Gen. Robert Barrow was my commanding officer during my tour of duty Vietnam 67 68 9th Marine Regiment 3rd Marine Div. I am thankful that I & my fellow Marines had such a great Marine leader. Semper fi & well done Gen Barrow. Rip

Wow. They phased out the Choker Whites for Marines a long time ago. Too bad, too; those are very fine looking uniforms.

My father, my mother and my brother were Marines, I and because of a damn doctor I could not be a Marine and it was my greatest wish, even so I shout, Thank's my beloved Corps, SEMPER FI and OOORRRAHHHH.

In a world of dismissed, demasculinated, lost young men withouit role models or purposes, young men in crisis, a 18 year old mouthy disrespectful boy came home a polite, poised marine. His father said "The Marine corps did in 6 months what I could not do in 18 years."

Such brave, heroic men and US Marines and a true leader and Commander-in-Chief here... our Corps and our country are now void of such greatness... smh! G_d bless you Gen Barrow, Gen Kelley, and Pres Reagan! Semper Fi! (1985-91, USMC)

Say what you want about Reagan, he was dignified, he had grace and conveyed what it meant to be President.

Funny story..somewhat unrelated: I was at OCS in Quantico summer of 87’ when we were all online for an inspection and the DI’s were questioning our “knowledge “ and kept asking us who the Commandant of the Marine Corps was and we all kept saying “PX Kelly.” Well, unbeknownst to us all there was a change in command and Gen Al Gray was made Commandant while we were in the news blackout of OCS. Anyway, we all failed inspection. No way to know about current events in week 3.

Only a few months later, on October 23, 1983, 241 US service personnel, including 220 Marines and 21 other service personnel were killed by a truck bomb at the Marine compound in Beirut, Lebanon. Newly appointed Marine Commandant P.X. Kelley had to attend Congressional committee hearings to discuss the reported lack of proper protection and security afforded the Marine compound.

Very true. In fact, Marines weren’t allowed to have magazines locked and loaded while assigned as sentries.

Gen. PX Kelly was my commandant during the invasion of Grenada 83 then Beirut, Lebanon 83-84. In just that week of Oct. 23rd, 1983, he would be dealing with the death of 241 service man and 220 were US Marines who died in the barracks in Beirut and at the same time had to deal with Marines invading in Grenada. Gen. Grey who is still alive told us at Camp Lejune in 2013 that he visits with Gen. Kelly who is suffering from memory loss. Eventually, Gen. Kelly would die from Alzheimer. RIP, Sir!

Btw, as a young new butter bars, I and all my other new fellow shave tails had to purchase a King’s ransom worth of uniforms and accessories. Of course, we officers are expected to put out. Damn near made me broke. Anyway, the real dagger to the ticker was the fact that soon after my accession to First Lieutenant I believe the ice cream suits were decommissioned. Wonderful! I think it was $600 bucks back in 88’

True. But the men who fight those wars aren't in on the game. We fight for duty, honor and country because as fictitious as it sounds we take an oath - and believe in it! I thank the Corps everyday for saving the life of a wayward young man who was destined for disaster. Too bad subsequent generations allowed that apparatus to be unwound.
