaction, seeing Bush calmly discuss how he was worried that his opponent would lower taxes by too much made me think it's a no-brainer that he lost.

@offscreen65784 жыл бұрын
@@Rickswars I believe it's more complicated than that. I wouldn't say it's liberal media specifically but most of the media in general. With the rise of clickbait content in the age of internet oversaturation, news articles seemed less intent on reporting the truth and more intent on getting clicks. There's also the problem of absolute tribalism propagated by similar media outlets, social media outrage, and of course, the fact that Trump is currently the only representative of the Republican party despite being the most polarizing figure of this generation. This causes Republicans who don't even necessarily agree with him to feel as though they must support him, since the alternative is not supporting Republicans at all.

What snapped my attention was in the beginning when GW Bush said "I want to give the Governor a chance to respond". You would NEVER see that kind of civil behavior now in a debate. They would be busy yelling over each other....oh and NOT giving any actual facts about their plans...just attacking each other :|.

Bush's forecast was 100% accurate, by the way. Reagan's plan did in fact explode the deficit and set a grim precedent of cutting taxes and failing to fund the government.

It has been years since I saw this on TV. I must say that it is rather interesting. Reagan and Bush, to my knowledge were never friends but they are taking the party way here and being nice to one another. Reagan must have found some reason later on to bring Bush in, which I wish he had never done. The Bush dynasty way back to Bushe's father, then later we will get "W" which brought our country down to the depths more than any Democrat ever dreamed of (except for several whacky ones that are now in the 2016-2020's years.) Anyway, I'll leave the Bush Dynasty dark things go by. I wish debates would be more civil and less hostility as they have been for last 30 years or so...this struggle for money and power in a nation as ours has raised its ugly head and sadly will stay until as all authoritarian countries do, we are headed to hell on earth. The story of the human heart that is all about self.

I think it’s fair to distinguish and separate Bush Sr from W. W was way more hawkish and neoconservative than his father.

Ronald Reagan and George Bush ran the country for 8 years together George Bush and Dan Quayle one ran the country for four years after that and then you have George Bush Junior ran the country for 8 years before Barack Obama took office afraid to tell me right here Ronald Reagan and George Bush and both their wives have passed me all four of them rest in peace

Very good debate. Reagan set up Bush to win the election, but his policies set up Bush for failure. The "no new taxes" thing didn't help either

He was the last president to serve his country. He is a respectable and good man who loved this country. I see how you would say Rino. That’s Bull he was always a very moderate Republican. He was a good man. The secret service said they were so classy and knew everyone’s name that worked there.

@@rickydunn3921where to start: “ Read my lips no new taxes”. One year later: new taxes. He called for a “ new world order “ in his inaugural speech. Those are not actions of a true Republican. He accomplished nothing, merely serving as Reagan’s third term. He admitted as much in his autobiography. RINO ALL THE WAY.
