Just reading a lot of the comments and it was noted that one of the big concerns of the Fortuner is the fuel tank capacity. There is a 45 liter additional tank that can be fitted in the tire well which should give you roughly the same range as the Prado. According to the fitment place it does not compromise clearance. In South Africa we have been driving Fortuners' since 2006 and it has to be one of the most popular vehicles here. I might be slightly prejudice as I have owned one or two and will be buying my third soon. Really good video by the way.

Ronny, I'm writing this from the US, and own a 4Runner, FJ and Lexus GX460. I'd say that the current 5th gen 4Runner is bigger than the current Hilux based Fortuner. Its 2 inches longer, 2.8" wider and has 9.6 inches clearance to 8.6 in the Fortuner. All three, the FJ (which you have in Oz), the 4Runner and GX460 are Prado based, the wheel bases being 105.9, 109.8 and 109.8 inches respectively. The 4Runner has the Fortuner style tailgate while the FJ and GX have the Prado style tailgate, although with different swings. The GX has the Fortuner style 3rd row seats while the 4Runner has the Prado style, and the FJ doesn't have any. The ride in the 4Runner with TRD shocks and KDSS is closer to a Landcruiser 300 series than not. The Curb weights for the FJ/T4R/GX are 4330, 4750, 5350 (approx.) each. Only the GX has a V8, all Gasoline/petrol powered only. The Fortuner and Prado weigh almost 4700 and 5260 lbs in Australia! The diesel engines in the Fortuner and Prado add at least 100~150 lbs to their Curb weights. The Lexus is a Lux mobile because of all the extra body panels reducing clearance for off-roading.

For touring in Australia the extra 70L of fuel available in the Prado (with door mounted spare) would have to win it. The comfort on rougher roads is a nice bonus to, as is the range of aftermarket accessories. Now that 150L long range tank you've got for the Hilux makes things interesting.

We reached, watched reviews and took for test drive after test drive with both of the. The price was a big thing but what was the deal breaker for us that No one covers in any reviews is the anchor points for baby / booster seats is that the middle one in the Fortuner is in the roof above the back door. We have 3 seats in at all time and if had a extra person come along for the day the strap from the middle seat is right next to the person in the 3rds head. So for that we went the PRADO.

Taking out the jump seats freed up a huge amount of space in the back, they were nice to have when needed, but needed so infrequently that I took them out. Also no jump seats means much better visibility. Here in 🇿🇦 I'd say there are more aftermarket options for the Fortuner than Prado. Would I love to have a Prado as my daily, absolutely. Would I pay the premium for it over the Fortuner, probably not - if I was going that far I'd probably go 200 for not a lot more.....

Thanks for the review Ronny. I purchased a new Prado GX last month and here are my reasons. I had a '17 Ranger 4x4 and basically got tired of the hard ride. I didn't consider Hilux or Fortuna as they are both know to not ride/handle as well as a Ranger, but even the Ranger gets tiring over distance. The Ranger significantly out handles the Prado (in the dry only) with beautifully accurate and balanced EPAS compared to the Prado's old school hydraulic steering, and with a stiff chassis and suspension it handled surprisingly well (and I came out of a hot hatch to the Ranger). In the wet however I would put this to you....the Prado is in an entirely different league to the Fortuna. Even the Ranger is deadly on a wet road. No amount of electronics can tame a RWD with a stiff light rear end, and it's almost as bad when you put weight in it as it just means there is more weight sitting high to be thrown out around a corner. Fortuna might be a bit better in this respect with rear softer coils, but test I saw last year emulating the Scandinavian 'elk test' saw Toyota lagging significantly behind the pack in the VSC capability. RWD just cannot compete with the AWD of the Prado in my opinion, where I have found you can virtually drive the Prado the same wet or dry. Even though it is a boat in handling terms, the Prado feels safe and composed wet or dry with a magic-carpet ride, wet weather grip and rock solid resale (that I do not think you get with a Fortuna to the same degree), and that isn't even considering the (I believe) sturdier construction of the Prado (hence more weight).
@garrygraham79014 жыл бұрын
I had a 2015 Everest Ambiente and it was superb to drive, including AWD. But it was a lemon, Adblue/terrain system/ecu failures on a regular basis with no fix ever successful. It was a heart-breaker. So I got a Fortuner for affordability and reliability and have not been disappointed. I only ever see Rangers on the back of tilt trays, never toyotas. When I eventually upgrade, it will probably be a Prado...

I'm looking at a prado, y62 or 200. dreaming with the 200 really because the prices are stupid now. Anyway, I've got a 17 hilux on 33 muddies and it's shithouse in the wet. Like you said with the ranga, pretty dangerous. For this reason I'm looking at a fulltime 4x4/awd wagon. For comparison our other car is an X3 and i floor it in the wet with no dramas at all. TC doesn't even turn on.

Yes only on the GX, but compare the kerb weight of the GX with the GXL VX etc. and there is up to a huge 215kg difference. AND much more cargo room in the rear without the seats. Yes, the GX has no rear locker you say, but is a rear locker worth the extra $6 grand and the extra weight you get? No I say and I bought the GX. I can always fit a rear locker for much less than the 6grand I saved over a GXL. The GX is the pick I say.

I live out west in n.s.w and I drive in less then desirerable roads every day, the fortuner hasn't shook anything loose as of yet and has been very mechanically sound. I haven't had a problem with fuel ranges because in the real world as was said I would just carry more fuel if I needed and the benefit of that is I can drop weight instantly if I needed. I do agree however with the stiff ride but this can be fixed with some nice shocks and let's face it if you're touring you're probably going to change shocks anyhow. Great honest review, for the extra you would pay for a base model prado you could spend on mods anyhow.

We went Prado as there interior space between passengers was bigger, and being 6’6 I couldn’t sit in the back seat as my head hit the roof nor did I have leg room in the back compared to the Prado. I know I won’t be in there often but when I am I want to be comfortable

I would opt for the Fortuner because of the extra space and lower cost. I really don’t need the luxury the Prada offers. As far as looks go, as long as it’s not down right butt ugly, I really don’t care. I’m more function over form. As far as history goes, I lean toward a long history. My reasoning is, the longer a model vehicle has been around the longer there is to have worked out all the bugs and more time to be refined. Plus I love my 4Runner and if the Fortuner is more like the 4Runner that’s what I’m going with.

Thanks Ronny, I was up at Toyota today looking at them both. I too have picked the Fortuna GXL for a touring semi offroader with the 4wd capability. I needed a decent car for the steep slippery boat ramps of the NT, I don’t think I’ll be disappointed

Fortuner all day. Why? The barn door sucks. It's nice to have a roof over your head when you're working in the back in the rain. He touched on the trailer problem, it's the same situation in a tight parking spot. Also the amount of space the mandatory third row takes. That's what, 4 inches of usable floor height? Ridiculous. At least you can take the seats out of the fortuner.

Good review Ronny. I stuck my son in the Fortuner he’s 6’4 and hit his legs and head, put him in the prado more room in both leg and head room. I now own a vex prado. Oh he is 14 so a bit more growing to do. Greta review

I had a Prado 120 for 10 years and now I own a 2019 Hilux. both are great but the Prado is definitely the more luxury feeling vehicle in comparison to the Fortuner. or as Ronny would put it "Redefined" 😂😂

Good review Ronny - the Fortuner would be a no-brainer for me with it’s great value for money nimble, economical Hilux underpinnings as an off-road and daily driver - the deal breaker for me with the Prado is weight, fuel economy, length and that woeful barn door that also appears on the Pajero and RAV4 - it’s too long for safe parallel parking especially when you need to open the bloody rear door while trying to avoid hitting the car behind - I’ve previously owned many Subaru wagons where I could happily have a lunch stop under the shelter of the rear door during sun and rain - I now drive a 2010 Hilux diesel auto with newly installed aluminium canopy which again provides excellent shelter on both sides - John in SA

I’m sure the fortuner is a great car, but I think the range you can get from the twin fuel tanks on the Prado and the comfort level make it the better tourer.

Thank you for compassion to back my opinion. I got the Fortuner as it came out in Australia. I did the compasison of these two, looking at the drive, cost and look with the Fortuner winning bar rear seats folding (Prado) and yucky brown leather seating (fortuner crusade).

Nice Video! Here in Colombia we get Fortuner (SW4), Prado and 4Runner, and I have to say, the 4Runner is almost the same vehicle as the Prado... They share almost everything underneath (there are many things you can swap between them) and the smoothest of the three is the 4Runner, almost to an uncomfortable level because it doesn’t corner that well. The Prado is not exactly agile, but certainly a bit better, and the one that feels better at cornering is the Fortuner, but also feels less stable than the other two and the ride is stiffer! The Prado has received more updates than the 4Runner, the Prado V6 received an air to oil ATF cooler with 6 speed transmission (funny that the diesel doesn’t have one), the 4Runner is almost the same since 2010, just a facelift during 2014, so it feels older while driving, also very “american” with its wallowy ride. Until 2020 we still had the Prado with the 1KD and now 2021 models got the 1GD with higher output. Fortuners have the 1GD since the actual generation! They are all great SUVs! We do perceive a little bit of quality improvement for the japanese Prado and 4Runner over the SW4, which is made in Argentina!

Even Toyota knows it’s Prado, hence the reason they put the land cruiser badge on it.
