Ronnie's fastest maximum was in fact done in 5 minutes 8.25 seconds. Breakdown of timings of frame, trivia & more.
Ronnie is the Roger Federer of snooker, for quality of play and longevity. He can also be compared to Tiger Woods or Lionel Messie as they all mastered the techniques of their discipline outstandingly.
Thanks to Ben Tippett who wrote a very complete article on the subject I was trying to untangle:
deadspin.com/the-greatest-bre...
Note: Upload resolution is 960 x 720 - The format is 3:4. You can double tap to enlarge when viewing on a tablet or any device with that format without loosing any contents.
Version 3 includes new interviews. Copyright music was replaced. Trivia was expanded. Better video editing overall. Typos were corrected :)
00:19 - Full Frame presentation
08:15 - The timing controversy explained
09:50 - Precise timings (vs Tippett's)
10:53 - Reported on the BBC news (short interview)
12:06 - 147 Trivia
13:56 - Steve Davis reviews the fastest 147 ever
17:16 - Stephen Hendry & Steve Davis comments after a rebroadcast
17:56 - Victoria Derbyshire interviews Ronnie about 147s

Technically, the timer should stop when the cue ball stops moving. The break isn't over when the black disappears - only when the white is no longer at risk of going in-off or being fouled before it comes to rest.

Peter Ebdon’s father was a prison officer and with Ronnie Snr serving a Life sentence a match between Ronnie and Ebdon had a special significance in the shovel. I was in HMP Frankland with Ronnie’s dad when he made that 147 and he was buzzing. The authorities really came down heavily on their whole family as his mum was prosecuted for not paying some VAT and got 2 1/2 years (I think) and Ronnie and his sister were only kids at the time with both parents in prison. I can understand why he suffers from depression but nobody wants to go into the whole situation. Ronnie is a legend despite the psychological and emotional hurt he must have felt. I know he made his old man so proud!

Include when the cue ball stops after the last black. That should adds up to 5.20. Logic makes sense - start from when cue ball stopped before first red - end when cue ball stopped after the last black. Using this logic, there will be no airtime between breaks which is where i believe this logic of recording stands and the 5.20 was coming from.

In about 45 - 60 years, some bloke will break a 5 min 9 second 147 and this debate will be all the rage. I believe it will eventually be given to him, but sadly, some bloke will break that record in about 75 - 90 years from now. We usually have about 60 or 80 years between geniuses. Yes, when I timed it, I thought a lot of time went by before he made the break. I questioned the time myself from the start, because the break seemed to be based on the time of the entire frame. But I only questioned it in my head. Were there any left handed shots in that break? I always get lost in the moment when I watch it.

The timer starts here at 1:29 but I don't entirely agree with this. If you think about it carefully a break should start as soon as the player is at the table and ready to take his shot. This means that all the balls should be still after the last players shot and the last player and the referee should be in a position that is not interfering with the next players shot. At this time the player is then studying the table and deliberating over their next shot so they are now technically in play. If it takes a player 2 seconds or 4 minutes to decide how he is going to play his first shot this time should be included in the timer as he is now at the table and "in play". With this in mind the timer in this video should have started at 1:25 instead of 1:29. The timer also must run until the white stops moving after the black has been potted to allow for any potential fouls with the white like in offs, leaving the table or coming in contact with the players body while on the table to use a few examples. So all in all there should be approximately 5 seconds added to this timer so 5 minutes 13 seconds is a more legitimate time. A remarkable achievement by Ronnie nonetheless and even with this it's still 7 seconds faster than the previously recorded time.

@@rickharrison3522 Judging by what other players who witnessed alex on the practice table in his early says have said, I would think a break so fast unextraordinary in comparison to some of his other feats. Higgins was a vicious scoundrel at times, but he rarely lied. There is a film of him in 1971 making a century in 2 minutes and 55 seconds. It is utterly conceivable that a young higgins made a 118 in two minutes and four seconds. @@rickharrison3522 you buffoon. In the early days of snooker there were barely any tournaments per year and most of the games Alex played were exhibitions. When there are tournaments every two seconds like nowadays it is much easier to make lots of centuries. Remember, Alex began playing people like Spencer and Reardon in 68 when the game was virtually dead. I imagine if all the centuries he made in exhibitions and challenge matches were counted the reckoning would be in the several hundreds. Note that Higgins made his first maximum in 65 and had made 11 by 1979, the most of any player every up to that point.

If you watched video timings are explained. Around end of May 2019 Guiness World Record was updated from 5 min. 20 sec. to 5 min. 8 sec. www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/fastest-147-break-in-snooker/ Ronnie's carreer highlights were updated the same way in May 2017 on World Snooker site: www.worldsnooker.com/players/

5:06 Does the guy say he got lucky? that's unfair. Nothing was about luck in all this. He actually tried two times to canon the reds and succeeded the second time, it was deliberate.

Actually if you listen again, after the canon he said he needs to be a bit lucky to get shape on the next red.

One thing good snooker does NOT need is a crappy music track drowning out the commentary.

32 balls in perfect order in 240 seconds, I dont think I will see that in my life. Average shot time of 7.5 seconds is a big asking.

In fact it's 36 pots in 240 seconds. The AST would have to be 6.67 seconds!

I have been watching Ronnie for a long time now and seen this 147 a couple of times and just noticed that there were quite a few young pretty girls at that match and I don't think they were there for the pool. Cheers to the best in my books.
