We was doing the exact same thing in Texas!!! They started playing what's called DRAG MUSIC in the old Cafe's and Juke Joint's in Texas that men and women would SLOW DRAG DANCE TOO. These are ALL FACT'S. My uncles owned a Cafe's down here from the 1950's up until present day. We have one left in a country town on the outskirt of Houston. But even we were listening to dj screw then . I went back to the crib /305 and had to tell all my potnas about the Texas culture. UGK tell me something guud/ chopped & screwed by dj screw had my mind fked up bruh...i fell in luv w Texas bruh thts how I know we wasn't doin no screw. The DJs might have been slowing the music down DJs was very very big in Miami at that time, but never were we slowing the music down as a concept in our music. Matter of fact we like to speed everything up right now to this day and you know I ain't lying those are facts. This is from my experience somebody who got a chance to leave Florida in the early 90s. I’m from Compton I lived in McKinney Texas in 1990-1992 and they was slowing down rap before I came to Texas in 1988-1989 my Cuzzen would play it for me over the phone I heard nemesis slowed down & Dj magic mike an I didn’t like it when I got to Texas my cuzzen would go to Keith Bazar to get the tapes an if they had it any where else I don’t know but I heard music slowed down in Texas , DJ’s slowed it down the first time I heard it but shout out to pico an uncle spliff for giving a platform to discuss the narratives. Screw Music was titled because HE slowed it down and put the chops in it. Slow music was simply this.... Slow pitch based on the Instrument used like the turntable including the portable cassete players like the boombox and the portable headman functioning off batteries that got low and dragged the music but wasnt consistent because of the power fluctuating. I experienced this in 87 in 7th grade on the southside of Htine. Heard my first Screw Zoo, music only no rapping, in summer 93 then freestyles freshman year in spring 94 Texas Southern when everybody went there including the whole 97.9 Boxx radio staff. DJ Steve Nice set up 3 days a week in the student center. TSU band first ones to play June 27th at Rice stadium mid 90's.

Daryl Scott slowed music down but only as slow as the pitch could go on the turntable which wasn't as slow as a actual DJ SCREW cassette. We were doing this in Houston TX dating back to the late 1950's and 60's in Texas. My uncles owned what we call Juke Joint's and Cafe's and we still have a couple left on the outskirt of Houston in country towns. Had certain Disk Jockeys that started DRAGGING THE RECORD so men and women could get they slow grind dance on... We called it DRAGGING or DRAG MUSIC This is real spill... One of our kinfolk named Darrell Scott bought it out to the city" Ima real former street cat, who is deeply rooted throughout the city of Houston and real Historian that's not a rapper and qualified to speak on it.
