This is one of my favorite documentaries. Brilliant!

I've watched this video several times, as well as Touching the Void. So much wisdom in this dicumentry that has applicationss to our entire lefe. There are no guarantees in life that --- you give yourself 100 percent to an endeavor with the highest expectations that you will see success... and sometimes it is just not meant to happen. As the expression says: "Tht dog ain't gonná hunt."

I love this documentary. Joe reenacting and narrating, a remarkable and haunting little soundtrack that I found on the composer's website years ago and have never been able to find since. But my favorite bit of trivia about it is that the narrator plays the guy who grows the weed in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Joe's story and Tony's story are so Similar...The pressure of a knot too big to go through a karabiner. Thank god Simon cut him free..

I have watched dozens of mountaineering docs, l can't help imagining the horror and trying it on for size, this one makes your mind recoil from the awfulness. yet i console myself knowing they choose climbing

Re: "dondamon"s comment. It is so depressing to see how ignorant many young people are!! To assume that people have always had instant communication abilities anywhere in the world is just so wrong! Even now, living only 10 miles from Boulder CO, I have no cell reception in my mountain location. All over this country, many backcountry places have no reception. And this is in 2024! Dear child, did you ever hear about the 1980s or 1990s? It seems like all the time on your devices have not helped you in your education about the world. As the former Great Leader would say: "SAD!" And remember, even when Simpson got back to base, they were some days away from a hospital, where insurance coverage was the big issue. Read the book!

Just built a cabin for a friend on top of a small mt in Western Maine. No running water, electricity or cell service, but being born in 1957 I'm not programmed for instant communication where ever I am....Wonder how the younger gen. would like using a out house at the end if a Maine winter ..lol

Man how I wish they had left that rope in place and maybe they didn't have extra ropes and didn't think they'd need to go back across that ice covered. If only they'd have thought we will leave it just in case. May these brave men RIP. Brave souls and dear friends.

Whatever it takes to make a climber, I have almost none of those qualities and am poorer for the want of them.

Joe was a fighter. To think of him climbing tis face on a previously shattered knee and femur in the Andes fall, is staggering.

Understand not everyone can have my attitude , I think it must be just an overwhelming mother instinct But I do not understand the desperateness to do something that is so ncredbly dangerous , not only to you but to all those that will risk their lives after to save you , I understand that if people didn’t map out the world , and take those risks , especially the 1000s that lost their lives across America . But we’ve got drones now , take a picture , go save lives and stick a flag in that . Because the travelling actually looking back didn’t bring about the best side of humanity ( I picture the mountain of buffalo) wth some tiny men standing next to it the virtual extinction they were causing Perhaps someone could explain , how their need to do something I agree is / may feel amazing , overrides the reality of the lives they’re risking ?

He answered me at the end ‘It’s illogical’ But the danger to others , yourself , your family members driving fast ,all a buzz , maybe it’s the under 30 ,I’m invincible , won’t happen to me , lifes is worth living ~ everyone’s ✨ If you are going to risk yr life make it about saving someone else’s , traverse lands and set up water pumps , go to countries and put that human need for exceedimg boundaries to good use not incredibly selfish ones . Human Meat factories in Nigeria , children living in fear , no police , no Hope , no Kindness .

I just don't believe touching the void why didn't simon call for rescue for help straight away or need help himself straight away ? The doctors weren't even worried about them! To go through that ordeal it would have to be an emergency but they weren't bothered and he was fine! Just a writer
@totallytv2671 Жыл бұрын
Who would they have called, and how? They were in the middle of nowhere; they had a friend at base camp, but there was no way to contact him. It was the mid -1980's, so it wasn't common practice to carry phones around; and the mountaineers had enough to carry without those bulky devices on top! They might have had a phone at the base camp, but it was unlikely to have good enough signal to contact anyone, and the nearest city was several hours away even if they could get through to a hospital. Though, I'm not sure how to justify the response from the medical team in Peru; that was just weird!
