And Ronnie spoke straight - in the auld public houses. A fool that interrupted the Dubliners like that, would find out he had been signed up for, and had suddenly won, a very brief flying lesson. Sans plane, wings or parachute.

Spoke to him by phone from here in the States a day or so before he died. He was in hospital. Told him I enjoyed being his guest for dinner in Ireland at his home in Ireland along with his wife Diedre back in 1997. Great guy, great spirit, real man.

Imagine Ronnie doing "Mama Tried" with that voice of gravel and brogue. Johnny Cash OWNS Folsom Prison Blues. Ronnie could do a fair shake at it, but can't quite replace Johny C. But I would have simply loved to hear Dubliners do Mama Tried with Ronnie using that marvelous Irish rock tumbler of a voice to make it theirs.

When tobacco was sold in rolls (or 'rouls' in Dublin), the best and least damaged tobacco came from the middle or 'heart' of the roll. So the heart of the rowl is the best of the best, the cream of the crop etc
@Fcutdlady4 жыл бұрын
Thats intresting. Im live in Dublin and have heard this song a lot. I always thought it was the heart if the row was Dicey Reilly, meaning she was always the centre of attention. Thanks for the explination .

The Dubliners are a great group. No one can deny that. It is too bad that Johnny Cash and Ronny Drew never teamed up for an album. Their voices are dynamic. It is sad how the years have gone by so quickly and the great artists pass away. May they rest in peace. I also like the Seekers. Another great group. Ronny Drew was the a legend. I often wonder if the Dubliners have ever been in Canada for a show. I have inquired but no one has ever replied. If anyone has any knowledge of The Dubliners ever having been in Canada I would love to hear about it.

the words of the song: Oh poor old Dicey Reilly, she has taken to the sup And poor old Dicey Reilly, she will never give it up It's off each morning to the pop that she goes in for another little drop But the heart of the rowl is Dicey Reilly She will walk along Fitzgibbon Street with an independent air And then its down by Summerhill, and as the people stare She'll say, "It's nearly half passed one Time I went in for another little one But the heart of the rowl is Dicey Reilly Now at two, pubs close and out she goes as happy as a lark She'll find a bench to sleep it off at St. Patrick's Park She'll wake at five feeling in the pink And say, "Tis time for another drink But the heart of the rowl is Dicey Reilly Now she'll travel far to a dockside bar to have another round And after one or two or three she doesn't feel quite so sound After four she's a bit unstable After five underneath the table But the heart of the rowl is Dicey Reilly Oh they carry her home at twelve o'clock as they do every night Bring her inside, put her on the bed and then turn out the light Next morning she'll get out of bed And look for a cure for her head But the heart of the rowl is Dicey Reilly

From Irish Music Daily: "The word ‘pop’, which is used in the chorus, is Dublin slang for pawn shop. This suggests Dicey’s daily routine is to visit the pawn shop to get money to buy drink. The ‘heart of the rowl’ refers to the end part of a roll of chewing tobacco. The end of the roll was generally considered to be the best because it had more time to mature."
