@@MetalHeart8787 I still have the Dio tour poster the whole band signed for me after that show, and somewhere I hope I still have the pick Vivian Campbell gave me. A few years later I attended Musician's Institute in Hollywood. Vinny Appice came to the school to hold a drum clinic and when he saw me he actually remembered me from meeting him backstage at that Dio show several years earlier. He said “Man, you're all over the place!” I can see you're an Accept fan as well. I discovered them in my early teens when “Restless and Wild” was released in 82. Years later they finally played Phoenix where I live. I saw them on what must have been the “Objection Overruled” tour. They played at a small club. After the show my friends and I found the tour bus around the side of the venue. We stood outside and loudly chanted each of their names starting with Udo. After we shouted “Udo” for several minutes he came out of the bus, met us and signed our memorabilia. When he went back in the bus we shouted “Wolf” continuously until he came out, met us and signed our stuff and hopped back on the bus. Next it was “Peter” we shouted for, who came out did the same and we concluded shouting “Stephan” who made his appearance to meet and give us autographs. We think they got a huge kick out of us calling them out, each individually. I mean, they were not huge superstars in these parts, but we knew each of them. Got my original German Restless and Wild LP cover with the burning Flying Vs signed. I still treasure it after all these 30 years since that show. I'm actually thrilled I get to share these old memories with someone.

What is so admirable about Mr. Padavona in this particular interview is the fact that he is so reserved, articulate, and concise. I'm no music historian, but from what I've gathered, a lot (not all) of 20th century performers (depending on their attitude and approach) are very much like this when they are the subject of an interview. It's a crying shame and deeply upsetting, in fact, to be part of a generation that no doubt is made up of a lot of talented people, yet when asked to talk about whatever, they reply with un-intelligible dribble. 'Stuff' that quite a lot of the time is not even remotely relevant to what it is they actually do. Anyway, I'll leave you to make your own mind up.

This was Headline News, not CNN. It was their spin off channel that started out as straight news, but around this time started to go for a faster pace production. So it's not like they cut Dio short. This was pretty much every segment. They really tried cramming as much information as possible. That said, they still gave airtime to freaking Dio, probably in the middle of the day. Dio and metal were not big at the time, but they clearly recognized and respected him. No dumb puns or cliche jokes leading into the segment, etc.

It is sadly hilarious that, in an inadvertent example of the typical degree of commitment and diligence exhibited by contemporary American news organizations, that when doing a story featuring Ronnie James Dio, possibly the greatest heavy metal/hard rock singer in history, and an undisputed powerhouse veteran whose natural vocal talents and industry longevity are legend, that the ten to fifteen seconds selected by the CNN producers for broadcast to showcase his new album feature him bopping his head in time to the inttoductory chords without uttering a single syllable. For some reason watching this sent an an odd wave of existential pity through me, pity for the world, and for everyone involved, as though some deep, innate, unnameable principle of human folly was being illustrated, something unseemly and cheap and vaguely shameful, a thing best kept hidden. Something about us on a deep level, an abiding aspect of our nature which not only foreshadows, but in fact warrants, our likely upcoming extinction. Hey, man, CNN, nice job, you idiots. Way to go. REAL inspiring. But we might ask ourselves, CNN, what happens to a crowded, complex world bristling with weapons and darkly powerful barely controlled technologies, a world linked together by extremely vulnerable and fragile supply chains, on that inevitable morning when EVERYONE decides to just phone it in? What happens then? RIP, RJD. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest…

Dio wrote closeted Christian rock. First, the Italian word Dio translates to the word God in English. His real surname is Padavona which is Italian. Next, just think about the songs and lyrics: Killing the Dragon, The Last in Line, We're all born upon the cross, you can release yourself but the only way is down, Holy Diver, Man on the Silver Mountain and so on. Cleverly disguised but definitely Christian.
