Learning to aim a shot when spin is being applied to the cue ball can be tricky.
This video not only covers how to aim these shots, it also includes the best drill I’ve found for getting a player to understand spin induced throw.
Learn how to aim these shots once you’ve mastered this exercise.

This is the drill I'm taking with me to the pool hall tomorrow. I like to set my practice regimen in advance. And it's incredible you have zero issues making the shot. Your only concern is where the cue ball ends up. It's almost depressing to know there's so many variables to take into account. Spin, speed, throw, making the shot. Then if you're lucky enough to make the shot the next concern is where the cue ball ends up. Ughhhh, but I'm determined, so we'll see how it goes. It's all about trial and error, apparently. A missed shot is a lesson in itself.

I find myself quite often saying nobody would do what I’m doing Norman. This is the only way I can learn. By experimenting over and over for several hours, I will all of the sudden find that eureka moment. This has happened several times so now when I tackle a new challenge, I don’t give up until a find it once again 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think on the surface this seems like a good drill for refining your aim and shotmaking and stroke with spin. However, I think what you’re really working on with this drill is cueball speed control. When you’re coming across the next shot line like that every shot you make, it requires fine-tuning your speed. You can get there with different types of spin. High, low, inside, outside spin can get you more or less on that paper depending on the angle you have on the shot, what part of the pocket you pot the ball, the type of stroke you put on it, and if you’re allowed to use any number of rails. In any case, I think it’s a great drill.

Yeah you do not want to go for this position on the next ball. You want to come in on the aiming line not across it. Good exercise if he were to clarify that otherwise this is a poor idea for shape.

Mastering shots when spin is involved is a must John. It took me several several months to finally learn how to match up my speed, stun and spin and where the ghost ball should be per each specific cut shots. What you’ll find is you’ll eventually develop a feel for these shots and they will become easy actually. Dr Dave recently published a video about this. The video covers how pros aim. He explains they actually don’t. He hits the nail on the head when he says they intuitively shoot shots. This comes with many many many hours of shooting shots (one million shots) while applying every imaginable amount of stun, spin, speed and every cut angle. Mastering this game takes Herculean effort John. I keep saying to myself, nobody would do what I’m doing. Since I’m retired and have tons of time, I practice for many hours everyday. Many players don’t have the luxury as life gets in their way. Finding out how to suit your practice sessions with your schedule and by practicing with purpose is key. Having a deep burning desire to succeed also plays a huge part. I hope that helps and please feel free to reach out as I’m always here to assist. Good luck and keep on practicing John. ❤️🎱 PS, here’s Dr Dave’s video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6etZ5KiYtV7l7ssi=qOnu1gZ55xK8sGHb

Also; having a table of your own is a huge help. Learning to master the troubled parts of your game will be the quickest way to rise to that higher level of play. Developing a smooth/straight/repeatable stroke is first on the agenda. Nail down sound fundamentals and a consistent pre-shot routine as well. Keep me posted and once again, give a shout, if you have questions. ❤️🎱

Around 4:15 - 5:00 when you talk about aiming a bit inside the first diamond to throw the ball to the corner, do you mean you're aiming your ball fraction to hit that far away from the pocket? So you aim a center ball hit for that point on the rail, then hitting the CB off-center sends it to the right spot? I Didn't quite follow that. Also, what do you think of Dr. Dave's SAWS (System for Aiming with Sidespin)? With SAWS, you don't change your aim at all. You just line up a center ball shot then use different amounts of front and back-hand english to compensate.
@ronthepoolstudent
@ronthepoolstudent 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Josh, I aim to under-cut then match up my spin and speed so the predicted throw takes the ball into the pocket. Btw, sorry for the slow reply, I’m at the Michigan Open all weekend and I haven’t caught up with everyone yet. Also, let me get back to you on SAWS as I need to refresh my memory as I watch Dr Dave’s video on it again. I need to make sure I explain what it is that I do in comparison to what Dr Dave explains. I’ll try to answer that question on Sunday. Thanks again bud 👍🏻

When you land straightish on that drill. Those are shots I'll use high inside. And a lot of inside. And just go one rail back up. It's a lot easier to control than the stun outside your using. But there are times you have to do that just like sometimes you are forced to use inside also. Just my preference. Seems like my game went up a lot when I started really using inside spin a lot. But I always be say. Most of the common is position moves you need multiple ways to move the cue from spot to spot. Sometimes drills like the one you're doing is an opportunity to be creative and find as many ways to get the cue ball back to the paper as you can imagine
@ronthepoolstudent
@ronthepoolstudent 2 жыл бұрын
So true Jason, this drill makes you try tons of different spin shots to get you back in line. Also like you, my game got way better once I began mastering inside spin. This drill makes it a challenge because we have to go opposite pockets every time. One of my best challenges and it’s really upped my game as a result. Thanks for the advice 👍🏻👍🏻

@@ronthepoolstudent funny some of my favorite shots that come up are those long distance from the pocket thin cuts with high inside. You know those shots most people wouldn't dare shoot inside on but really moves the cue ball to the other by end of the table. I know it kind of gives away my ability when it comes up but it's truly the most fun when you go start moving the cue ball in ways where everyone in the room is like wow how do you do that. Another good drill I still sometimes do is if you're familiar with snooker and where the number balls are spotted. Is the run them in order going one rail to every shot. Than next time 2 rails every shot, then 3 rails every shot and 4 rails every shot. Try to get to 5 rails every shot. When you mess up go back to one rail. It's damn near impossible to get to 5 rails every shot. But the amount of creativity you gain attempting will pay off. I can usually get through 3 rails every shot on 8 foot tables or smaller most of the Time. 9 foot tables with small pockets is way harder though. And going 4 rails really test me. Never got through 5 rails. Attempted it a few times though. Bar box is so much easier for multiple rail position. Infact I use multiple rails as brakes on at boxes
@ronthepoolstudent
@ronthepoolstudent 2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonsanders9054 have no clue how snooker is laid out. It sounds tough though. As for that long inside spin shot, I play it a lot too. I also love to hit rail first when a ball is either frozen or very close to the cushion to the end rail and closer than 1 1/2 diamond from the corner. I’ll spin the cue ball with a boat load of inside then hit rail first thus rebounding into a 90° kick into the corner pocket. I swear I make that shot more than 80% (or more) of the time…even on the nine footers. You get a lot of ooohs and aaahs when you call and make that shot. My favorite!

Ron… I just completed lessons .. turns out I’ve been doing my bank shots wrong .. I’ve been using reverse English , or transferring English on banks … how do you bank ?? Very curios ?? Thank you !
@ronthepoolstudent
@ronthepoolstudent 2 жыл бұрын
There is a time for reverse english, a time for outside and a time for zero english. This being said, when I’m shooting a typical bank shot, I like to add a bit of running top. This helps the object ball develop pure roll to the rail and rebound nicely toward the pocket. When I’m using bottom spin, I’m super careful to strike center low. I don’t mean to boast but I’m a better than average banker. The reason for this is that I practice it a lot. I also like kicking in shots with spin. I have figured out a system that works very well for me when kicking. Hope that helped.
